Also I think a lot of people DO say it like "hawt" because it's used in a context where that's what they mean, so that's what they say. I have heard it said properly but it's not really a word I have much occasion to use...

Actually it's pronounced just like "oat." H is silent. I knew how to pronounce it, but then I had 13 years of french.
I learned how to say it when Shelly Long said it in Troop Beverly Hills. "If you enjoyed our haute coture you will love out haute cuisine! Buy some cookies!"

me either.....but i have a slight addiction to Hautelook.com and had to call the other day about an order. it was driving me nuts why the lady kept mispronouncing it. until i realized i was saying it wrong in my head ;p....and now that i read melrrr's post, guess she was saying it wrong too since she said it with an "H"!
Well I'm a super special kind of nerd because I've known all this time but have never shopped there. Although you can take one look at me and know I'm far from sporting haute couture.
