I am curious as to your thoughts on the flu shot, do you usually get one?

I have always gotten them since my companies have offered them at no charge.  This year even though its free I am thinking about not getting it.  I have made a huge change in what chemicals and medications I put in my body and I am curious to see how I do this year without it.  This also goes along with me wanting to get off of BC but the consequences of that not working are far worse than getting the flu from no flu shot.

I've only gotten it once. I *knock on wood* have never gotten the flu yet. Our work was almost requiring it since we have so many patients who come in sick. I don't know if I'm going to get it this year.

See it this way. The flu vaccinations only prevent one strand of the flu so normally most people don't get that strand because of the vaccine. If you do get the flu it's probably because you got a different strand then the one in the flu shot.

I got the flu shot once, my first full year of teaching.  That year, I got the flu twice.  Twice!  And each time, I had a back slide so I ended up being sick for almost a month each time.  I haven't gotten the flu shot since and have only gotten the flu once since then.  Now, sinus infections are another thing entirely.

I never used to get it until I started working for the State and they offer it for free too. I feel the same way about putting all that into my body, but the judge that has the office across from mine likes to <forcefully> encourage everyone to get it.  Last year's hurt a lot more though!

I'm new here but thought maybe I'd give this a go.

I got a spray tan done last night (my friend does them at her house) and it looks WAY better than the first time she did it!  I'm pretty excited I can no longer be accused of being Casper's cousin - at least for a week or so :)

I get to start Rosetta Stone for free thanks to my school district!

The weather is awesome except I wore a skirt - not a good idea with the wind.  Fire drill + outside school + skirt =  narrowly avoided wardrobe malfunction

My husband's cousin just started a mobile spray tan business. I love the way it looks! Just not after a week. I wish it wasnt $25 a pop so I could keep it up

Yeah, it can be pricey.  I don't know how often I'll do it but if I do it 3 times or more a month, she'll do it for $20.  We'll see.  $60 a month can add up!

  • I have gotten the flu shot every year since 1997, the year I had the flu.  It was so awful I thought I was dying--at one point I hoped I would die just so I would feel better.

This year I think they've changed the injection where it's not a needle it's more like the old fashioned booster shot.  I might try and skip it.

Personally I think worrying too much about things like aspartame and chemicals from flu shots is silly but that's JMO.  It's not like a glass of tea, a diet soda or one flu shot is going to make that much difference in the grand scheme of things.

My AW:   Today is my Friday and the wedding festivities begin!   I've never been a bridesmaid... so I'm excited.

  • Congrats on the good news everyone!

Leslie - You have done such an amazing job so far, I hope you're able to make the goal for the RE.

No real AW here.  DH has a rare Friday night off so I'm trying to figure out something other than dinner and a movie to do.

  • Julie - I am so green over here. I have dreams about going to the Harry Potter park, seriously.

Re: Flu shot: I never get one, because it seems like most years there ends up being a shortage and I'm not in one of the higher-risk groups. Last year, with the wedding and honeymoon and everything, we went ahead and got one, just to be on the safe side. But I probably won't this year.

AW: I had my first day at my second job on Tuesday, and I think I'm really going to enjoy it. It's going to be more interesting and fun than what I do at UNT, and my boss there said she wants to help me become more marketable so I can get a full-time job. She's going to let me do some things I don't have experience in so I can add them to my resume.

This weekend we're watching the twins for three nights, and the first day and night we'll have the 2 year old also. I'm a little nervous, but mostly really excited, I think it'll be fun.

Hee, I'll be anxious to hear how you feel on Monday.  ;)

Tiffany--so jealous of your wedding festivities!

I got to go in March and was a little disappointed (I'm not a huge thrill ride person) but I think it had more to do with the fact that Bill wasn't there with me.  I'm excited because it should be more manageable with the fewer number of people than the weekend I was there.

  • I LOVE Harry Potter at Universal -- the butterbeer is AMAZING!

My A/W is that I've been working as a compliance teacher at an elementary school (so I've been away from the boards :-( ) and I was just hired as a 4th grade Reading and Writing teacher there!!  I'm very excited to be back in the classroom but nervous at teaching the "big" kids (I taught 1st last year).

I would like them to make a broom ride, where you're on a broom by yourself and feel like you're flying.  Idk how they'd do it, but that's what I want them to make.

