Re: from radio: Did/do your parents have a favorite kid?

  • I don't think my parents have a favorite, although I always say my sister is the favorite, but my sister says I'm the favorite.

DH on the other hand, his mom clearly had favorites and all the siblings knew it.  All of them (5) can tell you the favorites order.  It was not a healthy situation and they still struggle with it 5 years after she has past.

  • Yes, my older brother.  They never said no to him and still don't.

My little brother is the non-communicative devil and I'm somewhere in between them.

  • I wouldn't call it a favorite child.  More like "neediest child who requires the most amount of assitance and is not a self sufficient adult".
    image
  • One of my older brothers was considered the golden child.  He can do no wrong.

ex. I am 5 minutes late with a valid excuse and I hear about it for a year; my brother is 3 hrs late just b/c and it is all good and never mentioned

  • My dad did - he favored my youngest sister K. That punk could do no wrong Confused She never had to face any consequences or grow up because my dad let her get away with everything and my mom wasn't really around much to raise the youngest two and it shows (she worked two jobs and had gone back to school).

K has been in jail several times, in prison once, and is probably going back before Christmas.

  • my brothers would say it's me. because i'm the only girl, and therefore "spoiled".  (there are six of us)

i think it's my oldest brother, my dad is annoyingly proud of him. i sound jealous? lol.

  • Since I am an only child this does not really apply to me but my MIL has favorites when it comes to her children and grandchildren.

I know this because she has said before that she likes SIL more because she listens to her many times. When they were younger her favorite was DH. SIL, at family functions, would bring up when they were younger and how perfect her mom thought DH was and how difficult she was. She would say,"We all know mom how perfect Andy was and he could do no wrong." I think that is why she does everything her mom asks of her now.

With the grandchildren she treats the first grandchild the best. She is always criticizing SIL 2nd child. She comments about how bad he is when in reality he is much better than the first child. I am not sure why she favors the 1st. It could be because he was the first grandchild or because he is the only grandchild that looks like her family.

  • Yes, and my mom has admitted she shouldn't have coddled my sister as much as she did...she would have done things differently. We are only 11 months apart, but nothing alike. My mom said b/c my sister was always so tiny, she treated her differently than me...her tall and independent from the beginning daughter. In the long run it hasn't had a positive effect, my sister doesn't have a lot of confidence and is very immature. She constantly screws up and yet my mother still bails her out of whatever it is at the last minute. My sister is 28 and lives at home. High school was the worst, I am so much like my mom that she was constantly keeping an eye out on me, not wanting me to mess up life like she did. She had me at 18 and my sis at 19. I was thought to be the bad one when in reality it was my sister who was. For example, my sister got mad one time cause she forgot her house key at home so she kicked in the door. My mom thought someone tried breaking in, called the cops and everything, we were all terrified. It was until years later my sister admitted she did it cause she was mad she left her key at home and had no way to get inside the house.
  • My older brother is my Mom's favorite.  He just can do no wrong, never could.  He always cries broke and she always gives him money when he does.  I finally told her at one point that he and his live in girlfriend make more money than DH and I do and they only have 1 child and live in a 1 bedroom apartment.  We have 2 kids, 1 in private school and we still manage to have a house and 2 cars.  That doesn't add up.  Her excuse?  He lives near Boston so the cost of living there is higher. Confused

I was my Dad's favorite growing up, my poor little sister was kind of left out.  Now my Dad favors my 3 little sisters (2 of them are my stepsisters) but I think that less favortism and more the fact that they are needy like PP said.

  • My parents treated my brother and i pretty equally.  I was 'daddy's lil girl' but I was still disciplined, etc just like my brother... My mom was the one who disciplined me and my dad disciplined my brother... I think that had more to do with gender though... My dad was horribly afraid he would hurt me.

After my dad passed, my mom did an awesome job at keeping the playing field level between the two of us.  Sometimes he got more attention, sometimes I did... but I don't ever remember thinking he was favored over me.

  • I am my parents' favorite because I am an only child.

