Steph - totally rational! We do the same when friends get engaged. We particularly enjoyed the ones that had a DW in Mexico - H's first time there.
Sunshine - I need to get their full itinerary, but I know at some point they're in Zimbabwe. Their trip looks amazing, like 5 star accommodations, but in tents. I'm very jealous, and a little annoyed that H isn't interested. I also love love love to travel, and am lucky to have an H that does as well. Sounds like you and K are equally matched as well!
H and I always joke that it's my job to figure out how we can quit our jobs and just travel, but it's not going so well.
Diablesse - I totally understand the hesitation. No pressure! Just excitement for you.
Shauni, that's hilarious! I fell asleep at my desk several months ago after coming in insanely early. I actually snored myself awake and was a bit embarrassed when my co-workers peeked their heads in to see what I was snorting at. :-)
So excited for Africa. We're doing the falls and safari and island. I'm so excited for seeing the migration of wildebeests and I better frickin' see the big 5 animals! I wish we had more friends who didn't have kids and wanted to come with us, though. I get kinda sad when it's always just us traveling alone. :-(
Steph - Have you been to Tahoe before? We were out there this winter - my first time ever - and I loved it! It's so beautiful!
so i have this fantasy that i am trying to get gerren to agree to: in a year move to taiwan and teach english. save $50K between the two of us (all of our friends do this when they teach over seas). Use 15-20K on a few months of traveling after the year of teaching: belize, australia, new zealand, china, all of europe, northern africa. use remaining $30K to move back home and put a deposit on building dream house. i drool just thinking about this.

We're definitely well matched. I wouldn't be able to stay married otherwise. Ha ha.
We've totally been talking about leaving our jobs and traveling. I wish we could make it work, but I'm not so sure... We have quite a bit of stock options in our company that are potentially worth a bit, but I don't think it's enough to warrant quitting our jobs. Though I've certainly taken to daydreaming about it constantly lately. I keep thinking... Well, if we did volunteer trips and took buses instead of flying everywhere, we could do this, right?!
If only I were independently wealthy... *sigh*
I will totally move with you! For real. We've been fantasizing about the same stuff. Except we're partial to Nepal. :-)
I know
. You guys are great.

I'm seriously considering taking up playing the lottery on a regular basis.

Shauni - that sounds like a great idea! Now is totally the time to do it, before you really settle down.
Sunshine - H's oldest friend and his wife did this last year, and ended up moving to CA when they were done. He's had a really hard time finding work there, but what he does is creative (I believe he's trying to get an agent and sending spec TV scripts out), so that's certainly part of it. I think if your skill set is transferable, it'd totally be doable.
We're both in biotech, so we're a little nervous that we wouldn't both be able to get jobs in the same area when we came back. I keep thinking as long as he can get a job when we get back, I'll just go back to school. :-)
Some days I really take this seriously and put a lot of research into it. Other days I think I'm just kidding myself and it will never happen. We do have a semi-serious list of places to go if we were to take a year off. Start in Central America and South America then finish up in SE Asia.
If we go on these small trips when we have vacation time, it's going to take a lifetime to see them all vs. taking a risk and going for it all in a year. I'm really all for it, but H is a little less free spirited and willing to take the risk. And I guess we should probably be on the same page before taking off. Ha ha.
I feel very lame (not sure if thats the right word I want to use) right now. Would we/I like to travel to different places? Sure.. but I don't really have the desire too. We never talk about doing it. I'm sure we would love to take the summer off and do a baseball staduim tour of the US.
We are perfectly happy going to Key West and hanging out. If we were to win the lottery or become superduper rich one day we will quit out jobs and live there. Hell, we talk about quiting our jobs and moving there and getting new jobs now all the time. I will go on CL and look for places all the time (since FIL lives in the house that we will get one day when they move to a different house in the keys) but renting not even in Key West is butt expensive.
mushE- good call, I didn't think of calling the courthouse, it's 20 minute drive from my house so I wouldn't be going to timbucktoo for it but my boss got a talking while driving on the phone fine reduced so it could be worth a try. Calling wouldn't really cost me anything either.
IUI #1 10/12/11 (Bravelle + HCG + Prometrium & acupuncture) = 10/26 BFP! Beta #1=250, Beta #2= 615. 1st u/s 11/8.
Sunshine - okay, it's settled. Go on the trip and then move to CA! Lots of biotech jobs for your H, and good schools so you can go back and learn something new and fun instead of you also going back to biotech.
H's friends did the round-the-world plane tickets, I think. But they ended up coming home (PA) at least once during the trip (separate tickets) to rest and all that. I think that was their biggest hurdle, just being exhausted from traveling constantly.
But seriously, it is a huge commitment to take off like that, and not one for the faint of heart. I'm stoked for H's friends that they did it, but realistic that it wouldn't work for us (even before the obvious now of the baby coming). My work is far too specialized for me to be able to pick back up, and we're honestly probably not adventurous enough to do it.
That's awesome your boss got her fine reduced! I honestly may not know what I'm talking about here, so I hope for your sake I don't.
