Re: how did you meet YH/W/SO (from MM)

  • we were a blind date.

My sorority sister had transfered right before our senior year in college to go to USAFA. By the time I graduated she had dropped out, and she was having a really hard time. After I graduated I moved down to live with her in Colo Springs. She wanted to set me up with someone, I was like "no way." All the guys she knew were freshman, and I was uninterested.

She was really pushing her bf's roomie. I was still like "no" because he was younger and in the military (I didnt want to deal with all that... HA!) but she won me over, because she was telling me he was the funniest guy she knew, and at least I could laugh. I went out with him. and it was the best date ever, even though we saw Nacho Libre (roomie's bf's choice) then just hung out drinking.

It was pretty much solidified after that. Room mate was a horrible, horrible situation, but I got DH out of it! I moved out like two months after I moved in.

  • J and I had had the same friends for 3 years.  He was in and out of both bars I worked in durring that time.  We hung out at the same places.  We never met.

About a month after I got back from OSUT, I was out and waiting on one of my friends to get off work so we could hang out.  I decided to call another friend to see what she was doing.  She told me to come down to a bar and hang out.

I walked in and nearly tripped over my feet when I saw these two guys leaning on the bar.  They were both beautiful in very manly ways.  I walked over to my friends and talked for a few minutes.  My one friend said she wanted to introduce me to her new fiance.  Whe walked me right over to the two hot guys at the bar.  She introduced me to her fiance and his friend, J.  That was it.  We didn't notice a single other person around us for the rest of the night, not even our friends.  We've been together ever since.

We still have no idea how we never met.  We figure we just weren't ready for each other before then.

  • i had just moved to texas and hated the doggy daycare i tried for mason.  i started taking him to the dog park every day after work.  i noticed my h right away; he looked shy and sweet.  we started talking and stayed at the park until after dark a few nights just chatting.  he asked for a date pretty quickly, and we had a great first date.  then he asked for a second date, but i kind of blew him off.  i was just anxious.  then he asked again for a second date, and it was wonderful.  we were inseparable after that.
  • We had mutual friends. He knew of me for about a year before we were actually introduced. One night I went with my girlfriends to meet the bigger group at Village Inn. He was the only person that I didn't know at the table. I remember him doing something funny and I thought he would be a cool guy to get to know. I wasn't really looking for a boyfriend though. We went for a few dates during the summer before his senior year at the USAFA, when he came back from whatever stuff he had to do for school we decided to make it a relationship.

  • I had just broken up with my ex bf a month prior to agreeing to go out with "mike" who asked me to go out on a group date lol. He asked my H and one of his other girl friends to come along to be his wing man and I ended up hitting it off with H instead. 3 hours into the night we were dancing and making out among other things, I was pretty hammered though. The next morning, we had brunch at some fancy restaurant and I ended up throwing up my lobster bisque all over him and the car.

Not the classiest of my weekends but I must have done something right because he called me the following Wednesday to see a movie and we've been inseparable ever since. Oh and "mike" ended up as a groomsman at our wedding and agrees that my H and I are perfect together so no harm feelings lol :)

  • We met at a New Year's Eve party in 2004.  My BF at the time and DH had mutual friends.  My BF ditched me at the party.  DH came over and was telling me how effed up that was and we got to chatting, and didn't notice anyone else the rest of the night.  We exchanged e-mails at the end of the night bc he was getting ready to leave for his 2nd deployment.  We e-mailed a few times back and forth while he was deployed and for a few months after.  Then, I didn't hear from him for like 6 months until I got a random myspace message from him.

In  '06 he PCSed to VA, and was coming home a few weekends a month to hang out and visit.  He "just happened" to be at a few of the same places I was.  He finally worked up the nerve to ask me out a few weeks before he PCSed to Germany.  We've been together ever since.

