Men's summer wedding fashion (I don't really know what to call this?)

M and I already have 5 weddings for next summer (!) so I'm trying to plan ahead.

M usually wears a suit and we'll get him a new shirt or tie to match whatever I'm wearing. 2 of the weddings are beach weddings so I feel like a suit would be weird?

What would you dress your guy in for a beach wedding? And, do you think it would be "out of style" by next year if I grabbed it on summer clearance this year?

  • I think a nice pair of khaki's and a white button up shirt should be sufficient for a beach wedding...

  • I was going to post about the khakis and button up shirt.  I don't think it has to be white but its normally the color you see.

As far as other Summer wedding attire-maybe everything but the suit jacket should be enough.  Edgar doesn't dress NEARLY as good as Mark so I'm not a good reference when it comes to Men's fashion. :)

  • Not to a beach wedding but the regular summer wedding.

  • I think that a nice pair of khakis and dress shirt is the way to go. I wouldn't worry about a tie for a beach wedding.

  • I think it depends on the wedding. Our wedding was a beach wedding and the guys wore full tuxes, guests worse suits and ties.

We have also been to other beach weddings where khakis, and no tie would not have been appropriate as everyone was in suits and ties

I have only been to one beach wedding where khaki's and no tie was appropriate.

  • DH has a sear sucker suit that he LOVES!  It's perfect for such events like a beach wedding but now everyone would be comfortable wearing it.

I'd go khacki's - shirt and jacket - no tie.... to a beach wedding.

It just seems like if it were on the beach, like in the sand, a full suit would be too much.  IMO.  Edgar would not make it in a full suit and tie anywhere in regards to the outside.  I'm going to count down the hours he asks to change from his cousins wedding that we are standing up in when we go to California.  Their wedding is going to be outside.

  • The only time I've seen guys in suits at a beach wedding was if they were part of the wedding party and that's what the bride/groom had decided.  As guests, it seems as though the dress code is always khakis and a button up shirt.

People wear shorts to beach wedding here because its so damn outside.  In july we've hit triple digits 11/12 days.  I would NOT wear anything long sleeved outside unless you wanted to die!

  • My parents have five this summer so they feel your pain! Eek! One of the beach weddings said "beach formal" on the invite and my mom called the mob to inquire. What Cristin et al. Are suggesting - no tie - was accurate. I've actually seen few beach weddings where the groom wore a tie. I think being casual is generally part of the point.

Yeah, the weddings we have attended, including ours were in the sand. We were in South Florida, it was 101 out, so it was hot, its not like we were in the sand in the winter. The others were in the Carolina's both were in the sand and everyone wore full attire and two more in SoFl.

I just would caution against banking on it being so informal. Everyone is different, and A would have been way underdressed had he shown up to our friends weddings in khakis and no tie.

Also, our wedding venue wouldn't allow guests in the ballroom w/o full suit, tie, & dress shoes... so if someone had not worn the attire as indicated on the invite they couldn't have dined. Some places have strict dress codes.

  • If a wedding has a strict dress code it would be indicated on the invite. Otherwise, you have to assume a beach wedding is informal.

    I've seen it happen before.

That's probably why she's confused in the first place-because the dress code attire wasn't placed on the invite.  Which would probably mean its not strict.  Kate, I would ask just to make sure and be on the safe side.

  • According to Men's Warehouse: What to wear to a beach wedding?

If you're a guest and a suit seems too dressy, silk or lightweight wool slacks are a good choice. Cotton khakis may meet the dress code, but slacks are more elegant and generally more appropriate for a wedding, even a sandy one. Bring a casual sport coat to dress up the look. You can always leave it in the hotel room if it feels like too much.

While a shirt and tie are certainly an option (it is a wedding, after all), consider silk camp collar shirts or other refined sportswear tops to give the wedding a truly tropical feel.

There's no invites yet since it's not until next year - I was just hoping that if we have to buy anything I'd be able to do it from this year's clearance rather than wait until next year.

I was just flipping through photos of the reception hall (I don't know why I didn't think of that before...) and most of them look like nice pants and a button down shirt so I think we'll go that route unless the invites say something different.

My brain doesn't work today. When I read this I thought you meant the actual mob... like organized crime. I was really confused why your mom would call them for fashion etiquette advice. lol

Don't mind me... I haz the dumb.

  • I'd go with khakis and a button down shirt like PP... white or a light color like blue or green or yellow (or pink if he's a man who would were that... my M would never ever) would be nice. I would throw in a tie though. Just my opinion.

Sounds liek the mob gave good advice though from what Maria said. Maybe I should start calling them up in situations like this. :)

Well I am equally dumb b/c I just now got was mob meant. Seriously, I have been reading what you guys wrote asking what else mob would mean besides organized crime!

  • I would go khakis and a light colored shirt.  We went to a wedding on the beach at Sandals in Jamaica in December and DH wore khakis and a white button down.  I was wearing a black dress with white polka dots so he went with the white button down, otherwise, he would have worn a color.

And that was us last year, so I also feel your pain!!
