People who don't like cruises...

why don't you like cruises?  i'm just curious.  clearly, there are lots of things one could not like about them.

Re: People who don't like cruises...

  • I think it would not be relaxing to worry about missing the boat after shore excursions.  Also, being on a boat with all those people and not being able to get away.  Plus, I get seasick on large boats (based on large ferry ride experience).  Also, fear of dropping things or self overboard.
  • I have terrible motion sickness. The idea that even on drugs I'd be sick and trapped makes me not willing to try it.

so, have you ever been on one?  or you're just afraid of these things?

This plus a touch of claustraphobia plus my fear of what the bar tab would be after my DH and I rocked that ship's rutters off because with no designated driving required and my need for booze to relax in a confined setting, I think we would party like it's 1999 again.

  • I've never been on a cruise, but I have a feeling that I would get bored.  I'm not a big fan of lounge shows/piano type bars, shopping or "planned activities/games".  My idea of a good vacation is really seeing the sights and checking out the local "flavor" and surroundings.  Looking at things that most people probably wouldn't have any interest in.  From what I've heard, there is only so much to see on a ship.  To give you an idea... I was bored out of my mind in Vegas.  My favorite vacation so far was when we visited DH's hometown of Wisconsin and traveled all over Wisconsin/Chicago looking at random places and hearing the "stories" of each one.  I really like to do things "on the fly".  Maybe that is why I didn't have fun in Jamaica.  I never wanted to just "relax on the beach".  I enjoyed the few excursions we did... but otherwise it was very boring.  I just have to keep going to really enjoy the vacation.  I know some people really enjoy cruises... I just don't think it would be for me.

I'm pretty sure i could have written this word for word, including being bored in Vegas.

  • I didn't like it b/c the food was not as great as everyone said it would be (I cook better) our bathroom smelled like a latrine, and the cost of the shore excursions we did was not justified.

H didn't like it b/c he got bored on the days we didn't dock, and the ports of call that we docked in didn't have much else to do besides shop, which he hates.

We were on a pretty cheap cruise; I think we'd have enjoyed ourselves more if we'd ponied up the extra dough for a more exotic location on a bigger, newer ship.

  • I went once and will never go again.  I was sick sick sick the entire time.  I though about jumping overboard and swimming home...  I seriously wanted to die.  It was horrible.  I also though the food was not very good, the beds were awful and the rooms were tiny.  The bathroom was super tiny.

I must say I don't like car trips either.  I like to get to my destination and do what I'm going to do.  I'm not big on the "having fun getting there.'  I'd rather just fly and be done..

The bed!!  I forgot about the bed - it was terrible.  2 twins shoved together w/o a bridge to make a king, and they were like sleeping on concrete slabs.

  • omg, there is sooooo much to look at in vegas!  i guess vegas works well for us because we kind of settle into a together-apart rhythm.  i adore the kitsch and the over-done-ness of it...lol.  it's a manmade eye candy kind of trip.

our cruise food & room was pretty nice. the dinners especially.  the breakfast and lunches were nothing to write home about, but the 24 hour pizza bar rocked.

i can definitely relax on a beach, though.  i do enjoy traveling places when DH is working, because then i can nose around and explore without specific plans in mind.

All of this.  The only cruise I've been on was when TS Dolly was in the gulf and EVERYONE on our ship was sick.  It was so gross.  I wasn't, but nearly everyone else was.

I also didn't think the food was all that good.  Some things were really yummy, others were terrible.

The boat we were on was kinda lame.  Not much to do.  I was 20wks pg, so I couldn't drink and I didn't want to be in the casino with all the smoke.  There was only one pool and it was tiny and overflowing with kids.

So, the weather and the fact that I was pg had some to do with my experience, but I don't think it would have been much better if I wasn't.

  • We just went on a 4 day cruise - to Cozumel and back we enjoyed it but would probly not go on another one that was much longer, the dinners were good we liked them but like PP mentioned I didnt like worrying about what time we needed to get back on the ship. We would consider going on another one possibly with friends but our ideal vacation is somewhere where we dont have to worry about time the whole vacay

Our room was tiny, and we also had the 2 twins pushed together, and the bathroom was really small too. There was a medical emergency on ours and we had to go back to Cozumel so we were about 10 hours behind coming home and being hungover mixed with the boat going as fast as it can to make up time was not fun - super windy and super rocky

  • I felt trapped on our cruise and when we would make stops I never felt like we spent enough time there. I also cannot really layout since I am so pale so it limited what I could really do.

I drank more on that cruise than I ever have in my life.

Ditto to the bolded.   I don't mind some car trips as long as I have a long enough stay at my destination and we do some sight seeing on the car trip.   But places like going to Cancun or wherever, I'd rather just fly and spend all my time there than spending majority of my time getting there and going home.

I'm also a tad claustrophobic, so the small rooms would be no good for me.  I also have some anxiety issues and the idea of not being able to get off the ship would send my anxiety through the roof.   No thanks!  I'll just fly!      (Of course, I won't go anywhere with a long flight, 3 or 4 hours is about my limit on flying, either that or I'd have to take some good anxiety meds before.)

  • what line did y'all cruise on (the ones of you who had twins pushed together)?

we are probably taking one with the kids this summer and i don't want to get stuck in a situation like that. we were on the Emerald Princess, and it was pretty big (lots to do, lots of pools and places to go).

