WWMND? (BR?)

Re: WWMND? (BR?)

  • I love J but I wouldn't go. It isn't worth it to take a non-vaccinated child to an event with a lot of people. Breastfeeding is also super time consuming and can still be in the uncomfortable phase.

    I'm right in-between Pumpkin and Sgt M.

I think ultimately it is going to depend on how labor, delivery, adjusting, nursing, etc., etc., goes. I was in no way shape or form ready to be sitting in a car for HOURS for at least a month after my delivery. I had a vaginal delivery but my recovery from it lasted way longer than someone who underwent a c/s. Honestly, I think part of it was not getting the rest I needed. I was up trying to entertain our guests (going to aquariums, lunches, dinners, etc)  and trying to keep them happy for the first 3 weeks of DD's life. Obviously it doesn't have to be that way, but you just really never know what is going to happen in the L&D room.

Would your DH be flying/driving back with you after the graduation? How long would you stay there? If its just one or two nights, I would honestly ask yourself if its worth all the planning and unknowns. That's a long way to travel with a new baby. How old do you anticipate the baby being during all of this? 2weeks? 6 weeks? 8 weeks? The younger the age, I would be more inclined to just stay home. If he was 6wks+ I might make the trip depending on how well things were going at home.

P.S. an extra 2 cents...if you plan on breastfeeding, just plan on it and do it. Don't already doubt your ability to. Positive thinking, yo!

Mango are you my twin? Other than the birth stuff I could have written this word for word, even the 2 cents at the end!

You have no idea how labor or delivery is going to go and your recovery might be a lot longer than you think. I hope not but you never know. I had a friend who was very healthy/fit ect and had a 4th degree tear and the recovery was like Mango's, a very very long road. I don't know that all the planning and worry would be worth 1 or 2 days to me. For us E would rather me stay home and take care of the baby. Also that time of the year people are generally germy and I would not take a new born around that many germy  people, let alone on a plane that recirculates air. I get sick each time I set foot on a plane, can you image a new born?

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I'd want to take a fresh baby on the plane with me without at least having someone to help me wrangle all the baby shiit.

Just thinking of packing, carrying everything through security and then sticking my fresh born kid on a plane with a bunch of germy mouth breathers? Not to much And I'm not even a germaphobe.

Agreed, but then again I'm kind of a germaphobe.

I'm the opposite of a germophobe and I wouldn't even consider doing this. I took DS to a big family thing 5 hours away at 5 weeks old, but I had DH and it was in our own car.

And lugging all the crap with that you need for a newborn, by yourself, that soon after delivery? Hell no. Overnight visits with DS involve a full trunk. Personally- I'd tell DH too bad, so sad. Not happening.

Also depending on your labor and delivery are, you may not even be allowed to drive at that point. I was actually told no flying for like 3 weeks after my c-section.

Also, you would have to fly into Atlanta, rent a car and then drive to Columbus.  The only other option is to hop the bus to Columbus and rent a car there.  There is absolutely no way in hell that I would put a new born on that bus.

Yeah there's no way I'd take a bus haha! GROSS. And of course before I go anywhere I'd make sure he'd get his shots and vaccinations.

There's just too many variables right now so I guess I'll just have to wait closer to the date. It's all contingent on so many things I don't even know why I'd bother trying to plan anything right now. I guess I just want to know if it's possible to travel with a several week old newborn...and the best way to do it.

We shall see. Thanks for the insight ladies, I'll keep y'all updated.

Sigh. So many things to learn....I'm going to have to steal your e-card siggy with the two parents saying they wish they knew what they were doing lol.

  • FWIW, babies aren't puppies. You can take them out before they get their 2 month shots provided your H doesn't have polio or something and you aren't planning to let randoms lick your baby's fists.

LOL That's a bit of an exaggeration but my point is that at less than two months old, you're not likely to let him lay about the floor or put him in germy high chairs or something like that so his exposure would be relatively low and made even lower by herd immunity.

The reason I'm not a fan of the plane idea is because the air in the cabin is recirculated. So unlike being out anywhere else, your kid is breathing the same air for the duration of the plane ride.

He will get some shots at birth though. HiB I thing. Ugh, my kids are too big. LOL I was also sure they either shot them or tested them or something at a week old. So if you're worried about that, now you know, a shot or two in the hospital, maybe one at a week old, check ups at 2, 4, 6, 12, 15, 18 months and two years and most of those will involve shots. But not to worry, the doctor will tell you at the hospital when to bring the kid back and at each subsequent appointment. They will also offer to make the appointment at that time.

    So you'll be fine.

Also, personally, provided you and the baby don't have an complications and breastfeeding goes relatively smoothly, I think you could make the trip. I think you could probably even make it on your own.  If it helps, I took two kids on a 8 hour road trip to watch someone graduate some school. It took longer than 8 hours because they were 9 months and not quite three but it got done and I did it by myself. But if you can get someone to go with you, it would be easier.

HepB is at Birth, the next shots aren't until 2 months. Yesterday I was trying to figure out what shots Bean will get when she turns two so I was checking out the vaccine cheat sheet the doctor gave me.

Just keep him away from those nasty shopping cart handles and you'll be good. ;)

  • LOL I knew there was an H and a b involves. SO THERE lolol Now that I think about it, they did the second PKU at their one week appt, which is a test for a specific disorder.

OP, you'll probably want to talk to your doctor about a flu shot. Also, I forgot to mention that I wouldn't worry about vaxxing so much as you're going to a military graduation. They're all vaccinated, for stuff they didn't even know they should be vaccinated. LOL So herd immunity ftw!
