Help me pick a cocktail

We just starting doing a cocktail night with another couple. I am in charge of this week's cocktail and I need ideas. It is expected to be more highbrow than, say, a vodka tonic.

It can't have bourbon/whiskey/scotch in it and it can't have egg whites.

Also, I would prefer not to have to buy a shitton of stuff although I know I will have to buy something and that is a-ok. I want it to be good!

What's your favorite cocktail?

I agree with everything that muddled said. You should listen to her. -ESDReturns

Re: Help me pick a cocktail

  • My go-to cocktail theme night is white russians and The Big Lebowski.  Lazy, but meh.

Are you looking for sweet or savory or hipsterish or what?

  • Like I said in my post...tequila sunrise.

    No  theme night.

In my mind, savory is better than sweet. Sweet is easier, though, isn't it? Hipsterish could be right on target.

    I can't believe I just said that.

Last week we had a French 57, if that is at all helpful.

This is exactly what I am trying to avoid and you know it!

Really, Bowies. I would just prefer others to do the work for me. :)

I was going through a list like this yesterday and marked some and they have since disappeared. Bleah.

  • I have 3 different bottles of rum, courtesy of MIL, so I am thinking of going in that direction.

Heh.  You can infuse some vodka with bacon, mix it with vermouth, and garnish it with a fig slice.

    This is my siggy.
  • what kind of rum do you have? I love Caipirinhas!

I just googled "rum cocktails" and I think this one sounds good too...

Cable Car: Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, orange cuarcao, sour mix

I was just looking at the cable car! It does look good. Of course, we don't have spiced rum. :(  Not that I couldn't get some...

It's funny that you suggested caipirinhas. We are known for them around these parts and we tend to get in trouble when we pull them out on school nights. We keep a stash of cachaca on hand at all times.

  • Pomegranate martini:

    • 1 1/2 cups pomegranate juice
    • 2 ounces Absolute Citron vodka or white tequila
    • 1 ounce Cointreau liquor
    • Cup of ice
    • Splash of sparkling water (optional)
    • Squeeze of lemon (optional)

Shake ingredients in a shaker and put in chilled martini glasses. Put pomegranate fruit into glass as garnish.

I'll use regular vodka instead of citrus if I that's all I have.

I like this. I was thinking pear martini, but the pomegranate tinis are yummy too!

My thoughts would be some kind of specialty martini - always a good safety drink

      • I vote mojitos (lime and mint leaves are cheap :)

but it's also hard to go wrong w/ an oatmeal cookie:

        http://www.cocktaildb.com/recipe_detail?id=4753

(it can be a shot OR a drink--there are variations w/ ice cream or just adding the 'shot' to a glass of milk and putting whipped cream on top :)

Does this really taste like an oatmeal cookie?

BBE- seriously. DH is a total pusher when it comes to caipirinhas.

        Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

We make them @ home w/o the Jager because it's not necessary.
