Re: Free For All Friday

  • It's Friday!  I'm so ready for the weekend.  Plus next week we find out the sex of the baby!  I'm super excited.

On a side note, anyone want to buy tickets to the Rangers game tonight?  My sister and her bf were suppose to go with us but the 4:05 start time is not fun.  She can't get off work until 5:30.  Selling them for what we paid for them.  Just curious!

  • How much did you pay?

I'm a little miffed about it starting early--there's supposed to be an Aggie boutique this weekend at the Convention Center but now, with the game starting so early, there's no way I'll be able to find a parking spot!

  • I am both ready to go home, and not. I miss the munchkins, but two days away is exactly what we needed. (even if I spent a good chunk of yesterday hung over. OOPS.) I love that San Antonio is close enough for a quick getaway, but far enough that I feel "away".

Missed you girls this week! I didn't realize how used to the water-cooler vibe I had gotten until I was so busy the last few days, and the board has been slooooow.

  • I've been working a LOT lately. It's exhausting, but it feels good to finally contribute financially to the family. I forgot how great it feels to get a paycheck Smile

DH cancelled his trip to LA for today & tomorrow - and I'm excited to have him back! He just returned from another trip yesterday and I need some DH time.

Chelsea - where did you stay in San Antonio? DH and I are thinking of taking a little weekend trip in October, and it's on the list.

    Happy Friday, Ladies!

    Happy Friday, Ladies!

We stayed at the Indigo on the Riverwalk. I plan to walk around and take some pictures today before we check out... it's a really beautiful property, and we've had a great time. That said, we didn't really "do San Antonio" this trip. It was about chilling. We had dinner with some friends on Wednesday night at a restaurant called Boudro's which I would HIGHLY recommend... holy yum. But last night, we ordered pizza and watched Bridesmaids on the balcony. It's that kind of vacation. :)

We paid $45 for each ticket.  We got the presale so they are from Rangers.com and are hard tickets.

  • I'm here... but lazy today.  I have my mid-year performance review today with my manager, and I didn't know how to prepare, so I just didn't.  I don't have any complaints, and I feel like I've done a good job (met all but 1 of my goals as they were set for me), so hopefully she thinks the same.  It's so hard to believe I've been here for 6.5 months!  I'm amazed at the difference having a life outside work makes for my sanity, and also a little disappointed in myself that I haven't accomplished more in that newfound time.

Anybody got weekend plans?  We're going to my hometown, because my parents' business is hosting a gun show.  This is the 29th show in 15 years, and DH has never been to one (even though we've been together for 10 years).  So, we're fixing that :)

  • Woo hoo! I just placed an order for contacts and they were $29.99 instead of $59.99. I doubled my order just in case this was a fluke, haha!

Also, this has been the longest week. TGIF.

  • I think the hardest thing for me is being judged by my sisters. They are my bestfriends I hope they are never disapproving of anything I do. I just sent them an email about something my bestfriend and I are planning to start. I need to do marketing but hestitant due to the fact I didn't tell them. I hope to get good responses. Sorry to be so vague I don't want to break rules.

This is one of our non-busy weekends and DH has to work all weekend. I hate that he works every other weekend. He even works his "off-fridays" and I don't know why. I know it bugs more now that he's married cause I'm at home "waiting" on him.

Can you tell me what a gun show is? Is it a kind of show & tell where people have cool, unique pieces? Or is more like new items, shooring competitions, etc?

I've never been to one - I've never even shot a gun, but I'm super intrigued.

We're going to the Texas State Fair!!! DH & I thought it would be a fun way to learn a bit more about our new home state. Unless it's really hot, then we'll try for another weekend Stick out tongue

  • So... Incubus concert was delayed for an hour due to the storm.  It was so worth it, though.  What a great concert.  However, due to the delay, I got home at 1.  Then got up at 6:30.  I'm so tired.  Haha.

mnkate - the weather for the weekend is supposed to be sunny and nice - in the 80s.  :)

You'll love it! The one time I went I tried a few things (I mean 3) of the fried stuff and felt like I was going to have a heart attack so pace yourself. It's a blast though. The weather is suppose to be perfect for going this weekend.

  • Also what are your thoughts on BOA charging $5 to use debit cards.  I use BOA and I think it's crap.

The fair is awesome! I haven't been in a couple years, but it's so fun, there is so much to do, I would recommend looking at the website to get an idea of what there is going on.

I'm the only one in the workroom today because everyone else is going to a conference. When the cats are away, the mouse will plan her friend's birthday party and help plan her mom's Halloween party instead of work, lol.

The last couple of weeks have been super crazy for me between starting the new job and babysitting last weekend, so I'm looking forward to some relaxing this weekend.

  • I think it's crap too!  My question is, if your debit card can also be used with credit card option on the pin pad, do you still get charged in the month you use it?

ETA: I meant to quote you Lacey on the BoA debit charge that will be starting next year.

I think it's crap.  I understand why they are doing it but I still think it's crap!  We have Chase and I think if they start charging DH is going to go back to his old credit union.  I'm sure there are other ways for the banks to make money besides putting the fees back on the customer.  The Federal Gov is the one that cut their fees from the merchant and now we are paying the cost.  I'd rather just use cash everywhere but someplaces it's just easier to use your card.  Like getting gas, with a child in the car.

