Re: Wednesday Randoms

  • I am fairly certain that H is leaving this afternoon to go out of town for 5 days.  I'm looking forward to the break.  I hope the trip doesn't fall through!  :)
  • We bought a new TV 2.5 years ago and 13 months after we got it, the screen started to show some obnoxious vertical lines of different colors.  It's been getting progressively worse, so we finally got around to taking it in to be repaired.  Ummm...they quoted us $2,375.  We only paid $1,600 for the stupid thing.

Yeah...we are pretty much never buying Sony anything ever again.  Their customer service is horrible.  All they could offer us was a new 55" for $1,000.  Sorry, but I'm not shelling out more money for a TV that will probably only last us another 13 months.  I'm good.

So now we have no TV.

No computer, no TV...if my iPhone ever breaks I will probably cry for a month.  Stick out tongue

  • The H researched the crap out of T.V.s when we bought ours and ended up with a Samsung. We've been VERY happy with it. Could you take it back to the store where you bought it?

  • Because electronics change so fast, repair rarely makes sense.  We bought a DVD player in 1999 (Sony, actually) for probably around $200.  Several years later it had an issue and we brought it in to best buy and I think it was going to cost something like $500 to fix.  This was when new DVD players could be purchase for under $100.  I can't remember the details, but it ended up getting fixed for free.  It was just funny how much the repair was going to cost.
  • Two of three isn't bad for fan installs, right?

LOL, I really hope this is a simple, cheap and quick fix.  If it costs <$150, I'm willing to bet that we still came out ahead with out of pocket costs by DIYing as much as we did.

  • I have zero motivation at work lately.  I have no desire to take on new projects.

Yeah... here too.  My husband is obsessed with TV's.  We actually just got a new one.  He keeps rambling on about all of the features and using nerdy electronics lingo.  I just need to know how to turn it on.

Sorry to hear that yours crapped out on your Molly!  Frustrating.

That would be a negative.  We bought it, and then a week later Circuit City went out of business.

I'm so effing pissed that a Sony TV would last 13 months.  Seriously, I thought that was supposed to be a good brand.  Never again!  Unless after they recieve my letter they either repair my TV for free or give us a new one for super cheap.

  • That stinks about the tv. We are still with the regular 19 inch - 29 inch (I think) tvs and haven't gone with a flat screen yet. I know that Panasonic and some brands are pretty decent.

  • If you're on fb and like funny, do yourself a favor and like/friend/whatever "badbanana."    Here's an example of a fun dispatch of the day: "If the first piece of advice from any life coach isn't "avoid bears" you're being scammed."

    Ha ha.  Love it. :-)

On a bear related note, the recent bear attacks (the couple in Yellowstone, the kids in Alaska) aren't the funnest things to read before going into the wilderness this month.  We literally take every precaution (bear spray, bear bells, clapping/shouting every 1-2 minutes when hiking, no scented items, food cooked/stored away from sleeping area, etc.) but it's still a bit unsettling.

  • I bet, Juli.  I'm glad to read about the precautions.  While I'm sure you guys will be fine, it's still worrisome.

  • Eek Bears.  :::shudder:::

Here is a dumb question:  What stores sell key chains?  Meijer?  Right now, the only key I've gotten replaced is my car key.  It's just a key with no ring.  It's begging to be lost.  I need to bulk it up.

  • I'm sure Meijer has keychains.  I'm pretty sure the one on Harvey makes keys so I'm willing to bet they sell keychains, too.
  • I'm going to complain for a minute:

The class I'm taking online right now is requiring a group project. Ok fine. However, I *of course* was placed in a group with someone who rarely logs in, hasn't fulfilled her portion of the group project and isn't returning course email or discussion board threads started with her name in them. I don't want to contact our prof b/c that seems a bit baby-ish, but our paper is due Tuesday. I can't wait forever for her section of the project!

  • LVila, I was worried about group projects for that very reason.  Do you have her phone number?  Luckily, the folks in my cohort are good communicators (eh, I guess that kind of goes with the profession, eh? ;)) and this hasn't been an issue for me.

Bear spray is an actual thing? I had no idea. Thought it was just a movie gag or something.

No :( If I didn't have to schedule homework time around mommy time, I wouldn't be that worried. There are only so many free "focus-able" hours in my day, though Wink

Ha ha, yup - it's real!  Andy and I both have a canister.

Well, how about that! The things you learn here...

  • Juli, would one use bear spray as a preventitive measure (like, spraying a circle around the night's camp site) or in emergency (like, when a bear is all up in your grill and considering mauling)?

  • D&MJ - I couldn't live without TV and internet. I would be so sad. Actually, I would probably be in really good shape and know how to play the flute or something. Maybe this is for the best??

And as far as key chains go, maybe you should use a big spatula like the keys to the bathroom at a gas station?

Juli - you both sound very prepared for our wilderness adventure. It sounds like the only thing missing is a t-shirt that reads 'Don't mess with me, bear!"

Unfortunately, I'm still really out of shape and lazy.  Embarrassed  Damn iPhone.  Stick out tongue

  • I wish VRBO had better search options.  Grrr.

I have a feeling I'm not going to be able to find anything for next month, which is ridiculous since my search is not limited to a specific area and I'm not all that picky.

This totally made me LOL.  I can get you a nice hub cap if you want Stick out tongue

Only in an emergency.  It's basically pepper spray on acid.  I believe it can cause blindness if sprayed directly in a human's eyes at close range.

Me too.  I switched to using Homeaway.com for that reason.  I think they have better advanced search options.
