Some Friday randoms

I can't spend my whole day on here (lots of reading for next week!), but I wanted to share this.

I won my first FB fight last night.  It was in regards to me saying "Dislike" when someone posted how awesome it is that MI passed the 48 month limit on welfare and he wishes Ohio (his own state would do the same).  A girl who actually works for the state in welfare program, posted that I'm not educated enough on the topic and it really is a good thing and will prevent a lot of abuse in the system.  I responded with not necessarily the best arguments, but she posted "I don't agree, but can always agree to disagree."  IMO, the first person who says "agree to disagree" loses.  Yay!

Re: Some Friday randoms

  • Nice win, Diana!

I'm glad it's Friday.  My parents are in town again.  They've been visiting a lot lately.  That's okay, though.  I enjoy their company.  They're off to Chicago today though, and they'll be back tomorrow night.  They love that I live right on the road to my brother's place, so that they can drive in one direct and see us both.

  • I totally forgot to complain to you guys about this!  But...BIL is coming for a visit in September.  Ok, fine.  So we asked him for the date so we can make some plans.  He says September 9th...through the 27th!  WTF.

    2 and a half weeks.

    Whoa... that's not cool.

  • Hey, guys, want to help me spend some money?

I received $135 for my birthday.  Here are my three ideas of how to spend it:

    1) Put it toward a new bike.  It won't cover the whole cost, but it would cover a big chunk.  My current bike should really be replaced -- it's 16 years old and the style no longer really works for me.  But I've been having a hard time dropping the money on a new bike because I don't ride that much.

    2) Buy new clothes.  I would buy a pair of hiking pants for Hawaii (and elsewhere).  We're going to be hiking at Volcanoes National Park where you're supposed to wear long pants, but I'd rather not wear jeans.  It would be nice to have a nice pair of hiking pants, but again, they wouldn't get a ton of use.  Obviously $135 isn't needed for one pair of pants, so I could add to my fall wardrobe with other new items too.

    3) Buy a sweet new pair of boots for fall.  I've kind of been wanting a pair of really nice riding boots, but I can't typically legitimize spending that much on boots.  But, if it were birthday money, than I could consider it a special treat.

  • Would you ride more if you bought a new bike?  I love going for bike rides.

  • D&M...for real!?  Yikes!  Where does he live?

Kasa...I vote for the bike, only because I really want a new one myself...so I am a bit biased.

Probably a little more.  I don't think I'll ever be a hard-core biker though.  At least not until perhaps 2013 when I have part of my life back.

  • I really want to see the movie "The Help"...has anyone seen it?  Did it follow the book?

    Mississippi, I think.

I can hardly handle him for a long weekend.

    Hold me.

Check out sierra trading post  . . I got a great deal on some hiking clothes for my Uganda trip.

I'm trying to decide what I want to can tomorrow. DH will be brewing beer so I hope to do some canning. Not sure if I want to do the tomato thing yet- might just stick with fruit stuff.

  • Molly--two and a half weeks is way too long for a houseguest.

Kasa--I would probably get the hiking pants and use the remaining money to put towards the boots.  That way you'll get two of the three items on your "wish list."

What does your husband think about that? Can you tell BIL you only have space/availability for one week? I mean, it is your house. You can put your foot down.

  • I just took Noah into the bathroom with me while I brushed my teeth.  He proceeded to open the vanity drawer, take out a tampon and suck on it.  He looked up at me and smiled huge...where is my camera when I need it!  haha

Nope, it's acknowledging the fact that you two have differing opinions and aren't going to budge. Wink

Well, I could tell him we only have space for him for a week, but he will know that's a lie.  I live in a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom 2800 sq ft house with one other adult and a toddler.  I'm not going to lie and cause issues between us.  I'm just going to suck it up.  Thankfully because of the size of the house, I will hardly see him and there will be no overlapping of personal space.

I just don't understand how he could buy plane tickets before asking us if the dates were ok, or how he could possibly think that 2.5 weeks is normal or ok for a vacation when you are staying at someone else's house.

H is annoyed, and told his brother that he has to work for 1.5 weeks of his stay and warned him that we won't be availble to cater to him during that time.  H took 1 week off to spend time with him.

I'm sure it will be fine.  I'm just really annoyed that he thinks any of this is ok.

Now I see how you've backed me into a corner here, but I can't let this go.

While I completely understand where you're coming from and see the truth there, being the first one to ask the argument to stop is like giving up.

My objective in the initial argument was not necessarily to change her mind; it's almost impossible to get someone to change their ideology and usually not the point.  My objective was to justify my "dislike" comment and expose alternative solutions.  When she agreed to disagree, it implies that while she doesn't agree with my opinion, she concedes that my opinion is justified.  Therefore, I win.

Does saying "agree to disagree" = asking the argument to stop? I say no. Again, it's acknowledging an impasse.

This also means you can't assume that she concedes your opinion is justified. It may just mean that she doesn't have the time/interest/etc. to continue the argument at that time. OR it could mean that she thinks you're full of $hit but knows you'll never consider her position.

(You know I'm arguing this with you for fun, right? Gotta break you into lawyering and all that... Geeked )

Haha... I didn't exactly mean that as a compliment (no offense).  Stick out tongue  But, yeah.

And on that note, I'm staying away from here until the debate about the finer points of what constitutes winning an arguement concludes.  I come to this board to get away from conversations like that!

I suppose this board isn't just about me, though.  So carry on.
