So, I was talking to my husband about our cousin who is expecting and were discussing the "normal" amount of ultrasounds. What is the norm? 1 at around 12 weeks and 1 at around 20? I'm clueless since I had 3 before I was 10 weeks and one once a month up until 7 months and then one almost every two weeks! I think next time around I'll be disappointed if I don't see the little one a lot (although I was big against lots of u/s in the beginning

)
Re: How many u/s?
I had one at 6 weeks (because I didn't know how far along I was...well actually I did, but I lied so that I could get the u/s and see my baby
)
Then I had one at I think 8 weeks to do the optional first tri screening. Then the next one was 12 weeks for the tests that they required us to do for Downs Syndrom and whatever else. the next one was 20 weeks for anatomy screening. That was the last one, unless there is an issue or they think the baby is positioned weirdly or something and need to see him.
I've had 6 or 7 so far! but I was followed by the high-risk clinic (so 3 more than I would have maybe?). I had one at 8 weeks which is standard for my practice, the NT scan at 12 weeks, the anatomy scan at 18 weeks. I had another u/s at 10 weeks because they couldn't find the heartbeat on the doppler... but that wasn't routine.
Normal is one at around 20 weeks to check anatomy development.
Optional but not uncommon is one around 12 weeks to check nuchal translucency (high levels of fluid are correlated with Down Syndrome).
Some women also get another one early on to date the pregnancy.
If you go past your due date, you'll probably get another one to check fluid levels, etc.
So, the answer is one. Or more.
With DD, I had the ultrasounds at 12 and 20 weeks. I also had a quickie check with a portable unit in the hospital at 37 weeks before they started the pitocin to make sure she was head down.
