So, this hurricane...
My friend is a weather nerd and has been tracking the news on various weather sites and what it all seems to boil down to is that we very well might get slammed. And if we don't, it might be NYC instead.
I'm going to do some shopping tomorrow to make sure we're well stocked. I'm not going into freak out mode, but I definitely want to be prepared - water, batteries, stuff that we can eat without having to apply heat.

I just said this to DH! We have NOTHING in the house. During one of the blizzards we had nothing and I about went crazy. I never want to be in that situation again LOL.
BTW - I'm following you on Pinterest now because I love all of the recipes you pinned
i think we'll be ok. i keep us stocked up on toilet paper and bottled water anyways (thanks sams club) and we have a gas stove which hubby assures me as long as the gas lines remain intact, we can use a match to light the gas if the power goes out.
i HAVE to go in to work saturday morning, so if it hits us, i just hope its later in the day.
Yeah, I kept up with the blizzards and was glad that I did. We're in pretty good shape, but bottled water is something I always mean to stock up on and never do, so now is as good a time as any. I want to take stock of other stuff to be sure, but I think with just a few more foodstuffs, we'll be fine. Oh, and maybe some more cat litter. It crazy how quickly we go through it.

And I need more matches and another long lighter thingy. And cookies. 'Cause I always want cookies when I'm stuck in bad weather.

I reeeeeally wish we had a generator. It's on my To Buy list for the future. It would make me feel so much better when we get severe weather.
The stuff we need is all minor and some of it, like AA batts, is stuff that's already on my regular grocery list, so it's not a big deal.
I do want to look into pet-friendly hotels in the area *just* in case. It's something I should know not just for this potential weather event, but for any other time.
My friend lives in the midwest and has a Jump Kit fully stocked in her closet for the multiple tornado warnings they get every year. For the first time, they had to use it this year and she said it was a life saver to have all of that stuff so readily accessible and ready to go when they needed to get out of their apartment building. I've been a little preoccupied with the idea of emergency preparedness since then.
I have no real thoughts on the hurricane. Its looking like we'll be on the softer side either way, but lots of rain.
Mostly, I just wanted to give a shout out to another Carbon Leaf fan!
They're coming to Annapolis in December!
ugh, I haven't been paying much attention to the forecast this week but this doesn't sound good. And dammit, I really wanted to take DS to the MD state fair this weekend, and now it looks like it might not happen.
I want to get a few things at the store but I bet it will be a mob scene. When the blizzards were coming we couldn't even get into the giant parking lot.
I bought my tickets weeks ago.
I'm one of the crazy ones who hasn't missed a show within a 90 minute drive of Baltimore in about 2 years (well, unless its a 2- or 3-night stand).
Did you catch them at Rams Head Live back in the spring? That was a great show! It also turned me onto Alternate Routes (who everyone said I should listen to), which lead to dancing in a thunderstorm for 3 1/2 songs at First Thursdays.
I've had mine for weeks as well, so don't feel badly!
I see them in Annapolis or Baltimore, but that's about it. I used to travel further but it's gotten harder since having a kid, sadly.
I had tickets to that show in the spring but broke my foot the week prior and couldn't walk, so I had to miss it! The last time I saw them would have been last December, I think, at Rams Head Annapolis, and prior to that, June 2010 at Rams Head Live.

FB says the storm shifted overnight again and is going to slam us. But it's always changing. I'm going just to be prepared. I need to go regardless. I miss the good ole days when Foot's Forecast had ONE blog page. I can't keep up with their 7 different pages now.
Weather channel last night said "there are several paths this storm could take, none of them good."
There are two projection models - one european and one american - and last night the european model had the hurricane hitting us at Ocean City (and this is a big hurricane so we would feel it up here) and the american model has it staying out to sea and hitting NY/NJ.
But from what i'm seeing online this morning it is more likely to hit OC but it's supposed to be a Category 2 by then if not weaker (the projections I'm seeing have it hit North carolina Saturday night/Sunday morning as a Category 2 and then weaken by the time it reaches us obviously.) that's the good thing - it appears to be getting weaker, not stronger. Hopefully if/when we get hit, its not as bad as they are projecting.
Part of the problem too is that we are supposed to get bad storms tonight as well (ahead of Irene) so thats not going to help the situation.
I'm worried about my parents - their back yard is very flat and even during very high tides the water comes up, I can see their entire yard flooding out and their yard isn't super big so it could reach the house.

