Friend Hugging?

Are you a hugger?  If you are, do you hug everyone or just close friends and family?  Do you come from a family of huggers?

I'm not a hugger, I don't mind hugging, but it's rare that I initiate the hug.  I'm not from a huggy family.

Re: Friend Hugging?

  • I am a huger, I would not say I come from a huggy family but we do hug.

I hug my family and my friends on a regular basis. Now DH comes from a super huggy family so I had to get use to hugging people I did not really know pretty quickly.

  • I hate any kind of hugging. I'm not a touchy feely person and it's just flat out awkward for me.
my family does not hug. DH's does and his dad is a kisser to boot. It's really really really AWKWARD for me. I carry in C all the time now as my buffer.

  • I am a hugger of family and kids, but not really friends.  If a friend wants a hug, then I will...I may be a drunk hugger, but I can't really remember.

  • I don't initiate. I have a few friends I don't see super often that hug on goodbye, but that's it.  Last night at our moms group I got a hug from one woman, but I'm guessing she's a  hugger.

  • Ditto Melrrr, I don't initiate but I do hug friends I don't see often. Family?  hmmmm... I would say my family and DH's family are semi-huggers, or mixed, or something.  It doesn't bother me but I frequently feel like I'm that awkward hugger who leans left when I should have leaned right and it turns into that weird half-sideways-hug.  LOL

  • My side of the family are non-huggers.  DH's family however......wow.

I'll go either way it most situations.

Me too. I don't mind hugging but I hate when people sometimes hug and sometimes don't. I don't know if we're supposed to or not. One time a friend in my moms group hugged me and I said "ok we're doing this now? I just like to know what to expect." Which they all found really amusing and began hugging me at random times whenever we are out to make me uncomfortable.

  • I'm not a friend hugger.  I'll hug family, but it wierds me out when friends hug.  Certain circumstances are, of course, different, but a hi and bye thing is not one of those.

  • I always hug my family and friends... usually hello and goodbye.  There have been times I've hugged complete strangers (if they are with friends).  After a few drinks, I give EVERYONE hugs   I'm sure I've made someone uncomfortable in my lifetime. • I have a group of old friends that all hug whenever we see each other or say goodbye.  I think it was because we all worked together at a camp in college.  Everyone hugged there, and now we don't see each other very often.  With most of my other friends I'm not the initiator.  I come from a family of huggers.

I know I've been guilty of this on more than one occasion.

Pretty much this.  I tend to try for the side hug if someone initiates it.  Otherwise, if a full on hug is "insisted", I just try to to the pats on the back - nothing too squeezy!  ;-)

  • I'd rather hug, than shake someones hand.

I hug maybe 25% of my clients...is that weird?

This exactly. Although in recent years I've tried to reign it in on the friend hugging because I know it makes some people uncomfortable. I still hug my very close friends though.

I come from a family of huggers. DH not so much. He hugged his youngest brother once in a fit of extreme drunkenness and I think it was the first time they had ever hugged, ever. They were like 31 and 21 at the time.

I'm not a hugger but I sidehug probably 80% of my clients and a few of their parents (the ones I'm "close" to). I'm an elementary school teacher, though, so it's par for the course.

  • I love giving and receiving hugs. All of my family and DH's family are huggy.

It's great teaching younger kids now because the hugs are a plenty.

Non huggers break down those walls and "embrace" the hug! Geeked

  • i come from a family of huggers, so i'm a hugger.

i do NOT, however, kiss...lol.  when the kids are littler, maybe, but it becomes awkward at some point.  i have a couple of aunts that are kissers, but i'm used to it so it's okay.

i don't hug friends i see all the time, i guess.  i mean like, when me and Kel are hanging out, we don't hug hello or goodbye.... but i will often hug kendall hello and goodbye.

with clients, i leave it open to interpretation.  many times, they will go in for the hugs so it's all good.  this is usually after we've worked together at least once, though (like if wedding people are coming back in to talk about an album or something).

i try and hug all my kid clients if they're comfortable with it.  mostly because kids are so sweet and huggy anyway, and i like to make them feel comfortable with me, and maybe even remember me.

  • Total hugger. My family is big on hugs and DHs family has become more so in the past 10 years. I often hug good friends but those I've not seen for awhile too.

Pretty sure I initiated that one.  I was so surprised to see you.  I hugged every Nestie that gave me one diaper.  You all deserved so much more than hugs.

  • I am a hugger, but only with close friends and family.  (I definitely have a family of huggers.) I don't generally hug anyone here, because not many people outside the U.S. do the hug.  I've been embarrassed before when close acquaintances reached out, and I automatically went for the hug, and they were doing the cheek kiss.  It's definitely been an adjustment, but I know when we return, I'll go right back to it.

  • i am a big hugger.  and i am laughing reading this because i know i have hugged several of the non huggers in this post.  lol

i even hug my clients sometimes, but rarely the ones charged with creepy stuff.

Ditto to Z, every word. My friends and I always hug. They are like family to me. My family are big huggers too.

My FILs are big huggers and kissers... I wasn't too comfortable with it and sometimes I'm still not, because they aren't like my family that I grew up with or my friends that I have known longer. Sometimes I try to get away with it but they always find me. Moreso now then when we were engaged. lol

DH is a big hugger too... When he's had a long day, he just wants to hug for what seems to be forever to me, it's like 30 seconds to a minute. lol...

  • I'm a big hugger. I love hugs. My family is big on hugs too. Dh's family is a little too. His Mom wants a hug every time she sees you. As in, I left to get the mail and when I come back in the house it's another hug and how are you? Which is weird. I hug friends hi and bye if we are meeting for dinner, etc.but not if I see them at school or soccer practice. That would take too much time. :)

  • Hugs all around!

I'm a hugger from a family of huggers.  DH's family hugs as well.

I hug friends and family alike and believe that I may or may not have hugged a few random nesties at various GTG's over the years.

  • I'm a hugger.  Friends & family, though if a stranger really needed a hug and wasn't a creeper/scary dude I'd hug them too.  Haha.

    I do initiate the hugs.

I come from a family of huggers.  I'm originally from the deep South.  It's what we do.....y'all come on in, let me make you a glass of tea & hug your neck. :-)

  • Some of y'all are my worst nightmare! LOL

It's a BIG deal if a kid gets a hug from Mrs. Star. They know I don't hand them out.

I do hug and kiss C though =)  I think she's just like her mom because she pushes you away or turns her cheek ;-)

  • HUGE hugger over here.  I will pretty much hug anyone.  Even other women who I've just met, especially if we clicked.  DH and I went to a wedding Saturday night for a co-worker friend of his, and I met a lot of his co-workers and their spouses/SOs.  One of his co-workers and then one of the wives I really enjoyed talking to and we had a great time, and I hugged both of them at the end of the night...although it was initiated by them, too :)  Oh, and I also hugged both of their husbands/boyfriends, too....we all got along really well and had a fun time at the wedding!

I come from a very huggy/affectionate family, so I love showing affection to other people.  Non-huggers (almond, bpaullo, etc), beware, because I WILL hug you! :)
