I see some board newbies. Let's have a poll.

In the last few days there have been a bunch of new names replying to posts.  Welcome to the board, y'all!  Come out and play more often; the regulars are a good group and we welcome more posters.

Let's do a little get-to-know you poll.

What town do you live in (if you want to share)?

Have you always lived in MA?  If not, where else have you lived?

What kind of work do you do?

What do you like to do in your free time?

Name one restaurant you recently tried that you'd recommend.  Or, name an old favorite--any price point, any cuisine, anything you want.

If you could either travel the world all expenses paid for a whole year (and would have a job when you came home and all that jazz) or magically drop 10 pounds that you'd never gain back, which would you choose?

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

Re: I see some board newbies. Let's have a poll.

  • What town do you live in (if you want to share)? I'm in Waltham.

Have you always lived in MA?  If not, where else have you lived? I lived in the SF Bay Area for several years, though I'm Boston-born and bred.

What kind of work do you do? I'm a finance/business development professional.

What do you like to do in your free time?
Play volleyball, rock climb (though I don't get to do that much anymore), crochet, knit, and read.

Name one restaurant you recently tried that you'd recommend.  Or, name an old favorite--any price point, any cuisine, anything you want.
I went to a vegan restaurant this weekend that served the most amazing portobello mushroom and caramelized onion sandwich I've ever had.  I'm salivating just thinking of it now and the friends we were with ordered one for the road after trying a bit of mine.  The place is called True Bistro in Somerville.  DH's banana, strawberry, "Nutella" crepe was also very good.

If you could either travel the world all expenses paid for a whole year (and would have a job when you came home and all that jazz) or magically drop 10 pounds that you'd never gain back, which would you choose?  This one is really hard for me as two of my favorite activities in the world are traveling and eating.  I guess I would have to go with the weight loss because then I could eat whatever I want for the rest of my life without worrying Smile  But, man, luxury travel without a care in the world for a whole year would be realllllllly nice.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I always love re-reading the old timers polls!!
  • What town do you live in (if you want to share)?  Currently I am in Philadelphia, but we just signed a lease for an apartment in Worcester.  DH is moving there on Sunday and I am going to be moving there as soon as I get a job.  Once our house sells, we are going to buy, but no idea where yet (definitely a suburb).  I am always open for suggetions.

Have you always lived in MA?  If not, where else have you lived?  I grew up in New Jersey in a town called Ventnor a block from the beach.  We moved to the Philadelphia area when I was a freshman in high school and have lived there until now.

What kind of work do you do?  I currently work in the social work field with children with emotional and behavioral needs.  I recently interviewed for a job in Acton, MA in non-profit.  I am hoping to hear back from them this week.

What do you like to do in your free time?  Shopping, reading, running, I do agility training with my dog, Doug, hanging out with friends/family, drinking

Name one restaurant you recently tried that you'd recommend.  Or, name an old favorite--any price point, any cuisine, anything you want.  I don't know any in the area yet.  If you need Philly recommendations, I am your girl though.

If you could either travel the world all expenses paid for a whole year (and would have a job when you came home and all that jazz) or magically drop 10 pounds that you'd never gain back, which would you choose?  The logical part of me says the traveling, but never having to worry about 10 pounds again, would be awesome.  I guess the traveling would win out in the long run because that is something that I could never do on my own.  Losing 10 pounds I could.

  • What town do you live in (if you want to share)? I live near the 496/Rt.2 inter change.

Have you always lived in MA? If not, where else have you lived? Yes, except for a term abroad in Melbourne, Australia during college.

What kind of work do you do? I am a research biologist currently working as a lab manager/research technician for a cancer research lab at a local university.

What do you like to do in your free time?
Um, watch tv? I like being outside when the weather is nice, walking/hiking, kayaking, etc. I love puzzles. I like reading when I'm in the mood.

Name one restaurant you recently tried that you'd recommend.  Or, name an old favorite--any price point, any cuisine, anything you want.
We went to a restaurant called Allora in Marlborough for Valentine's Day this year and really enjoyed it. The ricotta cheese in my raviolis was so fresh. And the mascarpone in the tiramisu was so amazing, and I don't normally like tiramisu but loved theirs.

If you could either travel the world all expenses paid for a whole year (and would have a job when you came home and all that jazz) or magically drop 10 pounds that you'd never gain back, which would you choose? Travel, hands down. Way more costly. While I love to eat, I'm not a foody by any means. Plus if I didn't have to worry about weight I don't think I'd exercise and I wouldn't be very healthy. So having to watch weight keeps me in check health-wise.

Definitely travel the world for a year!  I can't imagine anyone choosing the latter.

I LOLed at this as I'm the only one who has chosen the latter so far :)  It's because I could stand to lose just about 10 pounds that have been hanging out on my body for years now (you didn't think that number was random, did you? :)).  If I were to never gain that 10 pounds back, that means I could eat anything and everything for the rest of my life without worrying, and you all know how much I love to eat!  Plus, I plan on seeing a great deal of the world anyway, though admittedly on my own dime.

And, seriously, go try True Bistro if you haven't already, SCM. I didn't steer you wrong with No. 9 Park's prune-stuffed gnocchi, right?  Wait, was that you or am I confused now?