That's a good question.  I would think it would still be charged, since it's all the same debit card number.  I don't know that for sure, though.  Do you use boa?  Are you going to switch banks?

Oh andplusalso, they will not be charging premier accounts a fee.  Why would you not charge a fee to the your wealthiest clients?  Why would you charge a fee to those who are barely scraping to by and $5 is actually a lot to them?

Nope I use Chase, but I've heard that they are testing out that charge in areas outside of Texas and with BoA starting it, I'm sure other banks won't be that far behind. I totally agree with you, it's wrong to be charging those that would really notice that $5 a month compared to the bigger accounts.

I saw that, too.  But the article I read (WSJ) said that BoA is the bank charging the most.  The others are going to charge $2-3.  Plus, the article said that the other banks are 'testing' it, but may not end up doing it.  BoA is completely on board.

Yea I read this too. I had such a problem with them and this name change. They actually still don't have it fixed. Now I'm probably definitely going to make the change. I know DH uses FW Credit Union and Ally for things so I may switch to one of those. It honestly just pisses me off cause BOA seem to always want to try and charge more to their customers thinking we will just stick around.

Yeah, I did read that Chase was only $3.  That would be interesting to see if the other banks don't do it because it would give the BoA customers an easy choice to change banks.

  • My flight for PA is booked for next Thursday!!  I can't wait to see DH and check it out up there.

I corrected my teacher in class because I felt she was wrong and didn't want the misinformation to stand. I was very factual and not accusitory but her face said that she didn't like being told she was wrong. I am hoping I do not pay for this later.

She wanted to discuss with the class the issue of selective reduction (a woman conceives high order multiples and decides to abort some of the fetuses). She set up the class discussion by saying "Assume a woman has had IVF and is now unexpected pregnant with 6 babies..."

I pointed out that IVF is actually rarely the cause of high order multiples as most fertility doctors will not transfer more than two embryos and generally aim for one unless they have reason not to. "Ocoto-mom" was an outlier with a nutter doctor and women undergoing IVF are made highly aware of those chances by their competent doctors. The main reason that selective reduction exists is for the consequences of the use of both unmonitored fertility drugs like clomid and the use of artifical insemination, both of which often result in an uncontrollable number of embryos.

I know it is semantics but I have sat in class with these girls and listened to many of them spouting extremely judgemental views regarding women's reproductive freedom during past discussions and the very last thing I want is for the teacher to teach them (and her other 120 students today and any subsequent students) that IVF = high order multiples = selective reduction (essentially abortion.) IVF is such a slippery slope legislation-wise that misinformation like this can really hurt. Who knows if a future senator (or wife of said senator) is sitting in class with me?

  • It's the end of the six weeks which means I'm swamped.  I'm double swamped because of jury duty next week and all the prep work I had to do to be ready for it.

I think the BOA thing is stupid.

Also, I am a die-hard Aggie (I was born the day after my parents went to see them play) and I hate to see the rivalry with Texas die when we leave for the SEC, however, I can't believe some of the Aggies who happen to be legislators want to pass a piece of legislation that requires them to play us every year in football.  Although, I did read that there is a similar piece of legislation in Florida in regards to the Gators and the Seminoles.   ETA:  here's the link!

Answering this in an unbiased way, which amazingly I promise you I am able to do. I feel like A&M kind of has to deal with the fact that it can't have it's cake and eat it too. Out of conference games are extremely hard to manage as there are so few options for them, A&M had to know that going into this. So regardless of how the legislators feel or what they want, this is likely the new reality. I will also be sad to see the A&M/Texas game go and for that matter, I will be very sad to see OU/Texas go as well if the conference shift comes down to that.

I read an article that summed it up very well quoting A&M pres. Loftin when the first thing he said about the whole deal was ""We're so very pleased about the media markets available to the SEC and are now very happy to see Texas being a major part of that." This whole thing is about money and that really sucks because one of the reasons I love college football so much is that money tends to be more of a backburner priority than it is for the NFL. Texas is just as much to blame, the Longhorn Network was about dollar signs for Texas and it's a shame.

While I agree with what you're saying, I don't see it quite as big a problem as some are making it out to be.  You played OU for out of conference for most of the rivalry.  However, I do think this is stupid legislation and, if it passes, it could actually end up costing both schools money for having to back out of contracts.  I will be sad to see this rivalry end this year, but I'm glad that my alma mater is doing something proactive for itself.  Andplusalso, I will say that the A&M admin. has only said, we'll play them any time, anywhere.

I do have another article worth reading.  I found out some A&M/Texas history that I didn't even know about. clicky

A gun show is a place where exhibitors (ie, people who own lots of guns, or maybe have a gun store, like my parents) all go to one place to sell them.  It's in a convention center, and there are rows of tables set up around the room, and people come in and buy guns from them.  There are also lots of other things, like knives, collectible coins, and military memorabilia that also make an appearance.

The funny thing is, it's held in the same building where I had my wedding reception.