  • My freshman year of college, I had just joined my sorority when one of the older girls (now my best friend, "Big" sister, and maid of honor at our wedding) talked me into going to a "Toga Tea" our sorority was putting on with two other fraternities. A friend of mine from PSYC 101 introduced me to DH, they were friends from ROTC. DH introduced himself and told me that my toga, "looked like a prom dress." We talked for a few weeks and went out on our first date in October 2004 and have been together ever since!

  • We worked at Starbucks together. I was his boss and we thought our relationship was super secret since it was against company policy for management/regular staff to date. We were sick of hiding and I was sick of a co-worker flirting heavily with him and even asking him out on a date in front of me! So he found another job and apparently the store manager was 90% sure we were going out the whole time and didn't give a crap. The flirty co-worker on the other hand was embarrassed and was bitchy_to me from then on out.

  • We had a mutual best friend for about a year. We met at a picnic, when I came with this friend in 06. She actually told him to stay away from me because I was with someone else at the time. He didn't though and we talked off and on all summer. Things with the guy I was with ended at the beginning of the school year and I wasn't looking for anything at the time. He went to school out of state and we decided to hang out when he came home on fall break. And it just went from there.

We did find out that when we were in elementary school, the building where I went to school was his church. His dad was the pastor so he was there all the time. A kid in my class was friends with both of us then as well. I'm pretty sure we may have crossed paths at some point and not known it.

  • We worked together, but we didn't really talk to each other. He was on a ladder stapling stuff into the ceiling when his friend kept moving around the ladder he was on so he started shooting staples at him and ended up hitting a few off me on accident. We got stuck doing a floorset with just each other and we found out we both went to the same high school. We didn't know if he had graduated the year before I started high school or my freshman year so I started looking him up in my yearbooks and couldn't find him. I looked him up in our work schedule (which he still teases me about to this day) and found him on Facebook. We started talking right away and started dating a week or two after we started talking on facebook. Not very romantic lol

  • I had just come home from my tour in Iraq and got selected to do a year tour as a trainer on AD. He had just extended into a second year of the same tour at the same unit. He wasn't going to stay for a second year but had decided to last minute. I'm glad he did.

  • We have known of each other probably our entire lives. We grew up in the same small town, went to the same small school, ect. I didn't really notice him until HS, he was always at school early because his brother was in jazz band and they had zero period so E was always sitting out on the benches in front of the band room reading when I got to school. I would go get my hot cocco and say hi. He would always carry my orchestra bells for band activities for me. And then my senior year I looked up in the bleachers during  the Christmas concert and saw this guy in dress blues. We talked for an hour after and my cousin said it was like no one else in the world existed. He was on recruiting orders for like a month( this was right after hurricane Katrina and he had come home for his grandmother's funeral and was unable to get back because of the closed airports so they put him on those temp orders while he was home) and was in the library every Wednesday after lunch so I always took the long way to my locker on Wednesdays just to see him! We started dating almost a year later when I was in college and have been together ever since.

  • We are a true "modern day" love story--we met online. He was deployed to Afghanistan at the time. We traded emails daily for 11 weeks before he redeployed. Shortly after he got home, we went on our first date, and by the end of that evening, I knew he was "the one". I had dated a lot before meeting him (I was 34 when we met, I'd been dating for 20 years!!!), I knew this was different. I waited a very long time for the right one to come along--and, like our son, he was worth the wait!

  • I like our story :)  It may end up being a novel b/c I knew him for 6 years before dating.

It was the first week of college, and my room was at the top of the stairs.  The door was open, and there were 2 guys in my room, one a friend from high school, the other from my orientation group.  One of them saw H in the hallway talking to a hot woman who lived on my floor, so they called him in to say "dude, how'd you talk to her... she's soooo hot."  That's pretty much a verbatim quote.

H spent the next 2 hours giving a lecture on how to pick up women, with the basics boiling down to "women are people" and "conversation is the key."  Essentially, they're your equals and not just a *** dumpster, although H didn't say that so crudely.  Music to my feminist ears.

So, we were close friends from then on, made out on and off for the next couple years, until I had a serious boyfriend that I lived with for more than half of college and somewhat lost touch until senior year when we were in a couple classes together.

