Feeling ignored and pregnant

Re: Feeling ignored and pregnant

  • Here's what I found when I taught ESL.  One of my kids had a lot of reading material/input available in both languages, and his parents would encourage him to demonstrate what he had learned at home.  The other child didn't have access to this.  The first one tended to do better in all classes, not just mine, though both were brilliant students.

I fully plan on teaching my child Spanish early on, and I want them to be bilingual.  However, I do think that it's important for a child to have input in both languages as much as possible as soon as possible.  I would even tell my Spanish students to listen to radio and TV in Spanish so that they could have that input, and at least attempt to read Spanish language newspapers and articles, even if they didn't fully understand it.  The ones that listened tended to do better.

But yes, skills transfer.  The extra language input just helps second language acquisition along a bit.  And the fact that the U.S. is such a monolingual culture, and belligerently so, drives me bonkers.

Um, seriously, calling someone a cvnt because they call you out on your ignorant racist bullschit? No. Just no.

And the reason people are offended is because you're spewing racist, xenophobic bile. The fact that you continue to do so makes you a fvcking idiot.

Well, knowing is half the battle.

And if I relate to anything it's some uppity ass white biitch assuming I'm trash because my skin is darker than hers.

You're more than a fuuking idiot. You're a shitty excuse for a human being and you need to DIAF.

    A very hot one.

And for the record, I might have a c-nt but it doesn't make me one. Just like speaking doesn't make you worth listening to.

While I in no way apologize for my former comment on the status of you're intelligence, I will admit that it was an emotional response and not a particularly rational one. Let me try it this way:

First you seem to believe that no "native speaker" would use the term "baby daddy". I assume here that you mean native to the U.S. The term "baby daddy/momma" are actually thought to be Americanized versions of Jamaican terms. So in fact her usage of them makes her seem quite native, at least enough to understand cultural slang.

Second you say that she must be some "ghetto Mexican or Black chick", implying that these two groups of women are in fact not native because in your experience they have used this term regularly (something again you say is not native). So Mexican and Black women can be in no way "native" according to you? What are we then, those of us who were born here, in your estimation?

Third, are you really commenting on her grammar and punctuation when apparently you can't be arsed to use proper capitalization or punctuation yourself?

Fourth, I won't touch what you said regarding repeating yourself in stores or at fast food chains, because your own ignorance speaks loud and clear.

And finally, no I in no way meant to imply that you were a fuuking idiot for speaking your mind. You most certainly have the right to free speech. I, however, also reserve the right to believe the things you say are ignorant, misguided, racist, and patently ridiculous.

  • Ha, I wasn't being racist. Look up the facts. You dont see as many white girls calling their child's father a "babydaddy". Sure, there are some on Jerry Springer or other reality tv shows but white girls aren't the only ones on those shows. I even stated that it was no offense to the decent ones; which you immaturely STILL took offense to. I simply stated my thoughts and opinions on who i felt like she was. I dont go "clubbing" while i'm pregnant, the fact of even putting your baby in such a scene is beyond trashy. Calling me a "uppity ass white biitch" makes you no better than a shitty excuse for a human being as well if you want to go on that route. I'm not by any means racist, but i am honest about who and want i dont like and if you have a problem with it then get the f**k over it; it's a free country =] Get your panties out of a wad. How much of this is parental involvement?  It seems like a kid whose parents are actively engaging them in what they've learned at school is going to do better than one whose parents are not regardless of languages spoken.  Same as the type of kids that would follow a recommendation like that compared to a kid that didn't.

I'd love to see some studies on it because I really have no idea.  All I know is that my MIL that spoke mostly broken English at home did a huge disservice to DH.  He struggled a lot in school and has not retained much of his native language.  But also the schools he went to were not well equipped for a bilingual child that spoke a second language other than Spanish.

