QOTD - Thursday

In honor of Steve Jobs:

How many apple devices do you own?

Do you think the company will be the same without him?

Re: QOTD - Thursday

  • Four: a Macbook Pro, an iPad 2, an iPod, and a shuffle. We're planning to get two iPhones in the next few months. And we might even be replacing DH's crapped-out Dell laptop with another Macbook.

I don't think it will be the same--I think he was the one with the vision of what people would want (digital music! tablet computers!) and I'm not sure where that drive will come from now.

  • We have five total: DH has an iphone and an ipod nano; I have an ipod nano, shuffle, and a really old ipod mini that I keep plugged into my car.

I don't think it will be the same. :(

  • An older iPod that I got in 2005 (?) and I have an iPad at work.

I think the company will go through a rough patch bc he was such a visionary leader but I hope he was also grooming his successors and planning ahead -- I would be surprised if that was not the case, knowing as little as I do about his business plan.

I do have this "problem"/question -- I am not exactly sad that he died bc I did not know him. I have empathy for his family bc of their grief, but what's the right word to express not-quite-sadness? bc that seems to me to imply more familiarity than is true. Yes, I am overthinking.

  • I own three -- iPod touch, iPhone and iPad.  I use a 4th, macbookpro as my school computer.

Yes, seeing as he was sick for awhile I am sure that he has laid out all his ideas, plans, dreams and visions for the company and new products to last them awhile.  The people who do the engineering and creating of the products are the same, and if his ideas are sketched out enough it will get them through a couple years/cycles of new products.  It's what they do after that that matters.  It's not like it was a plane crash or something and all his ideas are gone with him, I am sure he made arrangements for his vision to continue.

  • I have one broken iPod (it did last seven years, however) and will be getting the new iPhone.

Honestly, I find all of my friends' Facebook posts about Steve Jobs rather silly.  Yes, he had some pretty cool inventions and yes, it is very sad that he died at a relatively young age, but it seems very bizarre that all of these people who never met the guy are somehow claiming to be personally affected by his death.  It just seems rather contrived to me, given that he had a family and friends that really are grieving.

  • We don't own any apple products. I guess that makes us weird! i feel bad for his family, but i am not personally affected by his death.

Yup. But I felt the same way when Michael Jackson died. I feel bad for the families and people they left behind, but I didn't know the guy and everyone's gotta go some time.

We have iphones that we adore. They are our first (and currently only) Apple products.  But we're now hooked and will probably upgrade them eventually and I really want a MacBook Air.

  • Three - iPhone and two iShuffles

I hope apple does fine. My guess is, since this was a long illness and not a sudden heart attach or something, Steve Jobs spent considerable time and effort in making sure there was a leadership transition and vision that melded with what he saw for Apple.

  • None. He certainly was a visionary... but technology just isn't important to me.

I'm with you on that.  I have a MacBook, and that's our only Apple device.  Maybe if I was in the Apple cult with every possible device, I might take his death more personally?

Plenty of people argued when he stepped down this summer that the company wouldn't be the same without him.  I think the company has probably hired brilliant people over the years that have great ideas and can implement them, but Apple can't quite be the same after losing the person everyone thought of as the face of and the brains behind its direction.

  • We've got two iPods (and had an earlier one that died), an iMac, and I've got an iPhone through work.

I don't think the company will be the same without him, that kind of visionary thinking does not come around very often.

  • I have an nano plus a personal iphone and a work iphone. DH has iphone, shuffle and nano. We are upgrading our current laptop to a macbook in the next month or so.

I think he really did change technology- plus movies, music and cellular devices and I am don't think Apple will be the same.

  • One.  It's an old-skool Shuffle... the kind that is basically a USB stick.  I'm not really into music, so an iPod never appealed to me.  And, I'm cheap... so I've never been willing to pay the Apple cult premium for other products.  lol.

I don't think the company will be the same without him... I think he and his cadre of techie friends were innovators of the century, and he happened to have a great business mind, too.

Personally, I'm not a huge Apple fan when it comes to the current business model.  I think, in a lot of ways, the company stifles innovation (because of the closed system, and the lack of open source...)  But, they have offered some key things (standardization and "cool" factor) that have really helped technology to proliferate.

  • we both have iphones (and are very excited for the new ones!), i have a macbook, and a now dead ipod (from 2005). i've only ever owned macs and i don't see that changing anytime soon.

this exactly. i am sure he laid out a lot of plans but it's not quite the same. it is still kind of amazing to me that on one small device i can have my music, photos, e-mails, games, and use it to make phone calls. if you'd told me that when i was 14 i'd have looked at you like you were nuts!