Then I moved after graduation (which destroyed the relationship with the college bf).  I was still in phone contact with H every couple of months.  One thanksgiving, 2 years after graduation, he came out to Colorado to see his grandmother and invited me.  Pretty much, the rest is history, although it did take him a few months to convince me to actually date him.  At that point in my life, where I was single, free, starting a career, in a place I loved, I was not at all excited about dating someone in the military that would make me move.

Funny thing, though, when I finally told my parents I was dating him, my mom had remembered me telling her about my friends freshman year and said I had stars in my eyes when I talked about him.  Also, our sophomore year (so, still 5 years before we dated), he was lamenting how he didn't really want to date anyone b/c he knew he'd be moving all over with the mil and didn't want to put anyone through that, and I thought to myself that I would move for someone like that.  Like being the key word since he really wasn't on my radar, but it was one of those "one day in the future when I actually am maybe considering settling down, I want someone as good as him"

  • At a bar/club. He had just arrived at his first duty station an hour from my hometown and I was an 18 and having fun. I was out with a girlfriend and he was with some guys he worked with, one of the guys who was his superior at the time told him to come dance with me, I guess he liked me since he asked me for my number before I left. He called me the following week to go out to dinner, I was drunk the night we met so I didn't really remember him other than thinking he was hot so I made it a double date with my bff just in case he was a psycho.

  • The very first time we met she came to my office to purchase tickets to a fundraiser.  She threw out names of people she was bringing as though I was supposed to know how important they all were but I just found her sort of scary.

About 6 months later a mutal friend asked K to join one of the event committees I was on.  She starting swinging by my office to drop off event stuff and I would make her wait downstairs while I checked my makeup.  And the security guard there knew her car and when she was in the parking lot would call me and say "scary lady is here."

After the fundraiser we were planning we began to hang out at a local pub now and again.  One day she asked me cancel a date I had and instead go with her to SF for the day.  I cancelled my date and the rest is history.

C and I have a similar story. We had the same social circle for 5+ years; we later learned we'd even been at some of the same parties/events and had never met.

One year for NYE, my BFF's at-the-time FI set me up to meet one of his co-workers from the base. The blind date and I did not hit it off, and C, blind date's roommate, tried to get me to give his roommate a 2nd chance. By midnight, C had changed his mind and was asking me to breakfast. We've been all but inseperable ever since.

  • I met S the first day of college, when I was 17 years old.

I had gotten lost and showed up late to my math class. There was only 1 seat left in the entire room, in the far corner at the worst angle ever. The teacher announced that these would be our seats for the semester. I noticed the guy sitting next to me was wearing jeans, a hoodie, a hat and sunglasses indoors and I thought that was weird considering the fact that it was August and like 100 degrees outside. S was my partner for worksheets, which was awesome because I am terrible at math and he's a math whiz but he really didn't talk to me other than class related stuff.

I had other classes with several friends of his from high school, and not too soon after we all started hanging out. I thought S was funny and cute but I was dating someone else at that point. That guy was being really clingy so I ended up breaking it off. S heard from our friends that I was single, asked me out, and we had instant chemistry.

  • My dad was the best man at M's oldest sister's wedding when we were little. I was four, he was eight, and he was the cutest boy I'd ever seen. Over the next few years, I'd see updated pictures of M whenever I'd visit his sister's house and I developed quite the little crush. I married him in MASH and the whole deal.

Fast forward many, many years to when we were both in college (my crush on M was a distant memory by then, of course). It was Christmastime and I was recently happily single when I checked my voicemail after work one night and heard my childhood crush on the other end. Turns out, M had seen my family's Christmas card picture at his sister's house and asked for my number--much to her delight.

I called M back, we talked for an hour and set up our first date... and the rest is history!

  • Oh my gosh Ash. Cutest story ever!

J and I met right after he came back from Iraq. I was bartending in one of the diviest bars in Oceanside, and I was picking up my paycheck before I went out to a ridiculous dance place/bar in another town. I saw J and his friend, thought J was adorable, so I made fun of his friend's t-shirt (a college that had just lost to like, Appalachian State or something). J saw the helicopter pin on my purse and asked me about it, and then asked me about my Obama pin.

