Do you worry about pollution?

Am I worrying too much?

we are moving by the end of the year, so I need to find a new daycare for Genna

I found one that I like, but it's right off a main road (sort of like a highway - it's quite busy).

It's totally safe - big brick walls between them & the road

but I can't help worrying about it being so close to a main road & the associated pollution she'd be breathing in all day from the cars.

I'm going out that way again tomorrow to see if I can find any other daycares that I like that aren't on a main road

but WDYT? would it be a concern for you? She will be spending 4 days a week there....  and I KNOW they are only outside for a few hours a day, but still.... they breathe the same air when they are inside

It does have a GREAT outdoor space though - just SUCH a shame about the location :(

part of the reason we are moving further from the beach is to have green space (we'll have a nice big yard!!) so I'd like her to be at a daycare that has that too - lots of great outdoor space. This place DOES have it - it's just right by that road....

Re: Do you worry about pollution?

  • I think it's a legitimate concern. I know it concerns me when I have Cole outside in the yard. We have ducks in the neighborhood and they poop everywhere and the kid puts everything in his mouth, so outside time for me is always a concern. I'm relating the story just to say as parents we are concerned about a number of things. If the thought of the pollution is something you will be consumed with when you drop her off until you pick her up then perhaps it is wise to look for another creche.

  • yea good point - thanks

fingers crossed I find a good place NOT on a main road tomorrow

*sigh* I like the daycare she's at now SO much.... so it's hard to find something else that lives up to the same expectations

but surely one must exist!!! I have another 6 to look at tomorrow then that about exhausts all the places in our area

but it IS something I'd worry about - and you're right - I wouldn't want that going through my mind every time I pick her up or drop her off......

  • I live in LA so pollution is everywhere, but yeah, I'd be concerned about excess pollution by a DC. I mean, they keep kids inside on super smoggy days here. It's not like they could do that with the road.

  • I'd also be slightly concerned, although if none of the other DCs that come into question have the same level of care or facilities then I might go ahead anyway. I'd be worried about higher rates of respiratory infections and later development of asthma, but I don't know if that's really a founded fear.

  • I think you're worrying way too much.  She can't be in bubble her whole life.
  • It would bother me but not enough to be the deciding factor on where we'd send Milo.  I'd keep looking for one you feel 100% happy about, but if this one ends up being the best, and the proximity to a busy road is the only negative, I'd pick it.

  • thanks for the input ladies

I actually found one today that I like WAY more, and the road it's on isn't nearly as busy (not a highway), and the play area is at the back away from the road, and more importantly I like the centre MUCH more!!! :)  it's amazing! and since she's going to be spending a few days a week there til she goes to kindergarten it was super important to me to find a great place - now I just need to convince the director to find space for her!!!