Okay, this drives me nuts as a former bilingual teacher.  If you have broken English, please do NOT only speak English to your child.  We had lots of kids whose parents employed this strategy and they were doubly screwed because they weren't learning their native language or English.  Read to your child in your native language a LOT.  If possible, teach them to read and write in their native language.  Whenever possible, expose them to native English speakers--but in interactive settings, not just TV.  The literacy skills your child gains in your native language will transfer to English, and studies show bilingual kids will catch up to or surpass their peers by about 4th grade (when in a bilingual program). It's the kids who don't know what reading is , how writing works, that letters represent sounds, the direction of a book, etc.when they start kindergarten who have the serious problems with learning to read--not kids who have these skills in their native language.

Probably not where you thought this post would go,  but there it is.

Thank you baby jeebus! This exactly. ALL OF THIS!!

Also, bilingual children do have advantages in a variety of ways. However, studies show that the best way for a child to gain and keep fluency in both language is to speak the foreign language in the home nearly exclusively and to speak the common language outside of it.

Yup all of this. I can speak and read fluent Spanish because it was kept in my home growing up. Double dog dare someone to make a racist comment about me.

No racist comment, but can I thank your parents?  Because not enough parents do this, IMHO.

  • The xenophobia is strong in this thread.

-Child of a non-native English speaker who spoke to them only in English checking in.

PP who said she should talk to her kids in English is an idiot.  Kids pick up on what their parents say.  If a parent isn't fluent in a language and has grammar/pronunciation problems, the kid will pick up on that.  Since you're worrying about kids needing extra help, Guess what?  I, who grew up in the environment you tout as perfection, had to go to the special trailer behind my school for kids with speech problems because I spoke English as my mother did.  I had issues pronouncing certain English sounds and there were a lot of English words I just didn't use correctly.  To this day there are words of which I'm not sure if they are English or German because while she was speaking English to me, if she didn't know an English word she'd just use the German one in the middle of an English sentence.  There are also certain phrases and sentence patterns that I don't know whether they are regional and used by native English speakers or if they are a back-asswords attempt to speak English within the confines of German grammar rules.

For the love of God, do not speak to your child solely in a language at which you are not fluent.

Beyond that, I am surprised how many people seem to think that there is no reason to know your native language.  When her bilingual kid applies for the same job as your English-only kid, chances are her kid is going to be the one getting the job.

While it would be more amusing to me to simply allow you to assume whatever you like, no I am not in fact "some sort of hispanic or latin american". I am an African American woman, and while yes the first emotion I felt was anger, then outrage, and finally offense, at this point all I can muster up is a vague feeling of pity towards you. The fact that you believe you can say something offensive, but soften it by declaring "NO OFFENSE", makes me weep for the future of AMERICA.

Oh, speaking broken English to a child is a bad BAD idea.  It will backfire.  Badly.  I just think that input (having reading material, radio, TV, etc.) about will help.

With both kids, I knew the families.  Both were involved, but the difference was literally the reading material.  Both did fine, but one had a bit more difficulty, though both progressed as planned.

Keep in mind this is just my experience, and relatively short experience at that.

In general, I think the US needs to up its bilingual and foreign language programs. But then again, we've got that  xenophobic monolingual culture thing working against us.

Part of the struggle I had to teach Spanish was that my kids saw no point because "they needed to learn OUR language, because it's OUR country."  I had to overcome the racism in order to get through to them. It was maddening.

Ha, I wasn't being racist. Look up the facts. You dont see as many white girls calling their child's father a "babydaddy". Look, asstwat.  I don't care what race this woman is.  You were being racist.

Sure, there are some on Jerry Springer or other reality tv shows but white girls aren't the only ones on those shows. I even stated that it was no offense to the decent ones; which you immaturely STILL took offense to.Wait, what?  You said the 'few decent ones.'  That's too insulting for words.  And it's racist bullschit.

I simply stated my thoughts and opinions on who i felt like she was. And you've had the same done to you.  You're an ignorant, racist, xenophobic jackhole.  Doesn't feel so good, now does it?

I dont go "clubbing" while i'm pregnant, the fact of even putting your baby in such a scene is beyond trashy. Calling me a "uppity ass white biitch" makes you no better than a shitty excuse for a human being as well if you want to go on that route. Clubbing while pregnant has not a damn thing to do with race.  And you got called an uppity ass white b*tch because you're acting like one.