The guy I was going to the other place with was getting impatient (FTR, it wasn't a date, but I'm sure he would have liked it to be), so we left. We get to the other place and are hanging out when who do I see but J and his friend. I start talking to them again, piss off my guy friend, and then I finally admit that I want to be a Marine (I don't generally start off conversations like that, since I almost got punched once by a very inebriated misogynist 03, because I was too uppity for his tastes. Anyway, I asked J what his MOS was, and then OF COURSE we start conversing about our mutual distaste for the Osprey implementation. Lol.  So I'm drunk, my guy friend is mad and my DD, so we get ready to leave. I tell J to come into my work the next night to see me, and I left. The guy friend was not particularly capable of driving my car despite swearing that he could handle it. Lots of braking and strange driving. J ended up being behind us and knew it was me, and followed us to make sure we didn't end up in a fiery ball.

The next day, he gets to the bar at like 2pm because I didn't tell him that my shift started at 8pm. So by the time I get there (and I got all goofy smiley when I saw a truck with GA plates in the parking lot), J is was-ted. He was all sorts of silly, I gave him a ride home (nothing happened), and that was it.

So, basically we met and fell in love because of helicopters and beer.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • I was going into the 9th grade, C was going into 8th. He came to visit his dad for the summer and we met at church in Sunday School. His step brother was good friends with my little brother and he came over to the house with him one day. We kept up talking all while he went back to military academy and grew apart after a year.

C called me at the beginning of my senior year of college to see if it was the same girl in his cell that he knew years ago. It was! That was August 2008, we were married May 30, 2009. :)

  • My parents bought a house and moved us off post in '01. I wound up living across the street and one house away from H. At first, we didn't like each other - he thought I was uptight and too smart for my own good; I thought he was a stupid boy who only wanted to play video games and make out with girls. Throughout high school though, we had started to hang out because our sisters were friends and played on the same traveling volleyball team.

My senior year of high school, we spent A LOT of time together. I was really stressed out about college, and he was there to calm me down and help me through that process. I realized how sweet of a guy he was and started to develop a crush. Right before graduation, he admitted he'd been trying to get close to me for awhile and asked if we could spend more time together. We dated that entire summer and made it official right before I left for college, and we've been together ever since.

  • We worked at a summer camp together.  He was the head lifeguard and I was the gift shop manager.  He was 22 I was 18.  I sat at his table one day to avoid someone else I had dated (who worked at the camp as well).  After that there was many movives in the staff lounge where we cuddled together.

Seriouslly I think we are living parelle lives!!! Big Smile.  I know totally where you are coming from.  The only difference is H just got back when I met him.

I met H online as well.  I live in a very "toursity" town and people just come and go and it is really hard to meet people.  They are either married golfers trying to hook up for the weekend or just blowing through looking for a summer romance before they go back to college...WAY to young for me.

Several of my friends met their S/Os online as well and were trying to talk me into it.  So one holiday season, one of my friends came to visit me.  People used to call us Jack and Karen (off of Will and Grace).  Around the holidays I get two people off of the "Piggly Wiggly" Christmas tree which has elderly people in homes that have no families.  Any way we went shopping for those two little elderly people that I got and after a few martinis I looked at my friends and said (with tears in my eyes) "I don't want to be on the Piggly Wiggly Chirstmas tree."  He said do something about it, prince charming is not going to come knocking on the door.

So asfter much thought, I decided what the heck.  I went online and it was just going to be for a few months just to prove everyone wrong...or so I thought.  I got some really funny stories out if the experience and a wonderful H!!! I could not be happier...ok now I sound like a PSA.

  • We met through my friend/his brother, while he was deployed. He had just gotten out of a relationship, so did i, and his brother insisted we talk to eachother. We just clicked immediately, and when he got back to the states we remained inseperable. 5 years later here we are, married and with a little boy :)
