Chemical Pregnancy

This past weekend at the mall when Jenny asked while looking at Carter's "Does anyone have any news to share?"  I bit my tongue.

Two weeks before I went to the doctor to have the "so we are going to really start trying"  talk and get things checked out since my period had been MIA (but ironically showed up 2 weeks before this appointment.)

To my complete surprise, I got a call a week later and was told I was pregnant.

I was shocked.  Excited.  Happy.  And well in total disbelief.  I was out of town for a meeting and got the call from the doctor minutes before a big presentation.  I was a little flustered to say the least.  I called Dave after work and well, he was as shocked as me, but we were ready to start our family!

I stayed up all night - even going to buy a POAS test at 3 am to see for myself.  Low and behold - 2 solid red lines.  I was pregnant.

I was slightly spotting though which the doctor said was normal. I made a followup appointment in October... and then the waiting game began.

I didn't have to wait too long though as last night I started bleeding full blown period.

I'm pretty bummed, but better now than weeks into this.  And it obviously wasn't meant to be.

The good news is my period is back on a normal cycle.

So we'll try again.

Has anyone else experienced this?  Can we talk about it?

Re: Chemical Pregnancy

  • I don't have any experience with this (that I know of) but I wonder if it is not more common than we think, we just don't find out we were pregnant?  I'm sorry your emotions were toyed with like that, that is a total bummer, ugh.  What a roller coaster.  BUT on the BRIGHT side, sounds like you CAN get PG and that is super good news!!  Keep trying!  Baby Dubs needs some more friends with cool ass moms :)  Hugs.

Yes, I think this is exactly the case from what I'm reading.

If the doctor wouldn't have drawn blood, I would have never POAS and would have just thought the spotting was from my cra-cra period and gone on with life.

And here I thought Baby Dubs would have a play buddy....

    We are forging ahead though.

  • I'm sorry. I totally understand the surprise, excitement, let down & every other emotion that comes in between. I hope for your sake, your not on the same roller coaster ride as me. I'm ready to get off.
According to my Dr. 1 in 4 women have a reported m/c., including chemical ones. Like Sara said, she believes it is far more common since some women never knew they were pg or never went to a Dr.

  • I'm sorry to hear what you went through.  What a roller coaster of emotions!  Hopefully now that your period is back to being regular you will have good news very soon.  Wishing you well!
  • I'm really sorry to hear that, C. It's good news that your period is normal and that you are forging onward.

  • Pregnancy is a huge waiting game... how did you ladies do it?

I didn't even make it 4 weeks and was up countless night worrying if this is really happening.

  • I'm so sorry that you have had to go through this.  TTC really sucks.  I hope that it happens quickly for you now that your cycles are back on track.  I know A LOT of people who got pregnant right after a chemical pregnancy or m/c.  (((hugs)))

I was worried to death at first.  But then I realized that I couldn't control it, other than taking care of myself.  And then the exhaustion set in, and I didn't want to do anything but sleep!

  • I'm so sorry.

I never shared this on the board but I had two chemical pregnancies around the end of last year/start of this year. I know exactly what you are talking about - we were so excited, so ready, so happy, and then it just sort of went away, essentially.

I said all the same stuff you're saying - it obviously wasn't meant to be, better it happened early than weeks into the pregnancy, etc. But I know it still hurts.

After the second one my husband and I took a break from TTC for 6 months to clear our heads and get a better perspective. Now, you see where we are. :) Of course, I still constantly worry that something will go wrong. It sucks.

If you want or need someone to talk to, feel free to PM or email me (alawyerswife at gmail dot com). So sorry you're going through this!

    Thinking of you.

  • C, I know it's easier said than done... But you just have to relax and have fun with it. Don't worry about getting pregnant - let your body do what it is supposed to do. The more you worry, the more sleepless nights you have, the less your chances could be. I had to pound this into a very good friend of mine's head about a year ago. She was in tears because they had been trying for six months with no luck. I seriously had to grab her and tell her that it was going to be fine, and she just needed to relax. She is at week 38.

I am a firm believer in the idea of the less you stress about it, the more your body will be able to do what nature intended it to do. <3 Everything will work out.

  • I am sorry you had to go through this. I was also thinking while reading your opening post how if you hadn't gone to the doctor, you wouldn't realized you were pregnant in the first place. I read a statistic that in someting like 3 out of 5 early miscarriages, the women never knows she's pregnant. I'm fairly certain I had a loss between my two viable pregnancies, but I can't sure because I hadn't tested yet. I'm so sorry for your emotional roller coaster ride here, and wish you the best in TTC.

  • So sorry to hear this. It's a sucky rollercoaster for sure :-(

II have had two chemical pgs.  However, I also have endo stage IV & MTHFR and have to use IVF.  I am currently pregnant from an FET after my two chemicals and I started taking lovenox the day of the transfer...so far so good, but I am a worried mess about every twinge, cramp, spot, etc.

I truly hope this was just a little hiccup for you and that very soon you find yourself pregnant for the long haul!

  • Oh no, I am so sorry to hear this :(  It's totally not fair.

I had one in December and it was totally heartbreaking.  I had totally bought into the idea of having a second child and when I started my period I was devastated.  Not to mention the heavy bleeding started about three hours before Macy's first birthday party.  Ugh, it was a tough day.

And I am pretty sure I had one last month, but thankfully I didn't emotionally invest in the idea of having another child.  I had three faint BFP (which I posted one to show and tell on the board) followed by three BPN and my period.

But yes, the one in December was really tough on me.  I was a mess for a good two weeks.  I am so sorry you are having to deal with this :(  Keep  your head up and if you ever need a shoulder to cry on, I am here.

  • Im so  sorry! your right its is a huge waiting game and it can completely take over your life!

I had a m/c nov of last year it was the worst thing Ive ever gone through but we kept going weve been trying for a few months and my cycles are still wonky I even had an annovualtory one I believe was from stress according to the normal blood test results.

We want this so bad and its so difficult to  wait but Ive learned your life can't revolve around TTC don't not do things beacuse you might be PG or set timelines for yourself Im the worst at this evry month I calculate estimated due date and daydream about announcing it an then obviously af shows up, H and I are taking a break not from TTC but charting, opk's were taking the stress and pressure out and doing it when we want!

I hope you get your BFP soon!

  • I'm so sorry to hear this.

  • I am so sorry to hear this!  It is such a roller coaster... but all you can do is just keep trying.  I am now on my 2nd cycle after my D&C and last cycle was anovulatory.  The whole process sucks, but I feel like you have always had a good mindset about it.  I remember you saying  you were just going to have fun with it and not chart at the beginning, etc.  I def think that is the best way to go.  At least now you know you can get pregnant!  I'll be thinking of you!!!

  • Thanks everyone.  Yes, we just are going to have fun with it.  I'm not charting.

I know we will get pregnant.

It was just so perfect - winter pregnancy - May birthday - I even daydreamed about where my shower would be and who would be invited.

It is all a learning process, and we will keep living.

  • I'm so sorry!  Hang in there!  I hope you get a BFP and a sticky baby very soon!

  • I am so sorry. I had a CP on my 2nd month of TTC and it was so hard. I had already told a few people and the hardest part was un-telling them. A few days later I went out for a friend's birthday and ordered a beer. Another friend's husband called me out for drinking since he thought I was pregnant. It took everything I had not to burst into tears at the table. BUT I did get pregnant the next month. I am thinking of you!
  • Sad I'm so sorry.
