Re: suze orman

  • no, no and no. lol

I've heard about her, but she's a *little* irritating.  We won't think about all that until we both have real jobs, in the mean time neither of us will be getting 'laid off' (pretty much guaranteed income, unless I guess one of us became quadriplegic and then there's a lot of other things I would be worried about first) so I don't think we fit the typical savings plan - she would have a heart attack.

  • no, yes and yes.

    I can't stand her. I think she's super irritating.

  • do you guys watch her??
No.  We don't have tv, but even if we did, we wouldn't.

do you and H have 8mo worth of emergency savings?
No.  We had about 6mo worth, but not anymore.

    do you have retirement plans?
    Yes, both of us do.

    Nope

do you and H have 8mo worth of emergency savings?

     No, probably about 2-3 months

    do you have retirement plans?

No, we have house buying plans, then hopefully we can start planning for babies and retirement.

My parents never talk about money, so I felt totally clueless when I was on my own.

It wasn't until H and I got together and he had SL and wasn't saving enough for retirement that I had to learn about it on my own.

Also, I have a few friends that are really in to investing and I'll talk to them about it too, but most of it goes over my head.

  • imagesarack:

another question: where did you guys learn about money???

i don't know...i think i always *knew*, but didn't necessarily follow the ideal plan. just too young and naive then.  when i told h i was 20k in credit card debt, he freaked out, and made me make a plan to pay it off....and i did. and i've been debt free (other than mortgage) since 2006. h pushed me in the right direction and made me follow a plan, rather than thinking i'd deal with it later.

  • No Suze Orman, but we actually just started reading Smart Couples Finish Rish over the weekend. We both checked out a copy from the library and are reading it together. So far it's pretty good. I am excited about getting our finances in order because like you, we are terrible at saving. We have no e-fund, no savings, no retirement. We are horrible with money right now.....and we have lotsssss of debt.

  • I learned about money the hard way - when I was stuck with 50K in debt from my divorce. Much of the debt I had no idea about.

I had to scrape by and do what I could to stay above water, which included working 3 jobs at one point in time.

When DH and I got together, he helped me set up a budget and a plan to get out of debt. Ever since then, we've just talked about it. We didn't semi-merge finances until we were married and we decided we wouldn't get married until all that debt was gone.

  • H & I both have a little CC debt.. but H has wayyy more. I paid off a bunch of the little ones, like macy's, best buy, that sort of thing, but we still have some more that he has. figuring out a payment plan is hard to stick to! it always seems like such a good idea until the next thing comes along and i wanna use my money for that instead of paying more on his CC.

I think my problem is I'm bad at saying "i can't afford that" because in my head, i can, because i don't have that much debt and i make a decent amount of money... but then i have to remember what's H's is mine... so that means I need to help pay his debt off too.

suze orman says i should live way below my means.. and i think i'm seriously gonna try this. i really would love to see how it would feel to have 8mo saved in an emergency fund. We will need to save atleast 3mo for when we have a baby...

anyway, she just got me thinking. she is annoying but i think she is right about a lot of stuff. and mostly just made me feel guilty that i keep making plans and then i don't stick to them longer than a month or two.

i need to keep in mind that i have everything i need... and i don't need everything i want.

  • Do you and DH pay things together?

Do you have a list of all your debts? with $ amounts, interest rates, etc.?

I find it really helpful to see it all together, it makes things seem more real.

It was also gratifying to me when I would see I was close to paying something off.

this. since you guys are working together to pay off debt..you should collaborate and work on higher interest rates first.  if you can, do some balance transfers off high interest store cards (best buy, etc) onto a generic visa or something that has a lower rate.

  • No.

Not quite. We're almost there, though.

Ha, no. That's a ways off. We're working on a house first (after H is done with school), then babies, then a retirement plan. So retirement plans are at least 10 to 15 years down the road.

really? not even a 401K? (not meaning to sound snarky at all, just curious) i mean, i don't have a ton of money saved, but don't most work places offer 401k? someone else said they don't have one either.. did this not include a 401K?

  • Another thing that really helped me save is I opened a separate ING orange savings account (separate from our day to day savings/checking) and I have an auto deposit set up for the ING account.

Once a week ING pulls money from our regular checking and I have it set up in my bill payment calendar as a "bill", so since I never really see the money I don't end up missing it.

  • No, no, and yes.

We're working on saving, and paying down high interest credit cards. I really like her book Young, Fabulous, and Broke. Sheds a lot of light on how young people need to handle their money.

Yep, it's a fully online bank.

You have to treat this as long term savings though. I have a small amount in our savings that I can get to in a true emergency, but most of our e fund sits here. It takes about 2 days for the funds to come out of ING and into your regular bank account.

Let me know if you want a referral. I think we both get $25 or something like that if you open an account and make a deposit.

i agree completely with uw.... h and i treat our savings account like a bill. it's something you just *have* to pay into every so often ( we do every two weeks). we don't set up an auto payment, but we put* all* the extra money in there after we pay our regular bills.

you're so smart. hopefully i'll become smart because you are teaching me about money management. lol. i seriously feel dumb when it comes to this. the idea of saving money and budgeting is simple.. but the doing is the part that i suck at.

H is in school right now. Once he's out and looking at jobs, we'll consider a 401K, but when I answered, I wasn't counting that...silly me!

Edit: We also use ING for savings. It's our "house money" savings account right now. Our every day savings account is where our emergency money is. ING auto drafts approx. half of each of our paychecks (well, when we're both getting paychecks)...and we have an agreement that no one touches that money.

We also don't have any debt besides school debt and that's minimal. I have a little over $2K and H has taken about that these last two years.