I'm not by any means racist, but i am honest about who and want i dont like and if you have a problem with it then get the f**k over it; it's a free country =] Oh, for the love of sweet baby jeebus, don't pull that card.  It being a free country does not give you the right to act like a pvta de mierda without someone calling you on it.

Get your panties out of a wad. I never ASSUMED you were trash, you are reading what i write and creating YOUR OWN assumptions. Like i said though, if the shoe fits!  This is just too much idiocy for words.  Seriously.  You need to STFU, because your stupidity burns.

Oh, did i piss the beaner off? Sucks for you =] I'm going to head to bed because unlike you(who is probably some old hag who thrives on internet drama) i have a life and need to get some rest. Enjoy "showing off" and replying back to me since i won't be here any longer. I'm assuming because i am a white girl, i am labeled as racist. However, if i were black, mexican, indian whatever else....it would be okay to speak my mind huh? Anyway, enjoy your night and getting mad at some random stranger. I definitely won't lose sleep over arguing with your "native" ass; night!

You are a racist twatwaffle.  People like you give white people a bad name.
    HTH!  YWIA!

I am having a hard time believing you are "native" seeing as i have never heard any "native" woman speak of their children's father as a "babydaddy" You sound like some ghetto mexican or black chick IMO (no offense to the small amount of decent ones out there)

    Uhm, excuse me???????????

And I thought busting out Consuela was the lowest this post was going to go.

    Who the hell are you?

Are you serious? First, when someone clarifies with "no offense" they are obviously being offensive. Also, with that comment you sound completely ignorant to believe there are only a small amount out there. Sucks to be you I guess.

    MUD.

    And FAIL.

PS- "Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!" (I have the perfect gif. at home for this situation, but I am at work and can't access it)

I'm not dirty or fail mother. I want her dad to take care of her so as to take not so much burden for my husband.

It really shouldn't be a burden for your husband because he is your husband. It all comes with the territory IMO. But since my husband and I don't have children at all I can't say that this is matter of fact but why not. I couldn't imagine marrying someone who wasn't ready to take care of the entire family (with my assistance of course).

As a PP said, this is AMERICA, we shouldn't have to press one for english, nor should i have to repeat anything to anyone when i am making purchases or ordering something.

And I'm sure that if you moved to a new country, you'd have perfectly mastered that countries language immediately before arriving or within a month. I doubt it.  And I hope you never visit a country and don't speak the language...

Guess what - the US is not just made up of people who have been living there for generations.  It's been made up of people from foreign countries since the 1400s and they aren't going to all speak the same language.  So give that *** up...it's ignorant.

I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.
  • In this thread, thousands of elitist b****es who fail to empathize with anyone who is different from them.
    Thoroughly engaged.
  • Holy crapballs! This is NOT the way I thought this thread would go. There is a lot of racist, xenophobic verbal diarrhea BS going on in this thread. It makes me sick. Its one thing to ask the OP to make her thoughts more clear, but to start in with the rest? It just downward spiraled into the toilet. Ick!Indifferent

  • If your exBF is paying child support, you don't really have the right to ask for more, you are also responsible for providing for your child, it is not his job alone.  Maybe you could find a part-time job in the evenings or weekends.  I also find it strange that your husband gives you money to go to clubs, but not for clothes for your child.
  • imagerosesunset:
I go to the club on weekends with my friends. I stay home with my daughter during weekday times so to take care of her. On weekend my husband watch her or sometime her dad so I can have the freetime. I don't drink the alcohol drinks just go to dance and have more fun out of the house. I will stop going when it get closer to the time me for my due date.

Pregnant women in "da club" = trailer park trash.  Please do not ever procreate again.

I was looking for advice not to be ridiculed to by you ladies!

I'm a little ashamed of how this thread turned out...

Please go back and reread. I posted good advice and didn't demean you in anyway.

I agree with all of this. Get rid of this dead beat dad and get rid of this drama and you will be a whole lot happier. That is the best advice I can give you.
