Re: Throwdown Thursday
You have a point, and I actually had thought about that. They may think they are doing something, but is it actually going to change anything? Maybe yes, maybe no, but probably not.
I know a lot of people can't help that they don't have a job, but if you don't you better be doing something about trying to get another one. Protesting on the streets is going to get you another job. My dad has been laid off several times and each time he spent almost the equivalent of a full day's work on the computer applying for jobs, filling out apps and calling people. This will get you job (and he has an awesome job now). This is why I don't feel sorry for these people.
I'm with you on this.
I have a few married friends and quite a few of them have kids, but we've all drifted over the years. I feel like when they do call me, it's only because they want something (usually for me to do something for them). Once they get it, I don't see or speak to them for months even though I try calling.
My "BFF" is 25 and still in college, partying it up every night and sleeping with randoms. I love her, but we're at such different life points.
I wish the other WI ladies lived closer. I feel like I would have more in common with them once I got to know them better off board.
Ok, these kind of demands are stupid, and muddling what the original Occupy movement was about. There is a difference between success and greed, and what was originally being protested was the latter. They didn't want things for free, or just given to them, but to the have the equal opportunity to work and earn a decent living. This is why the movement needs leaders, so they can kick out all the stupid hipsters with their goofy hand signs a nonsensical demands, and recollect for a real revolution against an increasingly despairing gap between the super rich and everyone else.
There was a story on a radio show called The Story on NPR. The host interviewed a man supporting the occupy Wall street and he said he just got out of college. He got a degree in German studies. And then was complaining about not having a job. The host asked him what plans he had for this degree, and he basically said "i didn't have any plans, I just got the degree and was assuming I could get a job after I graduated." And then went on to complain his debt since he didn't have a job yet. This really got under my skin.
re: #1- IMO everyone has an equal opportunity to work, and earning a decent living depends on how hard you work. I've worked retail, part time, seasonally, in restaurants, etc.- and with hard work and willingness to work whenever I was needed I moved up in every one of those fields- before and after my degrees.
I think what most of these people are really protesting is perceived fairness, but really, was lack of foresight and common sense. Sure, people get laid off, my H has been 3x in 5 years. He got a new job each time just like Zachsgirl's dad because he worked his butt off during every period of unemployment and explored every possible opportunity- not just the things he thought were worthy of his time.
If you spend $100k on a degree that there is no field for, you signed on the line for those loans and that is your problem.
If your city has incredibly high unemployment, move to a different city. We all have to make hard choices, it is part of being an adult.
If you didn't read your mortgage paperwork and had a subprime adjustable rate, it sucks to lose your home, but again, read what you're signing. If there's the possibility you can't afford it, don't do it.
If you can't find a job doing exactly what you want, then do something in the meantime to pay your bills.
re #2- the best response to that is this:

Sure, some people, 10 years ago, were getting golden parachute retirement deals and huge bonuses for non-performance, but there has been a lot of adjustment since 2008. The "revolution" as you call it (which, btw, it fails the political definition of revolution- it is technically only a movement) is either too late or lacks the ability to appreciate change.
Now it is much more performance based pay- yes some people still make a crazy amount of money, but people have the right to be rewarded for hard work, that's why we're a democracy who doesn't elect socialist leaders.
Stand up for something you believe in.
If you think that the Occupy protests are just about people not having jobs and complaining about it, you should do some research. It's about inequality, it's about Big Business running the show, it's about us vs. them... its all of this and more.
Yes, I agree there needs to be some sort of leadership, some more of a main focus and/or goal, and yes, I agree that there are so many out there who don't understand what they're fighting for, and it's those who taint the movement itself, and those who send the protesters two steps back... it's not about feeling sorry for anyone. It's about correcting the wrongs that few have made and the many have endured.
Also, Chris and I have been lucky enough to have our jobs throughout this economic ordeal, but not without scares, and we still support the Occupy movement, so your assumptions are incorrect.
Solidarity, my friends. We are the 99%.

Charlotte "talks" quite a bit and did officially say dada but the rest of her babbles are probably nothing that I could call talking. she does a lot of her own talking and we didnt even want to admit she said dada, but the photog that took her pictures, two ladies at the store and my mom all heard her look at him and say it. We finally agreed that is what she was saying. I would hardly think that kids can pull out much else at this point.
It does kill me to hear that stuff though... seriously- your child will get there, as will mine... no competition here.
My mother was like this -- she insisted Sam was saying and doing things well before she really was. I had to keep telling her, "Mom she's only 6 months old... she's not a genius."
As it is now, Sam only says a few words here and there... when I went to her 1-year check up they asked me if she was saying 5-10 words, and I was like....... seriously?

But instead of getting the mentality of "us against them", do all you can with your own circumstances do be the best you can be. I just don't understand what protesting is going to accomplish anything.

This is the list of their one demands.
If you ask the majority of the protesters they don't even understand most of them. I agree with some of these demands, I just think they are going about it the wrong way.
Oh I'm well aware of the "demands" -- did you see that part where is says "Our use of the one demand is a rhetorical device. This is NOT an official list of demands"

that's what I'm talking about.... creepy creepers.

To be fair, I'm probably like 15+ of those views bc I re-click when people say new things.
Stand up for something you believe in.
We all know you so you're just creepy
That's a bit of a naive statement. And presumptious that OWS protesters are all unemployed college kids.
Have YOU asked most of the protesters? Or have you just seen the few they show on Fox News or that Limbaugh plays.
And what, exactly, do you think is the right way to go about it? Since you agree with some of the demands.
....and you are?
I think its bullshiit that Smo caused such a rift on this board and then onP&CE she participated in an "Offend-Off" whose sole purpose was to offend other people in regards to race, religion, political views, sexual preference, and mental retardation. She actually called racial and religious jokes "hilarious".

Your friendly neighborhood creepy lurker. I posted allot back on the Knot, but since the baby came, I don't have time like I use to. But this seemed like as good a time as any to chime in.
I havent kept up on the news regarding OWS, but I can tell you the one in my town was getting a little crazy. They were defecating in the street in the middle of a beautiful park, loitering and causing many businesses to lose customers, and caused a few community events to be cancelled since they were occupying the space they had paid money for and reserved. I know that most of the people have a reason to be there, however, I dont believe all of the people there truly understand what they are protesting and most of their current situation is based on their own personal choices and not those of big business. We have quite a few protesters (literally two blocks from my office) that have been arrested, ticketed and come right out and say they wont pay the tickets. Most of them from my interaction with them do not really understand what they are protesting. I think education all around would be a great thing. Too many people today feel entitled. I see it as I interview MANY interns for a few positions I supervise. When we talk about career path, salary etc, most of them expect more money than I make now for a 1st year position. good luck with that one. Here is reality slapping you in the face- you dont make 6 figures as a 1st year unless you have a specialized advanced degree not just a general business degree.
well THAT narrows it down... ?_?

Is your first name Jillian?
How old is your baby?
Why are you being creepy? Just tell us who you are.
LOL
No.
13 months. I'd post pictures but then you'd know who I was.
Maybe I'm not creepy. Maybe you are.
Oh, I love 20 Questions.
Why are you being a creepy AE creeper, creeper?
updated 10.03.12
*strokes chin*
maybe I am.
doesn't make it any less creepy that you feel it necessary to use an AE just to speak up.
Because they're probably just a coward we didn't miss anyway.

I agree. This is weird.
