Re: ArtPrize

  • Chris's family from Detroit is coming in for this so we are excited.  Great post because we want to hit some cool ones.  The monkey's on the bridge is a must see for me and Abe Lincoln.

  • I liked Abe, and even more after I read the artist's statement.

  • I love the picture-of-pictures on the backside of the BOB. Those things always fascinate me.

    What's the Abe Lincoln one?

We lingered in St. Cecilia tonight. I am thrilled with the addition of music as AP entries this year. Downstairs they have a room full of listening stations where you can, if you had the time, listen to all 47 songs that were entered. Lots of local artists and I've already made an iTunes purchase based on what I heard.

Did you happen to see John Proulx? He is a friend from high school and I was bummed I missed it. We have not gone yet to AP, but looking forward to it!

  • I like this thread.

I have seen very little of ArtPrize so far -- just what was visible from walking down Monroe between DeVos Place and Pearl.  And I give a "WTH?" to the car in front of Bull's Head.

Yes, please tell me where Abe can be found.

  • I haven't seen anything yet, but my church (Monroe Community) is being interviewed by Christianity Today because of its involvement which is kinda cool.

My friend posted this kid's guide to artprize which I'm going to use to plan an afternoon with my niece: http://www.thebigbinder.com/2011/09/19/kids-guide-to-art-prize/

  • We are hitting AP tomorrow. Starting on the Westside. I really want to see TBA Brown Line Approaching. 5 layers of different color duct tape to create a black and white image of a Chicago brown line train. The use of a non-traditional medium is interesting to me.

We will probably go all together twice. Henry and I will probably walk down and wander around a couple days on our own, provided the weather is nice-ish.

  • Abe is outside of the JW's main entry, near the flouride statue.  It's Henry's favorite.

My WTH from last night was Cousin It's family.  It's basically yarn dressed up.  Anywhere else, it would be cute and get a pass, but it's in the JW lobby, and is super out of place.

  • I'm going to try to convince some of my classmates to visit AP.  Not necessarily with me, but just to try to expose these Detroiters to the awesomeness that is GR.  Why I would want to encourage west side tourism, I have no idea.  They'll probably all love GR so much that they spend every summer weekend in Grand Haven.  Stick out tongue

I thought of you yesterday as I was inching my way across downtown after work yesterday, thanks to ArtPrize traffic.  It was a combination of "Yay!  Look at all of these people visiting Grand Rapids!" and "Get the hell out of my way, tourists.  I've got places to go!".

  • You could also have thought of me because traffic is now a daily way of life for me.  Yay Froggertown!
  • The nest won't let me delete something I meant to put in Randoms.

So, in our short trip last night, I noticed there was a lot more "Rah rah Patriotism" and a bigger presence of religous art than in the past.  Anyone else notice this?

Yes, on the patriotic art.  Like I said, I've seen very little of ArtPrize so far.  But two patriotic pieces caught my eye (on the Waters Building and in front of the bank building on Monroe/Pearl).

I also wondered if this was a trend, and if so, what prompted it.

My guess is 9/11 anniversary.  Pandering is icky.

Um - this was entered last year! It was at the Women's City Club. And if it's not the same thing, it's almost identical. Duct tape, subway train as the subject...I have a photo of it in my Facebook album from last year, even.

What?? Hahaha. I didn't see it or hear about it last year!  I really hope it is the same artist. It is marked as a top 25 for the westside.

  • Giant metal lizards on lamp post on Monroe near Pearl. I'll end up getting pics of those to send to my BFF.

There is a wood sculpture of a female and a dog running I think on Cherry near Hillmont apts.

Big giant fish coming through the bricks in front of the Van. Neat but "uh?".

  • Chymes - it is the same artist. Last year he submitted "Kiss" Penn Station NYC. Different image, same medium/technique.

Ah - good to know! I would have been a little upset if a) the same thing was entered again, or b) someone had so blatantly copied the medium/subject.

  • I spent most of yesterday afternoon and evening at ArtPrize with my mom and brother.  B joined us for part of it, but he has a Man Cold, soooooo.... yeah.  Some thoughts:

The Public Museum had a couple of pieces that I really liked.  The Cronin piece (untitled) with a woman sleeping with paint hovering over her was very interesting to me.  Branches (with the tree branches cut from one piece of black paper) was neat.

At the Ford Museum, the giant bronze sculpture of the man with the bow and arrow was impressive.  The bears in the fountain were adorable.  Pioneer Woman was nice.  Fallen Soldier was powerful.

The Bob was an absolute madhouse and I only some some of the pieces before fleeing the premises.  The Stories We Tell -- with the words written in the wrinkles of the portraits -- was interesting though.  I liked The Power of Women too.

I liked a number of the pieces at Open Concept Gallery.  Quantum Confusion was kind of cool.  I really liked Old Saints and Young Martyrs.  The paintings themselves didn't blow me away, but combined with the "artist's statement," the way that they portrayed really religion was fascinating to me.  I thought it was very thought-provoking and I loved the illustration of religion in modern day.  Because it got me to think, this was my favorite so far.  I should say it's definitely not for everyone though.

At UICA, Wappen Field (where you stick your face in the masks) was fun.

  • The kids and I just went for a quick stop to see the parking lot that's being painted near(ish) our house.  It's really cool to see, guys.  Go look.  And then go into the gallery too.  It's been a gallery for a few months, and is such a nice space.  There are 20+ artists there.  Worth a stop.  Easy to get to, easy to park at.

http://www.artprize.org/artists/public-profile/93353  Here's a link for the parking lot art.  Watch the video if you have a minute.  It's a different piece, but gives you a good idea.

Thanks for sharing this, it's on my list.  I feel like I'm behind right now (out of town for 2 days).  I haven't seen much that has "moved me."  I have seen art that is amazing in construction, and that make me laugh or smile, or wish for more serenity.  But I haven't been really shaken by anything yet.

  • Is anyone else having a hard time with time layers and ArtPrize?  Seeing a huge sleek painting in the JW where the kids had made the crayon mural was weird for me.

It took me a while to figure out what you meant, but I think I get it. That hasn't bothered me so much as the "repeat artists" do. The crayon lady/school did another crayon mural. It's almost exactly the same, down to the multiple wood panels. The duct tape train image guy did the same thing again. Etc. Last night I was working with Street Team and got talking to a woman whose map was very creased and worn - she's obviously very interested in ArtPrize. I asked what some of her favorites were this year, and she picked two entries - done by last year's first and second place winners. It's like she didn't even bother to look at other artists. Come on, let's have some originality here, people!

  • I agree.  ArtPrize is partially a series.

We had interactions with 3 different Street Teams yesterday.  The kids got rubber ducks.  I don't quite understand the purpose of the teams.  One group of 4 literally walked past us, while reaching out to toss ducks to the kids.  ?

Willa 4.6.06 and Henry 10.18.08 Camp Sinki
  • No idea about the ducks, sorry. It seems like the ST shifts do something different literally every day, and one group on any given day may be doing something different than the other group also working on that same day.

  • Has anyone been over to see Tigers' entry yet?  I've stayed away from most of downtown so far, but have plans for the weekend.

We went to the Ford museum today, with intentions of going to the VanAndel too, but they don't open until noon, and we arrived at 8:30.  Instead we walked around GVSU.  It was a nice morning.  I know most of you can't get there during the day, but if anyone is going at that time on a weekday, we had no problems finding a free parking spot there.