  • I've never been on a cruise, which doesn't bode well for my day job, but I have actually done cruise ship tours when they were in dock at Galveston (Carnival and RC).  I learned from those tours that, if I ever do cruise, I don't plan on being on either one of those lines.

DH and I just feel that we are much more into our accommodations when we travel than anything else. Everyone has their high priorities when they travel, and, for us, it's our room /accommodations.  Unless we're willing to drop $6-15 per person on a cruise line with a super nice suite (which we are NOT), then we aren't going to get accommodations that are comparable to somewhere on land that we prefer.

However, we have discussed that IF we ever do decide to cruise, it would be on a nicer line and would probably be mainly Greece focused cruise as this is an area of the world best seen by cruising.

  • I have been on two cruises - one Carnival to Cozumel and one Royal Caribbean to Ensenada (Baja Mexico).

The rooms were miniscule, so it feels like you can never just relax in your room. It's not comfortable at all. Both of these cruises were free to me. I guess you could do a major upgrade to get a nicer room, but it wouldn't be worth it to me.

I find the planned cruise activities to be rather boring, and I am not a sun worshiper, so laying out gets old really fast.

We have never even done an all-inclusive because we like to rent a car and explore an area, eat off the beaten path, etc. A cruise feels like the polar opposite of that. You are given a relatively small area to explore while on the ship, and then when you do go on shore, you are given a set of touristy excursions to choose from. Obviously you can venture out on your own while on shore, but the time constraints really are restrictive. No one on my cruise got to do anything fun in Cozumel because of the winds. We were supposed to swim with the dolphins, and we ended up shopping because there were no other options.

  • We cruised Royal Caribbean to Cozumel, cant remember the name of the ship but it had 2 pools a rock wall and a putt putt course

my sister, bil and his family went on one a few years ago - it was a larger new one at the time, it had a skating rink in it

  • I pretty much share everyone else's thoughts.  Have never been on one, wouldn't go even if it were free.

Hate organized activities. Hate small spaces. Loathe mediocre food.  Overpriced drinks make me twitchy.  Public pools sort of gross me out. Not crazy about being out on open water.

Oh, and all the people.  I can't stand people.  (((shudder)))

  • I have been on one cruise.  I will never go on a cruise again unless it is the cruise to Antarctica.

The people are generally horrible.  If you like all-inclusives (I don't), you like cruises.  It isn't for me.  Horrible food, trapped on a boat, tiny room, forced "fun," etc...

I prefer to explore places on my own.  The best part of Nevis is that cruise ships are not allowed to dock there.

  • We went on a cruise for a our honeymoon & I loved it.  But after reading this thread, I cannot remember for the life of me why I liked it so much.

  • My main thing is I vacation for relaxation and beautiful scenery.  Hanging by a pool with 300+ people, children, etc. does not sound relaxing to me.  Plus, the boat is not exactly my ideal choice of scenery.  Just the amount of people that go in and out of things all day long gives me the heebie jeebies.  Plus, I want to spend more than a few hours at the ports.  They just don't appeal to me on any level other than maybe several families that want to get together with kids and vacation.  Then a cruise might be an option but still unlikely.

Edit - I have been on a Royal Caribbean cruise one time.

  • I have been on one one and had fun, but it was a girls trip.  We can have fun anywhere.  It also didn't hurt that a group of guys was interested in a few of the single girls in our group and they just bought drinks for our whole group.  For 3 straight days.  My bar tab was tiny compared to what I thought it would be!

  • I have never been but I don't do well couped up and would feel that way on a cruise ship.  DH has no desire to go on a cruise since he already spends 3 weeks at a time on the sea.

I am curious what the bar tab for other people looks like after a cruise.  A 5 night cruise left us with a $1200 bar tab.

  • I don't like them because when I travel I like to go somewhere and experience and learn about the place I'm at. I can't do that from a boat with a 1 day excursion.

I've just never liked the idea of being on a ship at sea either. I'm a land person.

  • Our cruise was on Carnival out of Galveston, to Cozumel and Progreso.

If I had it to do over again, I hear the Alaskan cruises are pretty awesome if you like wildlife, but if I were going to do beachy/tropical I'd probably fly down to Miami and leave from there to go to the eastern Caribbean.

  • I did the Carnival cruise out of Galveston. It was my one and only cruise. It was too much of a party boat for me. Also so much went wrong - I had a terrible time. First the drain in the bathroom plugged up. After trying to contact the cabin steward for 45 min I finally got ahold of maintenance. One night at dinner, our waiter did not take drink orders he just brought what we had the previous night. Then he proceeded to tell us there was only one dessert option that night. He really rushed us through dinner and dessert. As we were leaving the dining room we saw other parties with dessert menus. We arrived late in to Cozumel and they told us our shore excursions would wait for us to disembark. - WRONG. Our tour left without us and we had to scramble to find another tour to take. They refunded the cost of the original tour but we had to pay for the replacement one. Pretty tacky. DH and I will not take another traditional cruise again.

That said there are a few cruises on our potential travel list: Galapogos, Greek Islands, Alaskan inland passage. I have friends that did river cruises on the Rhine. Basically a floating hotel and you see the port cities during the day. I would like that.

  • My parents did the Alaskan one last year and from what I remember my mom said she would have rather explored Alaska herself - they were with a group of about 20 friends, they did say the scenery was gorgeous though