We are going to their show at Rams Head Live in a few weeks. So excited!
Now that we live really close to Baltimore (we were in Havre de Grace, but now only about 20 minutes from downtown), I need to find more places to hear live music. There is a bar across the creek from us, and but is seems to be a biker bar with hair cover bands (cover hair band? bands that play hair band covers?). We can hear it, but its not enough to motivate us to go across the creek and in. I want to find Baltimore's Jammin Java.
By the way, reading this you all are freaking me out. *sigh* We have a house for sale in HdG that I need to go prepare, and the house we are living in. I was going to wait until Saturday to head up to the other house, but now I am thinking I'll do it on Friday. Not much we can do for it though other than get everything down from outside, lock up the shed, and hope the (large, old) trees hold. Luckily, its mostly oaks. I'd be more worried about pines and bradford pears. Our neighbor's lost a breadford pear onto/in front of our townhouse in Isabel.
Worst part: DH is working down at the inner harbor on a couple of projects that are busting tail to get done before the grand prix. So he has been putting in 60-hour weeks, is expected to work on Saturday, and there will be no way he can take off Monday to help with the cleanup. Blech. I've gotten out of the manual labor habit since I got married lol
Since I didn't get to the grocery store last weekend, I *really* need to go. Off to check the weather...

We have the same concerns, but no generator and no hoarder of a DH.
I will fill up the bathtub of the extra bathroom with water to use to flush the toilets if we lose power and I will start filling up the millions of water bottles we have in our house as well for drinking water I guess. Ugh.
The tree thing is flipping scary- our house is technically "over-engineered" and supposedly our beams can handle big trees falling on them, avalanches, etc. but still, I don't want one coming down.
I'm not a storm freaker-outer by a long shot - but my house only has gutters on the front, my front porch is held up by two temporary supports and there is a hole covered with plywood where my back door used to be.
I'm a little freaked.
I'm hoping they are going to get the gutters done today, so that'll be taken care of, but I'm not sure they can do it with the rain we've already got. This sucks. It'll particularly suck if we lose power and I can't even shopvac whatever water gets into the basement. Especially since the basement is where we sleep, and where 90% of the stuff we own is located.

We used to be pretty blase about all of the storm preparedness, but we now have a 4-5 stockpile of water, canned food, etc. There used to be formula and diapers too. We should probably put some clothes and blankets in there too.
DH has always been a survivalist freak, wanting to have a bunker in case the government collapses in on itself. Or something. I used to just shake my head or roll my eyes.
But now that we have a kid and two pets, I'm definitely more on-board with emergency preparedness, though my thought process leans toward extreme weather, not gov't collapse.
I'm going to get caught up on laundry, dishes, some minor cleaning, and go out to deposit checks and hit Target. Oh, and the library for books. If it's all in vain, no biggie - it's all stuff I need to do anyway. But if we end up having some nightmarish weather, I'll be glad it was done.
I hope everyone with tree concerns stays safe! We have a small tree in our front yard and a large wooded area behind us, but I think we're out of reach of the trees damaging our house if they fall. The fence would be at risk, and maybe the deck/stairs. That would suck, but it's not as big a concern to me as our roof.
I looooove Gaelic Storm. They're the only group I love more than Carbon Leaf. I'll be at their show on 9/11, too!

Waving from HdG! The poor promenade will probably be blown out again. We're "up the hill" (so not downtown HdG) that we don't have to be worried about actual flooding from the bay/river. Is your house for sale downtown?
We were living in Locust Point during Isabel. Tide Point completely flooded and I remember people kayaking down Light Street. I took a picture of a fish swimming on Light Street!
HdG? Abderdeen? Apparently I needed to hang out on the local more when I lived there lol I was actually closer to Aberdeen but in 21078 (not Bulle Rock, but same general area).
I've decided that I need to do something about my underreaction, and I will be going up tomorrow to batton down the hatches. Then I guess I'll take off on Monday and head back up to survey the damage (if any). Hopefully I'll be able to get to the BGE outtage map. That is my biggest concern flat, clay, sump pump.
My hurricane preparedness activities have included:
-Requesting a truckload of books from the library, all of which I hope will be ready for pick up on Saturday.
-Going to Wal*Mart for: batteries, a flashlight, candy bars, Rice Krispies Treats, individual bottles of water, gallon bottles of water (the last 3 in the store), granola bars, juice boxes, lighter, First Aid Kit, toilet paper, and more batteries.
-Depositing my last paycheck and withdrawing cash.
-Going to Giant for: ice cream and more water.
-Doing all of the dishes and all of the laundry.
-Trying to teach DD what a hurricane is while also not wanting to scare her.
-Giving DH a list of alcohol to purchase.
Still to do: buy butter ('cause if the power goes out, I'm probably gonna want to bake) and an NOAA weather radio, if I can find one.