And finally, are you back from your big trip?   I can't remember when you were going.  If so, trip report, please!

And, seriously, go try True Bistro if you haven't already, SCM. I didn't steer you wrong with No. 9 Park's prune-stuffed gnocchi, right?  Wait, was that you or am I confused now? You're confused Smile  I haven't tried TB yet (I'm a total carnivore so I'm not exactly drawn to vegan restaurants), but I've heard from many people its fantastic so I'll give it a try sometime soon.

And finally, are you back from your big trip?   I can't remember when you were going.  If so, trip report, please! Yes, we got back on Saturday night (on one of the only flights to the East Coast that wasn't cancelled, thankfully!).  Trip was AMAZING.  I had a fantastic time with my friends in Amsterdam and Den Haag and then DH and I had a great time just the 2 of us in London.  I absolutely looooved London and would move there in a heartbeat if I could score a transfer to our office there, but that's seriously doubtful.  So bummed its all over Sad

Have you always lived in MA?  If not, where else have you lived? I lived in Maine for a while as a kid. Went to high school and college in MA, though.

What kind of work do you do? SAHM

What do you like to do in your free time?
    Read, knit and sew.

Name one restaurant you recently tried that you'd recommend.  Or, name an old favorite--any price point, any cuisine, anything you want.
Last week I went to Zebra's in Medfield because it came highly recommended. I got the lobster roll and it was just ok. The appetizer we got, some kind of pulled pork and guacamole dish, was fabulous. My favorite restaurant is Basil in Medfield. Their haddock filet is literally TDF. My favorite Mexican is Rancho Chico in Plainville (you can't go without getting the queso dip, and my favorite entree is the mole burrito). Fine dining, I love Saraceno's in the North End, but local to me, Davio's in Foxboro is pretty good. Favorite app: cheesesteak egg rolls; favorite entree- swordfish. Oh, and my favorite sushi is Bamboo in Dedham.

What do you like to do in your free time? Shopping, try new restaurants, hang out with friends, dancing!!!, or just chill out....all usually with my DH.

Name one restaurant you recently tried that you'd recommend. Or, name an old favorite--any price point, any cuisine, anything you want.  I love trying new places....The best I've had most recently was the Red Rock Grill in Upton...they have a yummy appetizer (which I crave, and now want it), the Potato Hay Stack with Rosemary Sea salt, which they also put some kind of Aioli (I think) over it.  We've gone twice and always end up ordering from the specials menu.  All yummy so far, a little $$ for the area, but worth it.

If you could either travel the world all expenses paid for a whole year (and would have a job when you came home and all that jazz) or magically drop 10 pounds that you'd never gain back, which would you choose? That is a tough one for me, I LOVE food, and 10lbs isn't all I want to lose, but would be enough to make me happy.  But I also LOVE to travel, and have so many places I would love to see, and could never afford to do, so I would also have to pick Travel :)

A few weeks ago on a recent trip to Arlington we ate at Za.  The beet salad was incredible!   If you could either travel the world all expenses paid for a whole year (and would have a job when you came home and all that jazz) or magically drop 10 pounds that you'd never gain back, which would you choose?  I'd prefer to go live in a cabin on a lake for a year and do nothing but read and hike (and have a job, etc. when I come back).  But if it's a choice between these two I'd say travel!

Have you always lived in MA?  If not, where else have you lived?

Oh, boy.  I've lived in Boston, Somerville, CT, MO, IN, OH, MI, IL, NY, FL, VA, Canada, Aruba.  I probably forgot something  in there.

Wow!  What's the story?  And what's it like living in Aruba?  Did you get bored?

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Due to my dad's job we relocated often (he was a mechanical engineer who managed construction installations for his company.  Once the installation was complete it was on to the next place!)  I spent 18 months in Aruba as a child.  I have fond memories, except that Aruba was my first impression of a beach (so I thought all beaches looked liked that).  Suffice it to say not many other beaches have lived up to those expectations! ;-)

I didn't think that I'd be living a nomadic lifestyle as an adult, but my husband & I have been married for 11 years and when we move back up to Boston it will be our 3rd move for his job (same company, just more transfers than we ever dreamed.)

  • Hi ladies!  I used the nest a very long time ago (OK 5 years).  I have a 9 month old son and I pop on here every once in awhile to snoop.  Guess it's time I say hi!

What town do you live in (if you want to share)?  Metrowest (sorry, it's generic)

Have you always lived in MA?  If not, where else have you lived?  Yes, I am a lifer here.

What kind of work do you do? I am used to work in healthcare but now I am at home with my son.  It's the best 'job' I have ever had!

What do you like to do in your free time?
Travel, go for long walks with my dog, spend time with my husband exploring the area, etc.

Name one restaurant you recently tried that you'd recommend.  Or, name an old favorite--any price point, any cuisine, anything you want.
My favorite in the city is Sorellina.  For restaurants in the metrowest, I like Maxwells in Natick and Il Capriccio in Waltham.

If you could either travel the world all expenses paid for a whole year (and would have a job when you came home and all that jazz) or magically drop 10 pounds that you'd never gain back, which would you choose?  No question, travel!  The experience is way more important than 10 lbs!

  • PS-  I changed my account today to get a new screen name.  The wedding one was just silly to keep!
