Stupid question for the Southern girls

Is it a thing in the South to dress up for football games? I keep seeing all these cutesy sundresses and stuff pinned on pinterest with comments like "perfect football outfit!" and they all seem to be from Southern areas.

Around here, you do jerseys for the like the first 3 weeks of football season and then it's so freaking cold everyone's bundled up. I can't imagine getting dressed up to go!

Re: Stupid question for the Southern girls

  • I don't know where in the South this happens but I do see some occasional UT dresses at football games.  My game ware outfit is either jeans/shorts and a t-shirt that supports the team.  It's too hot down here for jerseys.

  • It was a thing at UF especially for the sorority girls, they always seemed to look like Barbie all dressed up in their dresses and accessories. I was never very stylish or in a sorority, so I always just wore a school t shirt and shorts, the most I would do is tie a ribbon around my ponytail.

  • Yes! I know at both Alabama and Auburn games a lot of college students try to find cute dresses. The frat boys have to wear their suits too. I have even got cute dresses to wear to games. Our game Sat is at 11:30 it is going to be 95 or hotter. So, having a cute tank dress or strapless dress helps in the heat. If I go now, I really don't care about dressing up, but when I was younger I always bought cute tops, skirts or dresses to wear.

  • I've seen both styles of dress. If you read GRITS (Girls Raised In The South) ther's a section or paragraph or something in there that says a good Southern girl should always dress up when leaving the house... Lol...

  • I think football being a religion down here for most schools means that games are the social event of the week and you can't be seen in less than your perfect best.  At Murray, dresses aren't really popular for games other than Homecoming (then you're dressed to the nines, even if you're walking through a mud pit in Tent City), but sorority ladies will generally wear their blue and gold in fashionable ways, including heels, sweaters, scarves, off the shoulder tops, etc.

But it's definitely something I have never and will never do.  I'm not there to impress people, I'm there to cuss at refs and mock other players.

  • The sorority girls at LSU had to dress up for football games. Non sorority people don't.
