Has anyone used Angie's List?

What was your experience and did you find and like the vendors that you were looking for?  Was it worth the membership fee?
I live in the Katy area.

 TIA

Re: Has anyone used Angie's List?

  • We have relied on it a lot in finding people to work on the house we just bought. Search around for promo codes, and there may also be an additional discount if you pay with paypal. There was for us a few months ago.

When you sign up you also get access to groupon-like deals for various services. We used that for a good deal on a full electrical inspection when we were negotiating for repairs.

If you foresee needing to research a lot of different types of companies then I do think it's a good deal. I also rely on word of mouth, but it's a big help when you can't find references for everyone.

I've had very good experiences with the reviews on service magic. It's free. The phone numbers on the service magic website are for service magic - how they get paid, by being the middle man. I usually read the reviews pick a few contractors I like and google their direct numbers and call. I find that faster than the middle man route, but going through the website isn't bad either.

  • I get emails from them since I did a trial a couple of years ago and then didn't continue when I no longer needed the service... They have a 40% off membership promotion going on right now: VOLTS12 is the promo code, it expires 7/31.
