I sorta knew what was going on when I stopped on Fox last night for their 10pm broadcast.  But I didn't give it much thought.

You didn't give much thought to a guy in Grand Rapids who killed seven people, including two kids, led police on a chase through the heart of the city, and was currently holed up with three more hostages?

I honestly make a point of not giving these types of things much thought while they're happening. I feel like our media tends to report a lot via hearsay and without real facts. It NEVER would occur to me to look for or listen to a police scanner. In fact, it sort of grosses me out that people would want to hear blow by blow of violence. But, I have a different background than a lot of people. Anyway, whenever some major "catastrophe" (whether real or media-ized) happens, I generally turn it off for a while until the dust settles and then try to find facts rather than hanging on every bit of rumor flying around. I even did that with 9-11. I just went into media shut down until they had enough time to process what they thought REALLY happened. Otherwise, it can be stress inducing over something that didn't actually even happen, or was different than reported.
  • Zebe, you make some legitimate points, but this event was a little different.  There were incidents all over town.  I started watching the news because the events were blocks from my friends house, and then kept watching because they got a little too close to our house.  In this case, the media served me in making sure my family was not in harms way.

  • The class I'm taking right now is talking about the effects of incarceration on families, mental health in released prisoners and repeat offender rates. It's very interesting after the events last week.
