What is your town known for?
Stole this from the book board and it seemed like a good post. What is your town/city known for?
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

Re: What is your town known for?
San Jose... um, I don't know that people outside of the Bay Area are really that aware of SJ. Probably just the Sharks because it's the only hockey team in this area. It also has the reputation for being one of the safest cities in the country (and of course the opposite is true for your city
).
ETA: I live there now but I only have for 1 year. I should probably do the town I lived in for 6 years, San Leandro. It's known for cherries, they have a cherry festival every year. It was extremely white (like 99%) until the last 30 years due to "covenants" that prevented African Americans from settling there, coming from next door city, Oakland. Now it's quite diverse. It's known for its marina that is directly across from the Oakland Airport (you can watch planes come in). It's also known for having a large Ghirardelli chocolate factory. It's known for a grisly murder, as well: http://articles.sfgate.com/2005-12-28/bay-area/17403718_1_stuart-alexander-sausage-king-shooting-deaths

Menlo Park...not known for much. Soccer Moms? Expensive real estate?
Palo Alto (where I give people reference to where Menlo Park is): Stanford
Gilroy (where I grew up): Garlic, baby! My SIL was a garlic princess! And the outlets. But who really cares about the outlets?

Go SF! lol
Well, we live in an unincorporated area that doesn't belong to any actual city. But if we're going by mailing address... my current city is most well know for its crime statistics.
But it's got some really cool history, including WWII stuff, a Ford plant, railroads, Kaiser, etc. It also has a pretty waterfront, and a very active local political scene. I think it's a great, colorful city.
We're the first new town in CA in 35 years (that was 7 years ago now), the "most underwater town in the US", and the home of one of this year's American Idol contestants (she lives on my street

My hometown: Kennedy Assassination, the TV show, the Cowboys (football and other), plastic surgery, and crime.
San Jose: when we told people we were moving out here, EVERYONE sang "Do you know the way to San Jose" to us. It wasn't even funny the first time. And really, they were all like "You're close to SF/the beach/the mountains/napa". And yeah - the software industry.

i think since you can drive to those places in the matter of a few hours, it's considered close. the nearest mountains or beach to dallas are 8 hour drives.

People say that about Fresno too. When I lived in New York, 7.5 hours away from NYC, people thought I must pop over to the city all the time.
In Cali- Google.
In New York- John Andre (Benedict Arnold's confederate) was captured, tried, and hanged.

My friends who mentioned the mountains are all climbers, rather than skiers, so the emphasis was good hiking and climbing - Castle Rock is in Saratoga, which is *great* bouldering and 45 minutes west. But I see what you're saying.
The Walkway over the Hudson. I ran across it this morning as part of this article.

We took some OOT friends there yesterday.
City I was born in: SF. Known for the Quake and its strong gay community
City I grew up in: Santa Cruz: surfing.
Current City: Mountain View: nowadays....Google
Lighthouse State Beach, Santa Cruz.
San Jose - the Sharks, San Jose Giants (ok, doubt anybody "knows" SJ for this, but I thought I'd add it), Winchester Mystery House
I think it's funny that SJ is bigger in population than SF, but hardly anybody seems to know that!
Best known for the Butter and Egg Day Parade and eggs and dairy in general.
I grew up in Orange County, which I'm pretty sure is now mainly known for superficial rich people and reality TV.