  • too many! if you count my poor old computer, I have 5...a MacBook, Macbook Pro, iPod Nano, iPad and an iPhone.

and it's hard to say whether or not the company will be as successful...part of me really doubts it. Jobs was really quite unique in that he was able to design beautiful AND highly functional products.

  • A lot. I have a nano and a touch. DH has an iPhone and a shuffle. We have a iPod and a MacBook too.

I'm planning on getting the new iPhone when it comes out.

  • We have one - an Ipod Nano.

I am sorry for Mr. Jobs's death, and I'm sure losing a leader is hard for his family and company, but I find it hard to believe he was the only person doing the heavy lifting. At least that's what I hope!

  • Two.  I have an ipod that I've used only a handful of times - I bought it when I was marathon training but quickly discovered I prefer to run without music.  DH has has a ipod nano he uses at the gym to listen to lectures on.  Yes folks, we are that nerdy and boring.
  • I don't own any.  DH owns an iPod he rarely uses.  And I feel that Apple has become so much about the brand that the company probably won't change very much.  Hadn't he been sick/less involved in the company for a pretty long time, anyway?

  • We have an iPod Mini, an iPod Nano and an iPad 2.

I think the company won't change for a while, but eventually there will be an irreplaceable void in the creative process, and that will lead to a slide of innovation for Apple.

  • a lot.

    me - MacBook, iphone ( can't wait to upgrade ) 3 ipods ( all different generations, but I only use 1 )

dh - MacBook pro, iphone, ipod, ipad

we also have the Apple tv which is awesome !

I don't know if the company will be the same, but I think it will take some time -- I so wonder what Steve Wozniak thinks about everything

    imagesarahelisabethm:
Hadn't he been sick/less involved in the company for a pretty long time, anyway?

he was diagnosed in 2003 or so but had an organ transplant in 2009 -- during his illness he took 3 leaves of absence

  • We have 3 - ipod nano, ipod, and we recently got an iPad and think it is the best thing ever.  I too would not say I am personally saddened but I see the tragedy in it and think the world has lost a good person and a visionary.
  • We each have an ipod and that's it.

I think the company will probably dip a little, and then go right back up.  I think Apple owes it to Steve to continue to be cutting edge.

Also, I agree with Jenn248.  I mean, I get he was a pretty big deal, but he fought one of the deadliest (if not the deadliest) cancers for what, like 7 years?  Yeah it sucks, it's sad, but people are making it seem like it's the end of the world.

I lost my grampa and a great uncle to pancreatic cancer. Each died less than 3 weeks after diagnosis.

My good friend lost his partner to it when his partner was 40. Because he was younger, the cancer was caught earlier, but even he only lived 3 months after his diagnosis.

My aunt has had a brain tumor and my mom's had breast cancer three times, and I would take either of those over pancreatic cancer. It is the absolute worst.

  • Interesting article about his rare form of pancreatic cancer (different than the version Patrick Swayze had).

  • I was going to say zero until I remembered an iPod we got as a holiday gift at my company one year (the next year we got - no joking!! - gum!!). I gave it to DH. I am not a big fan of Apple products. I think the company will be just fine!

  • 2- a really old iPod (don't even remember the model) and a shuffle. I've never used either, but would like to get around to putting songs on the shuffle.

I agree with pp that he was a uniquely talented person who will be hard to replace, but that Apple also owes it to him to continue on. I feel bad for his family and friends- such a successful man who went way too early.

  • Until yesterday and everyone posted on facebook I didn't even know who he was, shows how much I know!  We have 4 Mac products, DH has an old school ipod and I have an old school ipod nano that I found on the street.  I also have a super old mac that was my college computer (10 years old now and currently just collecting dust because I don't want to lose all my music from college on it) and I got an iphone in May.

  • We have 2 ipod minis (one i got for free), and an iphone that i got about 2 years ago. we're certainly not on the cutting edge of technology in this house!

oh wait- i guess we have four if you count DH's macbook air he got from his office. but it's not "ours", or even "his", it belongs to the feds.

I think it will be, at least for a while. long term, who knows since he was the creative force behind it all.

  • 2...an old nano and a shuffle.  I feel bad for his family but I think apple will do fine, thouhg he was the leader of it and so much of the innovation stemmed from him, he has shared his ideas and such with teh other higher ups and he knew he was sick so I would be willing to bet he has plans laid out to carry out his legacy through his fellow apple execs...

that being said, it is still really sad when anyone dies that young!
