Yes, that comment was the stupidest thing I've ever read. I hate how people use the "I'm a teacher and this is fact..." excuse.
Publius, I finally got to your response. Good one.
Seriously.

o.m.g. I want to cry because of all of the azz-hole comments there! That or hang my head in shame that those people are from the same country as I am.
People are ridiculous.
but I do appreciate the new words I am learning, like 'twatwaffle', I feel enlightened
ETA: I also refrained from commenting on the fact that the USA does not list English as an official language in the first place, but I have tried that comment before on ppl in TX and it never goes well
Oh. My. God. Someone used the word "twatwaffle!" Those b!tches be craaaazy!
Good posts, Publius and Pineapples. And thank god for that BakerMommy post about bilingual children surpassing their peers when properly encouraged. Finally someone had a decent and well-founded opinion.
I'm an American and I know we get classified as being lazy, but I really have never really thought that pressing "1" was such an inconvenience to my life.

Yeah, I know. I have family who have joined the "I'm in America, I shouldn't press 1" group on facebook. I just think it's the stupidest argument and it's so old and it's so ignorant and I hate it. I hate it every time I see it.
What drives me nuts is that most native English speakers don't realize how lucky we are to speak the language that is frequently used in business and travel internationally. Instead, they focus on the tiniest of inconveniences in their little lives. I just think that phrase is just so amazingly ignorant. The rest of the world has such an advantage over English-only speaking America and these people don't even realize it. It drives me crazy.
Wow. Just wow. Telling her she has to speak english at home is what really got me. Um, no. I totally agree with you ladies of course! Also, I'm going to be speaking a language other than the dominant language of my country at home to my kids. That's not going to make them fall behind in school, it'll actually give them the advantage of being bilingual.
But, they'd probably all be okay with that since my first language is English which should obviously take over the world. *eyeroll*
Okay, posted too soon. I finally got to this Tabitha character you speak of and my jaw dropped even further. My blood is boiling with all this nonsense!!!
Good job Publius. I have to say while there was a lot of racism and idiotic ideas about what language to speak at home there were definitely a few people who tried to stomp it out (hindsight mostly) and that gave me hope for humanity. I'm trying to look on the bright side. It's a shame the post went down that path at all though.
ETA: Props to Pineapples too. I can't believe no one said it earlier!
I'm pretty sure OP was MUD, but that doesn't really make it okay to break out the crazy racism.
Between security theater, the conservative extremists, and the trendy xenophobic sentiments, the US just scares the heck out of me these days.
Extremists and xenophobia are found all over the world. The US may be bad, but come on, it's not THAT bad -- even many European countries deal with the same issues seen in the US. And I hardly think the opinions expressed in that thread truly represent the majority of the American population...at least I hope not. I may just be naive though.

She gets called trash in the first response. Isn't it nice when people equate human beings with garbage?
Heartless and cruel to take such low-blows.
We just got anti-Muslim and anti-immigration flyers from the SVP (Swiss people's party) today. The attitude here is far from being open minded in many cases.

Cruel yes, but:
1. anyone who has spent 10 minutes on that board knows that the usual responders can be very harsh.
2. the OP's situation does sound incredibly trashy. Babymama's and Babydaddies make me shudder. Toss in her housing benefit that she mentions she is on, living with her "babydaddy's" mother because she couldn't afford to live elsewhere until her housing benefit came in and she goes clubbing while pregnant. Sounds like Jerry Springer fodder to me as well.
However, toss in that English isn't her first language which leads me to believe that she is an immigrant and it goes from trashy to sad, and I wonder what culture she is from and the circumstances that brought her to the states.
As for the racism:
1. I know it was racist, but I freaking laughed out loud with the Consuela reference. I love Family Guy. But then I realized that was a rather racist and uncalled for reference - and then it just went way, way, way too far.
2. It's infuriating that some "teachers" were commenting that she should speak only English at home. Jesus christ, that just had my blood boiling. And the remarks about not wanting their kids to learn broken English from their parents? Oy vay. That had me reaching for my strangling gloves. Should I not speak Chinese to our kids because my Chinese isn't perfect? So I would rather them not practice it at all at home because they may pick up on some of my linguistic mistakes? I should only speak English to them because my English is perfect? Actually, no. I sometimes stutter and make up words. Perhaps we shouldn't communicate in the home at all, just to be safe.
3. The not only racist but anti-immigration sentiments in that post are shocking.
Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!
I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!

Have you seen the ones with white sheep kicking black sheep out?
I'm stunned reading that post.
Are people really put off my having to press 1 for English? Don't they realise (and it's my industry that put these systems in place) that by directing calls to call handlers that are better able to service customers who speak a different language, that their own wait times will be far fewer, it will cost less to operate the contact centre and in turn make the service cheaper so customers don't pay higher fees? It's not only really helpful for a multiculural customer base but more efficient and therefore cheaper.
Plus, as a non-English speaker, it's a welcome service, which in the reverse situation, English speakers would be eternally grateful for... How many times have those of us in foreign countries (not me, obvs, I'm in the UK) been scared to phone a company because you don't speak the local language fluently?
I'm really scared by that Tabitha person who is so openly racist that she assumes most mexican and black people are trash (except for a 'few'). That makes my blood boil with anger.
