What is your town known for?

Re: What is your town known for?

  • I grew up in a town just south of Fresno called Selma and we were known as "the raisin capital of the world." The Sunmaid Raisin factory is located just south of Selma.

Now that I live in Fresno, we're known for..

Bad stuff: drunkest city in America, high unemployment, high pollution (more of a geographical flaw), and a crappy downtown,

Good stuff: we're near Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks,  agriculture, good schools (Clovis Unified), 5th largest city in California, halfway between LA and SF, home to the Giants' AAA ball club (Fresno Grizzlies), home to William Saroyan, good cost of living,

Selma was also called the Teen Pregnancy Capital of the country. A few years ago at least it had the highest teen pregnancy rate of the nation.

Fresno is also known for being where Anne Heche ran off to when she had some mental issues. Although I think in reality she was off in a field somewhere outside the city.

It's funny people outside of CA (and even to some degree in S. Cal) haven't heard of San Jose at all. Silicon Valley, yes, but they have no concept of its connection to SJ.

Speaking of having no knowledge of a place, I have no idea what the town we're moving to is known for. I'd never heard of it before we found the apt.
