Is this tacky?

The Nest just ate my post.  Background:  I graduated highschool in a class of 180. It was not a huge class but not tiny either.  Everyone knows everyone else at least by name.  Forgive me if I have mentioned this before but it pops into my head every know and then even though it is not something to worry about.

I found out through Facebook that a woman I graduated with started an "upscale handbag line."  I think bags start at about $200 and go to a few thousand dollars.  We were not really close in highschool.  I sent her a FB message saying I would love to catch up with her, her family is beautiful, and congrats on the lovely handbag line.  She sent back a message asking nothing about me and telling me to buy something with my 15% off coupon code.  P.S.  I still can't afford anything on her site.  Maybe I can learn from her about tacky ways to market myself.  Maybe the whole thing wouldn't have bothered me so much if she had asked thing one about me.  My mom joked that her assistant probably sent the mail.  LOL!  So what is the verdict- tacky or not tacky?

Re: Is this tacky?

  • My initial reaction was "that's rude". Maybe not tacky, but definitely rude. Upon further reflection, I am curious...

May I ask why you sent her a message saying you'd like to catch up with her when you're not (and never were) close?

  • If you had been close in high-school I would say yes, it was tacky of her.  You weren't close and did mention the handbag line in your message.  I can understand her thinking that you were just looking for a discount and that's exactly what she offered.

Yes it would have been nice for her to add some pleasantries but I can see where she thought the point of your contact was her company.

I think I said something about having just started a FB page and I was enjoying catching up with people from highschool.  I just realized I must be thinking about it b/c of the ridiculous Olsen bag for $39000.

  • I'm not saying you were being grabby, but I agree that she may have thought you were contacting her to get something from her (like a discount on a bag).

If you really want to talk to her, I might reply and say "thanks, I'll save the coupon code for when I get my next bonus! I actually messaged you because I've been wondering how you've been..." and ask her a couple questions or something. IDK I've never really cared enough about someone from my past to try to "reconnect" via FB.

  • IDK. If someone I barely knew then and barely remember now contacted me on my blog and told me I make awesome aprons and congrats on my etsy shop (if I had an etsy shop) I'd assume she wanted to buy one. After all, wtf else could she possibly want to talk about? About that time Tommy Douchewad pantsed Eric Jockntwat at the homecoming game?

Yeah, this is what I thought.

It's pretty rare that I'll have a lengthy conversation to 'catch up' with people I friend.  That's kind of what the entire rest of facebook is for.  I don't have to ask people if they have a kid, because they've already posted pics.  I don't have to ask about their job because that's on their info page, and there's a link to their spouse or relationship buddy right below their picture.  I'll say, 'oh hey!  It's great to hear from you!' but that's about it.

  • It was abrupt, possibly rude, but I'm with the others. Perhaps she thought that is the only reason you were contacting her?

If you are really interested in getting to know her (even though you weren't close in HS), you can send her an email thanking her for the coupon code & ask her how she is doing.

I don't know. I have only kept in touch with those people I felt relatively close/friendly with during high school.
