So what if anything are you doing to prepare for Irene?

1. Beer, check

2. Smokes, check

3. How much of your outside stuff will you secure/bring inside?  I guess we'll bungee cord our upstairs deck stuff to the heavy table and bring in the umbrella... full flower boxes should be heavy enough to be ok, don't you think?

4. Try not to park the car under a tree on Saturday?

5. We have a storm radio but not any emergency kit... we've got flashlights.

and...

Also what are your plans for Sunday?  Food and Scrabble I think for us.

And I am absolutely dreading going to the grocery store which I will have to do at some point between after work tonight and tomorrow evening. bleh.

Re: So what if anything are you doing to prepare for Irene?

  • We're going to the grocery store tonight, but only b/c we always do it on Friday nights. I'm scared it's going to be super busy, though!

We'll probably bring in some of our light patio furniture and grill (it's a really small charcoal one).

And, cross our fingers a tree doesn't fall on our house and our basement stays dry!

  • Well I generally try not to go to the store and stock up for storms since I don't want to catastrophize (I don't know if that's a real word... my boss uses it) BUT I think I'm ok since I have company coming over tonight and have to go anyway. Milk bread eggs it is.

I plan to make sure my car is parked somewhere other than the giant tree across the street.

I plan to hit up JoAnn Fabrics and look for an oil lamp or I'll be using up my PartyLite inventory to light my house in the event of a power outage, which is likely.. my power goes out a lot. God forbid I have to burn my candles and have conflicting scents!! Stick out tongue

  • We stopped at the supermarket last night and it wasn't that bad actually.  Although I'm truly annoyed that I forgot 2 things that I specifically went in there for.

We have flashlights, bottled water and radios.  We also have a shitton of baby stuff to put away and a crib to put together so there are some things to do.  Cards and trivial pursuit are our back ups.  I wish I could day load because that's clearly the best part of inclement weather, but alas I cannot.

  • We have umbrellas, and our Sunday plans will probably stay the same as any other Sunday.

We rent a 4th floor apt in the city so we have no responsibilities, weeee!

  • We went to the grocery store last night around 8 and it wasn't crazy.

We have a windup radio, windup flashlights and some camping laterns that I'll charge tonight that can run for about 8-12 hours.  Plus, I have a ton of candles I can burn for lighting.

Mr. D is going to secure things in the backyard and will pick stuff up off the basement floor as we are sure to get water.  As long as the power stays on, the sump pump will work.

Provided that our Hs are home, we can make up for the lack of current day-loading at the first snowstorm this winter :)

  • You all milk bread and eggs wouldn't be the smartest. well milk and eggs if power goes out.

I am going to check the back slab make sure nothing needs to come in. or tied down.

making sure all our cloth diapers are clean (we have a 4 day stock) plus we have some packs of 7th gen diapers that just exist at our house.

we have plently of flash lights

and we are going to the grocery store tomorrow, i'm thinking pbj/bread and some water.

should i really fill the bathtub with water for like flushing the toilet?

Unless you have a well system for your water or a septic system, you don't need to do this for your location in S. Philly. Even if the city declares that water is not safe for drinking, it is still safe for flushin.'

  • imagelaptopprancer:

    1. Beer, check

    2. Wine, check.  We also have some bottled water and the baby is breastfed so the beer and wine should both last a while.  There is also a decent supply of fancy irish whiskey so we may do a whiskey tasting.

    3. How much of your outside stuff will you secure/bring inside?  This may be the one time I am happy we don't have outdoor space

    4. Pray our underground garage isn't flooded.

    5. No radio, no flashlights, but I do have a 100 count bag of tealights and some yankee candles.  We also have buried power lines so I am hoping for the best.

Also what are your plans for Sunday?  Stock the freezer cooking day and boardgames for Saturday and Sunday.  Maybe do some much needed cleaning.

I am hitting the grocery store Saturday am (early) in hopes that all of the crazies are in their bunkers at that point.

bless you. i may need to pee during the hurricane!

  • I bought a case of Victory Festbier last night, so I'm set.

The beauty of currently residing at the ILs' house is that I don't have much to worry about. I'm sure FIL will be securing things outside, and MIL did a big grocery trip. I have my iPad charged up, and a few books to read if we lose power.

  • I also grabbed some disposable plates, cups and utensils.  If our power goes out we have no hot water so I won't be able to wash dishes.  I'm really hoping if the power goes out it's only for a few hours and not a few days :/

  • Again from BIL lol: a FW from the red cross.

Bring in anything that can be picked up by the wind (bicycles, lawn furniture, grills). Close windows and doors. Turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and keep them closed as much as possible so that food will last longer if the power goes out. Turn off propane tanks and unplug small appliances. Fill your car?s gas tank. Ensure that you have ample supply of batteries, bottled water, canned goods, and flashlights

I'm just worried about the rain. I just moved all of our basement furniture to the center (we tend to get water around the lower corners).

I went grocery shopping last night and just got juice, milk, some meat. I figured if our power goes out we will grill. I have some meat frozen so if we end up needing it we'll use it.

