Mirena IUD Hors...come here.

Was there a point after the halfway mark where you started getting cramping and spotting?  I pretty much forget that I have it, but in the last month or so I've been spotting about once a week (very minimal) and the last 2 days I'm having some major cramping on both sides (bad enough that I need to take ibuprofin).

I've had it just over 3 years and I wonder if the hormones are diminishing to the point where I'm getting PMS and eventually my period.

I'm also curious....if you have it removed at the end of 5 yrs and then have a new one inserted right away the same day, do you still get all of the side effects that you got with the first one at the beginning?

  • I haven't had mine long enough to answer the first part, but on your second question I'd guess you wouldn't have the side effects the second time. I've heard the spotting when you first get it is in part because your uterine lining is thinning. I'd think your lining would already be pretty thin after having Mirena, so you wouldn't have to re-thin it?

Very true...I wasn't sure if the lining started to build up again as the hormones got weaker at the end of the first one (since I'm spotting more now I thought maybe that's what was happening).

  • I had mine in for a little over 3 years, then had it removed to get pregnant again & never experienced anything like that.

Have you had it checked by your OB/ GYN recently?  It could be the hormones like you said, but I'd be a little concerned that it had moved to a bad spot, especially if it's been a while since you saw your Dr.  Mine had moved so far up that I had to have an ultrasound to help the Dr remove it.

  • It's been over a year since I've had it checked.  That's one of those things on my list of things to do that I haven't gotten around to.  I guess now I'm forced to make an appt.

  • Yup I sure have. I think I am almost at 3 years now. Every once in awhile I get some cramps and other PMS symptoms. Sometimes I also spot, but it is very rare and only noticeable after I use the bathroom. I'll notice some on the TP.

I also noticed that whenever I do get those symptoms they are about the same time of the month, even if I don't get any spotting or cramping for months at a time.
