Poll: Age difference between you and SO.

I am 7 years younger than my DH. Last night, we were watching Hocus Pocus together. We were talking about growing up in the early 90's.

I think the movie came out in 1993. It was strange to think that he was in high school and that I was still probably playing with dolls.

Re: Poll: Age difference between you and SO.

  • 6 years.  For me the strangest age gap to think about is him in college while I was in middle school.
  • Hmm, I'm 3.5 years OLDER than H. Embarrassed

  • DH is 5 years older than me.  It comes up when we talk about the 80s.  Being a good German, he loves the 80s.  My 80s memories don't really come up until 87 or so, whereas, DH remembers the whole decade.

  • I am 2.5 months older than DH.  We still have the 80s gap because I was under my cult-imposed rock, so I don't remember much of them until I started rebelling at like 13.  He was very into the 80s.

  • I'm 28 and H is 30.
  • I'm two years older than H. It is only weird to me when I think about the fact that he is the same age as my little brother...and I still have trouble remembering my little  bro is no longer a teenager! I suppose it also feels weird to tell ppl that H was 23 when we got married...that feels so young (especially in France)!
  • We're 2 years less 10 days apart.  It's amazing how many similar experiences and memories we have given we grew up on different sides of the earth, and he's from a small rural town and I'm from a big busy city.

  • BF is 7 years older than me. He was born 16 days into the 80's, so he just barely made it into my decade.

The other day we were listening to music and a very old Dr Dre song came on I didn't know and he gave me crap about it until I told him, uh dude, I was 4 when this came out.

Then I make him feel like a creep when I tell that when he was leaving secondary school, I was 10.

  • H is 3 years older than me, but I was fairly sheltered from pop culture compared to him, so it is interesting what he remembers from TV and movies that I have still never seen. I grew up in the news or Nickelodeon household, while he was allowed to watch PG-13 and R rated movies, cartoons like The Simpsons, and MTV.

  • 9 years.

I was quite sheltered - PBS for 1 hour max a day* and not that many trips to the movie theater so sometimes I think DH is more "American" than I am. I can't tell you the number of times he's been shocked that I don't know about x-series or y-movie

Do we have the same parents?

  • I'm a month older than DH so theoretically we should have the same cultural memories but I skipped the whole video game thing and he skipped hip hop mostly :-)

heh, I'm so sorry to hear you suffered too! Was your Mom also an organic farmer?

  • There are 3 years difference between DH and I, with him being older.  Not a lot of differences in experience, but he was much more into rap and hip hop than I was, so he knows a lot of songs that I don't.

Plus - I was super sheltered growing up...no MTV, no Simpsons, no songs with curse words of any sort (not even saying things like "I swear" or "He's a fool"...nope, not in our house!).  Basically, my mom is cray-cray.

My mother banned MTV, the Simpsons, non-G or PG movies, she had to approve all our books, etc.  We listened to mainly 1950's or Classic Country music.  I was in college before I really realized that not everyone's mother was that strict.  I'm still not so sure it was a crazy way to raise children.

My parents were not really strict about movies, music, or TV. I do remember my parents not letting me read Sweet Valley High books. I think I was only in the 3rd grade so I guess I dont blame them. I had a TV in my room, so I was able to watch shows like 90210.

  • dh is 12 days older than me but even growing up in 2 different countries makes our cultural experiences in childhood different.

  • DH is about 2 months younger than me. We had similar experiences growing up, but I was not allowed to watch Beavis and Butthead, Married with Children or the Simpsons, etc.  I'm actually happy my Mom did not let me watch trash TV like that, but I do remember sneaking quite a few episodes of Jerry Springer after school Big Smile

  • I'm nearly two years older than DH. He just turned 30 last week and I will be 32 at Christmas time. I don't think about our age difference much but it is weird that my sister is closer in age to him than I am.

  • DH is only 6 months older than I am, but I am amazed sometimes at things he doesn't remember from the 80s! Yes, we both grew up in Saudi but there are movies he hasn't ever seen and TV shows he doesn't remember either. He hasn't even see "The Goonies"! Come on! ;)

  • DH is 2 years and 11 days older than me. I think most of our differences with regards to childhood are more from the fact that we grew up in different countries. Like, the other day, for some reason I started singing the Toys R Us song, you know, "I don't wanna grow up, I'm a toys r us kid..." and he was like what are you singing? It was crazy to me that he had never heard that! Although it obviously makes sense.

  • I'm 2.5 years older than my DH. I think though that our different memories from growing up are more about having been raised in different countries than about age. We are not that far apart but we remember different songs, movies, TV shows etc because what was popular in the US was often pretty different from what was popular in Ethiopia.
  • I'm 4 1/2 years older than DH.

Differences come up when we talk about the 80s and about the internet. He had internet in high school- I did not. He never had to use a typewriter and in general he used a computer for most things.

  • DH is exactly 1 month older than me.

  • DH is 6 months younger than me, but I am defintily the younger one. I'm a dreamer, I don't like dealing with real life most of the time. DH grounds me :D.

Most of our differences in growing up are because DH grew up in Argentina and Switzerland and me in the US. Most of DH's childhood was in Patagonia hanging out on his parent's farm, miles from the next farm.

Yeah, this is us, but in the reverse! :) I'm 6.5 years older than DH. I remember the Royal Wedding in 1981. His parents got married within a month of that. So I'd be old enough to remember his parent's wedding. Weird.