  • Leslie - Your accomplishments are amazing - you should be so proud! It's very inspiring, and makes me realize just how badly I need to get back into my healthy lifestyle routine. (Less wine, less tortilla chips, more sleep, more cardio/yoga/swimming)

Flu Shot - I have never had it before. And I am on the "Supposed to Always Get It" list since I have asthma and am prone to things developing into respiratory problems. But honestly, I really don't get flu/cold's often and have never felt like getting it would drastically change how healthy my winter is. And most people I know who HAVE gotten the shot end up getting the flu anyway.

I went to use my Groupon at a salon for a mani/pedi. They put my feet in a bowl of lukewarm water (yes, a BOWL. Like a mixing bowl - they didn't have actual pedicure chairs) and I sat there for 35 minutes. I'm pretty easygoing, figuring they're just slammed and will get to me ASAP. But then when they started working on a recent arrival, I left. I have never walked out of a place, but this place was creeptastic.

    Ice cream anyone?  <------clicky!

I think it's hilarious... and a bit silly to boycott.  Of all the things out there destroying our values, and those moms want to boycott ice cream?  Try looking at the bigger picture, and boycott something that is a legit threat to morals and values and all that good stuff.  They also have one called Cluster Fluff, which makes me giggle.

I also think it's pretty funny. And it actually has rum flavoring in it - so it's already geared towards adults. I don't think that kids would like it anyway.

So true - there are bigger fish to fry out there in the world than a few pints of Schweddy Balls.

And for the record, I am TOTALLY trying this. Sounds delicious.

Haha, I know. Maybe it'll cure my baby fever, lol. But I keep telling Courts, not many people get this much practice before having their own, so it's a good thing, right?

ETA: Schweddy Balls. I think it sounds great, and I want to try it. Cluster Fluff is too rich for me, but I love rum and malt balls, so I think I'll like Schweddy Balls. I think the name is pretty tame, actually, especially considering it's based on an SNL skit.

I agree!  I love the names of all their different flavors of ice cream...it cracks me up!

I posted this on TK, but here it is.

Well, I am a parent and I think it's funny.  I also understand that I am raising my child in a world where she will things that some may find offensive and I need to teach her the proper way to handle that.  I am not naive enough to think that vulgarity isn't everywhere.

ETA: I realize that I sounded judgey, but it was in response to someone else's post as well.

  • All of you ladies with your workouts and weight loss are awesome. I'm jealous. It's almost enough to get me off of my rear. I'm hoping that the bf-ing diet kicks in soon and burns some fat off me.

I'm also super jealous of those of you who have been/are going to the Harry Potter park. I think I'm going to go as Hermione for halloween this year while I still have the hair for it. Also, because the baby is going as a dragon.

I think I love you.  Ice cream can't make or break the kind of person your child turns out to be - parenting can.  High five to you :)

That's my point.  People getting offended by things like the vulgar name of an ice cream or not wanting their child exposed to it drive me nuts.  This kind of stuff is EVERYWHERE, and even on the nightly news.  It's the world that we live in.  I shelter her, yes.  Any parent tries to shelter their child.  But I also understand that it's my responsibilty to teach her how to maturely and adult-like to handle situations, not just hide them from her.

Thank you though, I always feel like I'm some awful parent because I don't see a problem with stuff like this.  For instance, I don't correct adults when they curse in front of her.  They are ADULTS.  She knows what words she's not allowed to say, and she doesn't say them.  Just because I have a child, doesn't mean that the whole world has to conform to her.

    Yes

The irony in all this, is nothing is really a big deal to kids unless adults make it a big deal.    The article and the big fuss brings this to kids attention when they otherwise would have probably never known about it.

  • Well, I have to disagree.  Just because vulgarity is everywhere doesn't make it OK.

Plus it's just stupid.  I mean, that title certainly doesn't make me want to try that ice cream.

No, we agree actually.  I don't think that's "okay", but I'm also not going to throw a huge fit over it.  That's their style... very tounge-in-cheek names for their ice cream.  They have no responsibility in raising anyone's child though!

Agree.  But... to me, it;'s just dumb.  Why take a risk like that?  If there's no real advantage and it's somewhat offensive, why do it?   I mean, is that the only thing they could think of when they made that flavor?  It's in bad taste, in more ways than one, heh.

As a parent, it's just one more thing to have to explain to my kid and personally, I'd rather not have to.  And while I don't agree with going crazy over it, if no one ever takes a stand, then we'll just continue to desensitize ourselves and where will that end?  JMO.