  • My sister for sure... She denies it, but my brother and I are 100% in agreement.   I don't want to even explain because smoke will start coming out my ears and will put me in a bad mood for the rest of the day...  it's a bitter subject...

This. My brother is constantly needing to be bailed out so he gets a lot more attention but my mother and I are best friends. I don't think I'm her favorite but her and I are much closer than her and my brother.

  • i dont know if my mom so much had a favorite...but she definitely treated the middle child differently. Mostly noticeable in her 4th marriage while I was in jr high.

  • OMG yes!! My little sister is the golden child! She can do no wrong, even though she lost her scholarship and almost got kicked out of school, has been evicted from her apt. has put my parents in sooooo many financial binds, and is currently having her 17 year old girlfriend move in with her into out parents house. So, therefore my son and I are being evicted!!!

So, yes she is the favorite :(

  • I was the more responsible one with good grades, so I am guessing they liked to not have to deal with my older sister's BS a second time around.  But I don't think the necessarily have a favorite - I feel we were treated pretty equally.  My aunt said that growing up, she thought my sister was favored (and told my mom so) - I didn't notice, even if it was true, but I am sure it made my mom's blood boil!  lol.

I do feel like my DS is their favorite grandchild, though. I am guessing since they live far away and I have a blog, so they have felt closer to him from the very beginning, whereas they still feel like they only see (have a connection with) their other 2 a few times a year (even though they only actually see DS that much, too.)

  • My family is pretty equal.

DH... his mother openly coddles the middle child since she was the middle child and will not allow her middle child to be treated the way she was.

  • When I was a young kid, my brother was the total favorite because he was the 1st, a boy, etc.  All the grandparents doted on him and I was totally the annoying-following-him-around "Hey me too!" second child.

When he moved to live with my dad I became my mom's favorite over time.  When she remarried and got 3 step kids I didn't cause any problems, was helpful around the house, was responsible, did what she asked (except for a 3 month rebellious period when I was 14 that got nipped in the bud FAST), etc.

With my dad and step-mom, I was the ... least favorite.  (DDd longer paragraph).

DH is definitely his family's favorite, although if his older step-brother hadn't been killed over Kuwait during the 90's he would have been.  He was a special guy, so DH tells me.  DH has 3 other step-siblings that I always forget about because they really weren't part of his life.  So for all intents and purposes he is an only child and Maddie is my MIL's only grandchild.

lol - I would totally be in danger of that as well, which is why I decided at a very early age I would only have an even number of kids, or just 1!

  • yes...my brother.  He was the oldest and only boy and is to "carry out the family name".  He was suppose to be the doctor.  Took him over 8 years to get a degree to do something totally random now and my mom use to give him money all the time and he was in massive credit card debt.  She still thinks he's the best thing ever.  He can do no wrong.

I think this is probably how things are in my family.  My brother probably thinks I'm the favorite but I don't think it was like that... I was just the straightlaced kid that rarely got in trouble... my brother was the typical rebellious teenager.

I know there is some issue now with my brother and his FI thinking that my parents favor me/DS over them/their son, but its a more complicated situation than that and its getting better.

Now my niece, the first grand child, she and my mom have a very very very special bond and I know for a fact that she will always be #1 and I'm totally fine with that.  She replaced me and my brother, for sure.  :)

  • According to DH my brother is my parents' favorite.  I think it is more of the prodigal son.  He went away for college to Detroit and he has left again to Chicago for his doctorate.

DH is by far the fav. He is both a mamma's and daddy's boy.

  • There were 3 of us and I don't think any of us we favored over the others. May dad spent more time with my brother when we were younger because of his sports but my sister and I still felt loved and important.

Same here.  Don't get me started.

  • My siblings say I am (but mainly I am closest to my mom)

My brother is most spoiled by my parents though monetarily.

  • They say no, but I definitely was easier and more successful in school. My sister totally thinks I am the favorite, and she's probably right, but my parents don't favor me in the sense of spoiling me. We just get along better.
