Re: How soon did you know...
Great stories all.
My H and I met in Jul '00, became fast friends of the next year. Probably best friends (if I believed in rank-ordering my friends, which I don't) by the spring of '01. By fall everyone assumed we were dating or "something", but no kidding, not so much as a firm handshake. We really weren't. Long story, but basically, I'm not a fan of dating and I was a big fan of H.
Anyway, in Jan '02, after a late night of gay-bar show tune karaoke (I'm not being a jerk, this is literally the theme of the bar) after one of my friend's bdays, H drops me off and tells me "we need to talk". I swear, almost 10yrs later, I sincerely was expecting a lecture about some of my friends not picking up their fair share of the tab. Nope. He basically spend a quality 4hrs explaining why we should date. Insert some tears, couple stray Gone With the Wind references, and we agreed to give it a-go. Ended the night with a H: "Can I call you tomorrow?" Me, "What the heck, you've been calling me for almost 2yrs? Call don't call, I don't care what you do." Yeah, I'm romantic like that.
I went home thinking, 'oh Lord, I've ruined our friendship. he's going to turn into a freak." The fact that my phone rang 2hrs later didn't help... happily, it wasn't H
. We went on our "first date" (ridiculous given the time we spent together) at the end of the week. Within the month he proposed but "took it back" (before I could comment) because, "I know that'll freak you out." Since it was conditional I didn't comment, but I pretty much knew we'd go down the road all in good time.
We really got engaged in Mar '06 and married in May '08. Impressive how we could stretch 3wks into 6yrs, isn't it?
