more wedding registry advice
in addition to something personal, I was going to get something off the registry. She is registered for a cupcake pan with a lid, but I know there is an even better one at C&B that is a cupcake pan and has a second tier for carrying for only $5 more... should I get the other one (with a gift receipt)? They only registered at BB&B, so this is probably all they had.
PS this pan is pretty cool!

I wouldn't, but I am afraid to stray from registries.
Oh, and I was meaning to tell you that I ordered a door mat from that place that Jenn linked you to. It should be here next week. I'll let you know if it's a good mat.
cool thanks!

i'm not, if there's a gift receipt at a store that they could use a credit for.

But what if C&B isn't their style? Or there's nothing there they want?
ya, I can't imagine this being a bad gift because it's a) better than what they registered for IMO (is it possible to NOT want a second tier of cupcakes?! lol) and b) it's to a big reputable store where they could get something else
but that said, maybe they would think I was a bad person? I want them to know I did look at the registry and didn't just ignore it and pick something random!
Planning Bio
Married Bio
well you would know if the store fits your friends style.
i wouldn't be afraid for this particular product because 1) it's very close to identical to the one they registered for. 2) it's better
.

I don't think it's a bad gift at all! I totally see your logic behind getting the c&b one, but there might be a very specific reason that they want this particular one.
Jenn's right though, you know your friend best and if you think they'd want a c&b credit (assuming they don't want the substituted carrier) then I'd get the c&b one.
also, they are only registered at BB&B - so it's not like they had the 'opportunity' to register for something similar anywhere else. That said, I know they did this (and made the registry small) because they want money towards their HM (I had to search on Wedding Channel to find where they were registered and they are also 'registered' for gift cards, plus she kind of mentioned it). However, we just aren't rolling in cash and I like giving gifts better, plus they did register so I feel like it's fair game.
ETA: all that was to say, I know why they didn't register at multiple places, one of which may have been C&B if they had, but I'd rather give a gift.

FWIW, h and i registered, even though we didn't want gifts. chinese culture is to give cash..but we didn't want to ask our friends for cash, and we also didn't want to risk getting a bunch of "odds and ends" gifts to random stores...so we registered at macy's where we figured we could return it and get something else not necessarily wedding related that we may want.

oh I totally know that's what they're doing - and I think they could probably find something at C&B. I'm glad Korean culture is into giving cash too
But all my 'white' friends (lol racism) that I've grown up with are gift-giving people and that's just what I'm comfortable with. Even if I had a lot of money, I'd still like to give a gift and 'worst' case consider it a giant gift card
ETA: I also happen to know where she works and that they are very into baking and bringing things to work, so I think she would actually use this

*raises hand*
This Asian hates giving cash and only gives presents... or a gift card if there are no other options.
LOL
for the record, I was making a generalization about white people and not about asian people :P
But seriously, for our wedding, there would be unmarked envelopes, NO CARD and a huge check. I mean, I'm not looking a gift-horse in the mouth, but it's just so weird to me. I actually enjoy sentimental things and my favorite wedding presents were things off our registry (one friend brought back a wedding plate from Turkey).

even though my culture is to give cash..h and i both still feel awkward to give cash...even to our chinese friends. we have 4 chinese weddings this year, and we bought a gift for all of them.....even the couple that requested cash......more like *especially* the couple that requested cash, we sent a gift.

Did it come in a red envelope? That's the "card." (Generalization alert) Asian's aren't mushy and don't express emotions like that to each other. I would be more surprised to get a card from an Asian person.
you and me hunnie. twinsies.

my favorite wedding gift is a giant glass chicken......that had no sentiment behind it. i just find it hilarious that someone would think i enjoy such a thing.....and i do. LOL...

no, no red envelopes - maybe that's just a Chinese thing? or I guess even better is that some had an unsigned card, LOL like, they tried, right?

Ah yes, now that you mention it I was talking to a Korean friend and she said they don't do red envelopes.
Vietnamese people do the red envelope thing too.
i'm pretty sure it's just chinese and vietnamese..i know japanese and korean don't do it (traditionally)
and double agree- i'd be surprised to get an actual "card" from a moms-generation asian person.

Then how come I got red envelopes with Hello Kitty wearing a kimono for last Chinese New Years then?
Is Sanrio getting their Asians mixed up?
we all look alike.
i'm not sure why hello kitty/saniro does it. i thought it was just the countries that follow lunar calendar......i know that my japanese friend said they don't do it, but a few aunts/uncles might give them out every once in a while, just not regularly.

in all serious-ness..."people" (white people) say, that "all asians look alike"....but come on...do white people *not* look alike? can you tell the difference between an english, german, french, etc person?

(first, I hope people know I was joking about that)
well I never say all asians look alike, I seriously don't think that's true. Like really, I don't. I also could probably sometimes tell the difference between europeans, but that's not all the time. In general I don't understand the sentiment that all people of anything would look alike at all.
Planning Bio
Married Bio
yes, definitely. we're just discussing
really? you can tell the difference between different european groups?
my reasoning for saying so is because i think the "average" white person wouldn't be able to tell if someone was chinese, japanese, korean, etc....just like the "average" asian person wouldn't be able to tell the difference between french, german, norweigian......(i think i can pick out italian, but that's about it!)

My mom actually noticed it when I first moved out here and we were sitting in a church trying it out. She leaned into me and went: The white people here look strange. They're different than the ones back home.
I think the area we live in in Kentucky is predominately populated by people who trace back to Germany and England. And here tends to be very Scandanavian. She said people's noses and jaw lines are very different here.
