are used clothes for kids gross?
Quint currently has two pairs of pants (both of which are covered in pre-school paint). They both make him look like he is waiting for a flood but he isn't ready to get into the next size up in the waist so I went to a crappy second hand shop (it is a step above goodwill, a step below a fancy consignment shop).
I'm the snotty *** that refuses to put her child in anything but designer brands (I know, I need to be smacked) but it's either this or stop eating. SHould I give up food or stick with second hand stuff?
Re: are used clothes for kids gross?
...
There is nothing wrong with secondhand clothes that are in good condition. In fact, I will probably buy mostly secondhand just because kids go through clothes so.freaking.fast. I won't spend more than 20 euros on a shirt for myself so I certainly am not planning to do that for our kids when you can find stuff that's just as cute (true, not designer) for way less.
Not trying to be rude, but I honestly hope you are joking with this post because there is nothing at all wrong or gross about secondhand clothes that are in good condition and I don't understand why you'd think there is...
ETA: Rereading I'm sure you're tongue in cheek on this one. Right?
Stick with the secondhand stuff and get yourself some yummy food!
I was kidding about the designer part
BUT I wasn't sure if second hand was gross. I had a FRIEND give me a bag of clothes and in that bag of clothes were pants with skid marks in it. Ever since then I've been scared of used clothes.
Wash them.
OK maybe I am a pageant mom. That whole bag went in the trash.
No but I meant wash second hand clothes in general. I certainly wouldn't have thrown out a whole bag of clothes because one had a stain.
That's weird and disgusting.
I buy a lot of Milo's jeans and trousers from ebay and 90% of the time, they look brand new. I say keep buying used, wash everything well before you let him wear them, and enjoy the savings.
Ditto. That's like throwing the baby out with the bath water! :P
I dont shop at second hand shops but I dont think the clothes are gross. What do you think could happen to the clothes? I mean when you buy new clothes, I guess you wash it because people had been trying it on before you. Did you never borrow clothes from friends?
I am a bit confused by your post. If you are in the States, then I think you can buy really cheap clothes especially if you buy off season.
Oh, I forgot you're in the US. If I was there I'd definitely be shopping secondhand for kids clothes! You can find a great variety of cheap and lightly used clothes. No one will even know they're secondhand.
Here I only know of like two secondhand stores. Not a lot of variety and the prices aren't that great. In the US since there's such a market for it I really think you can get great deals on quality items. Go crazy with it!
Coming out of lurkerdom...
Really? You threw the whole bag in the trash because ONE item had a stain. You suck. What a wasteful, judgemental person you are. You could have donated the clothes to someone who needed them. Not all of us are 'pageant moms' and can afford the best of the best or even half decent clothes for our children. Some of us really do it tough and really could have used those clothes you so thoughtlessly put in the trash.
hahaha.
PM Your address - Next time I get my kid shits his underpants, I'll send them to you! That will probably happen about 3 times tomorrow!
lol, tot.
I don't think second hand clothes for babies/kids are gross. I would wash them before putting them on W though. That's hilarious your friend gave you skid marked pants.
No, not gross. But I tend to find its more of a hassle to shop at second hand stores/on line when I can get good sales. I typically buy AJs stuff from Gap/Old Navy or a Carters/Osh Kosh Outlet. This summer I hit a sale at Osh Kosh, I got AJ 3 coats, 5 pair of pants, about 3 shirts and 4 pairs of jammies for under a 100 bucks!
Also, I do buy everything too big and let him wear the heck out of them. I only buy pants with adjustable waistes and I do over sized shirts. He's gotten tall since the last time you saw him so that helped his belly, but he still has one! He's in a 4T for NL stores and he's only 2 LOL
I think it would be worth it to buy pants, coats and special clothes (suits, ski attire) second hand.
Are you getting the kid tax credit? I forget the name of it but they give you like 140E every quarter. I used that to buy all of Quint's clothes from Hema
You know I love AJ's belly

Neither you should just go to Target and buy him some pants. Why only designer stuff? Seriously, I don't get that AT ALL. I mean, even if you can afford it, why?? It seems like such a waste of money to me. Like you said they're going to be covered in paint (and lets face it TONS of other super disgusting stuff, these are preschoolers we're talking about) either way.
That said, I am perfectly happy with hand me downs of any label/design. Both my kids wear a LOT of hand me downs, like almost exclusively hand me downs most of the time. I just don't see the point in shelling out that much for their play clothes. For holidays or photos or a special outfit I might spend more but otherwise sorry, no way.
Laughing at me because I am poor? Shame on you.
And this is why I lurk.
Who is laughing at someone for being poor? While I think her joke about the designer clothes was lost on most of us I don't see her laughing at anyone for being poor. And I totally don't get the correlation of lurking. You act like everyone around here types with gold keys and bathes in hundreds. You have no idea what everyone's financial status is here, so saying you lurk because you think people would make fun of you for being poor is crazy.
Um wow, Otto gets maybe one designer outfit per season for special occasions, the rest is target (my suitcase coming back here was mostly filled with stuff for him!)
I have always put Otto into second hand stuff, I have a friend that is always giving me things for Otto, some are stained, those just go in a hot wash and sent to goodwill where people are grateful for anything, the rest stays with us. I really don't understand the problem, why waste the money especially if he is going to cover it in paint?