Another worry is going into labor LOL. I went into labor with DS#1 during that huge snow storm right before Christmas in 2009. (although it was right around my due date) But apparently big barometric changes may cause me to go into labor...

Really the only thing in there from the Red Cross that i haven't heard was setting the fridge to the highest setting right now.

  • We are going to bring our patio chairs in and are going to the grocery store this afternoon.  I think I am one of the people who need to stock up on some batteries and candles.  Not something I keep a lot of around the house.

I don't think we have a radio.  Do I need one?

Plenty of booze and if the power goes out and we can't open the fridges we got wine.

I just need to charge up the electronics and get ready to sit around.  DH is off this weekend, thank you jesus.

  • how long will the hurricane be overhead? i know if the eye comes overhead don't go the f' out, but is this like a couple of hours or a hour?

Overnight. Sustained for quite a few hours. Oh and for the French toast ingredients, we have a propane camping grill!

The eye of a hurricane can be very peaceful and sunny--it is a "hole" of no clouds and no precipitation.  The eye of the storm is expected to pass east of Cape May, meaning that the West side of the storm (which does not have as much power and destruction) is expected to hit the coast of DE and NJ.

Weather lesson: hurricanes that hit the Eastern US swirl in a counter-clockwise motion. On our coast, East side of a storm is what brings destruction and causes major $hit to happen. Once the storm hits land, it loses strength, but continues to swirl counter-clockwise. If those winds then move over water, it picks up strength again.

On the West coast, the hurricanes swirl in the same counter-clockwise motion, but the West side of the hurricane has more destruction.  In the Southern Hemisphere, the hurricanes swirl clockwise...and I don't have the brain power to figure out which side is crappier.

End of weather lesson.  God, I sound like Mister Wizard.

  • I have nothing in my house and will be going shopping tonight. Probably stocking up on bread, peanut butter, jelly, fluff, juice boxes, water, pampers, wipes, toilet paper, candles and batteries.

I'm going to bring my work laptop home today and charge it up, as well as make sure our cells are all charged up.

DH has a party Saturday night and a fantasy football draft that he swears he is going to on Sunday.

I'm also nervous about the whole "going into labor" thing. My babies are very impatient. Chase decided to come 4 weeks early during the middle of the snow storm in Feb. 2008. It took us 2 hours to get to the hospital 20 minutes away. Lord I hope this kid stays in.

  • So this is possibly the worst weekend ever to go camping, huh?  We are cancelling, fear not!  It was near impossible to find a camping lantern anywhere...

We have water, flashlights, some yankee candles, and a bunch of camping food, along with a newly purchased tailgating grill.  I need to go out and get some batteries, more pillar candles and see if we have a radio somewhere.  I also will spend the day securing our backyard items and trying to figure out how to cover up our leaky skylight with a tarp or something.  Oh, and moving stuff away from the part of the basement that gets water.  This is not exactly how I wanted to spend my last day of summer vacation.

We had a tree guy come on Wednesday to look at a few trees that concerned us.  He assured us that all of our trees are fine, strong, not going anywhere.  So help me God if one of those trees ends up in our house.

We have plenty of booze, games, and books to keep us occupied.

Question for you all - would you park a car in the garage?  I'm thinking it might be smart, but then again we have a power garage door opener.  We lose power - our car is stuck in there (unless there is a way to manually pull it open???)...hmmm.  I will definitely need my own car to get to work on Monday...

  • Got beer and filled up my gas tank yesterday

Make sure Ipad and phones are charged

We dont have a portable radio

Will probably bring in the outdoor furniture

Pray that the many evergreens that surround my house do not fall on the cars/house

Make sure the three cat crates are handy in case evergreens do fall on the house-no one will try to escape.

KYW described the impending rain as like, being under a fully turned on faucett for 12-16 hours.  The storm is BIG.  5-10" of rain overnight.  So like the soaker of two Sundays ago, but longer.

  • I went to Wegmans this morning and they were out of so many things I went for. I was trying to get some school grocery shopping done since the beginning of the school year is so hectic. They had absolutely no water!

I stocked up on a few canned goods.

I will bring in the small patio set and grill we have.

I have a bag with flashlights and candles packed just in case.

I am going to pick up wine and get some cash out.

I really hope we don't lose power because I have plans to make brownie cookies and attempt my Granny's chili sauce.

  • I have the LOLs at all of the Yankee Candles that everyone has.  All your houses are gonna stiiiiiiiink.  (mine included as I also have several different flavors)

Unscented candles would make a buttload during hurricane times!

  • just got back from food shoping, we had nothing in the house since we were supposed to be at the shore for five days. I got things we can grill- ground meat for burgers, steaks, zucchini-, corn-since DH swears he will be out there grilling in a poncho if the power goes out. im making a roast beef tomorrow morning along with some cupcakes and homemade ice cream. really, just because

wine is stocked, always is, and opener is easily accessible in case no lights.  im going to check for a flashlight, im sure we have one somewhere and we also have plenty of yankee candles.

also going to pick up some dry ice tomorrow to keep stuff cold in a cooler.
