Do you think this board is cliquey?

Going off a post on the PCE board and the post from that girl who wanted information about moving to Europe, I just wanted to know if you think our board is cliquey. Do you think it it easy to join in?

And do you think we get a lot of lurkers here?

Re: Do you think this board is cliquey?

  • I think, when I joined, that it was fairly easy to join in, or maybe I'm just oblivious and just pushed my way through.  Could be either.

I think it can be sort of off-putting to some people who haven't thought out the plan of moving abroad, because we're all so quick to point out the pitfalls and the hoops you have to jump through.  Not that it's bad that we point them out, but I feel like we jump with all the hardships at first post.  Some people appreciate knowing it up front, and some people just want to live the dream a bit longer.  Depends on the person, I think.

  • Somehow I deleted myself from the super cool FB account and asked to get back in like a week ago and am still not in.  I'm pretty sure I'm not part of the in crowd.

Are you guys talking *** about me on FB?

  • TotZiens: If it makes you feel better, I was never part of the super cool FB account. Stick out tongue So at least for a moment, you were part of the cool crowd.

All the time, are your ears burning?

I think an admin has to approve you. It isn't intentional.

  • I've only been posting here for a month or so and I don't feel like it's cliquey, definitely not in comparison to some other boards. I've even been surprised when I post a question and people answer, remembering something about me (for example, "are you the one who...?").

I also don't feel like there are a ton of "insider jokes" like on some other boards, but maybe that's because I haven't been around long enough...

  • Please, you know if I'm going to talk *** about you, I'll just email you with it and save myself the trouble.

But you know I love you and miss you like crazy!

  • A lot of the boards are cliquey so I don't see why this is any different, but we are very welcoming to newbies and offer a wealth of info that a lot of boards don't.  I think our generosity with information to people who just drop by is unparalleled (aside from the travel board, perhaps).  A lot of boards just give personal opinions or links to some FAQs to their "Hi, I'm new and I have a gazillion questions" posts

  • I don't remember finding it hard to join in at all (although that was a while ago...holy cow, I think I've been on here almost 2 years!) I started off just responding to other people's posts that were relevant and gradually got to know people better.

I think this board is very welcoming if you a) don't immediately act like a know it all in your first post and b) don't come off as extremely naive and expecting international life to be all puppies & rainbows. I have found those to be the two things that are really off-putting in new posters.

  • I don't feel it's cliquey. I haven't posted here for that long and don't really know anyone, but I'm never made to feel bad about that. Maybe it is cliquey and I don't realize it Huh?

  • I don't think the board is cliquey. You all were very welcoming when I started chiming in a few months ago, and everyone is really nice. A few of you know each other better than others, and might have had get togethers already, but you don't make people feel left out. I bet there are a lot of lurkers, probably mostly just curious people instead of soon-to-be INs.

It can be difficult to rejoin a group once you've left it on FB.  I've seen people start a whole new FB account so they can get into a group!

  • I'm a super newbie, but have found you all so helpful so far!  Maybe I just haven't been around long enough to notice any "cliques"...at any rate, can I be part of the cool crowd?   Ha!
  • I don't think so... I'm not around all that much (of late, I've really been gone!) and I'm not on the FB page but still people are welcoming/friendly and best of all helpful.

I like this board alot-- interesting conversations... actual topics and not just whining! Also, I think different points of view can be expressed w/o drama/gnashing o' teeth.

  • I don't think it's cliquey.

I was also thinking about this when a lot of drama happend on ML a couple weeks ago. With all the GTGs, secret elves and all that, there has never been (to my knowledge) some personal info shared, drama with personal info etc. And I've been on this board since 2006. People here are genuine.

    image
  • I don't think so.... we don't tend to have a lot of drama and all share a connection.  At least hope we are not or if we are: can I be in the cool club, please!
  • I don't think so.

I also think that we are VERY welcoming when new posters post their intros etc.

From what I remember from when I started posting, it was very easy to just jump into conversation and no one seemed to wonder " who the hell is that?!"

Of course for random " I want to move to xxx, how do I do it?" well, that's another story... obviously!

  • Don't think we're cliquey, unless people come out of nowhere and are nasty to anyone on here. We do defend our own.

(But generally as soon as people leave proper intros, or ask questions and are nice, they become "our own" within a few posts.)

Haaaaaaahahahaha! I'm glad I read the FFFC first, or I would have been like Surprise "whaaaaaat?" at this.

To the original question: I don't think so. My month board on TB feels much "cliquier," as do a lot of other boards I lurk on. I felt I was welcomed with open arms this spring, even though I did an intro post and was then MIA for 2 months after my surprise delivery. I also feel like this board is only topped by the preemie board on TB for its lack of drama. I was surprised the post by the dental hygienist escalated so quickly. I think that was only the 2nd bit of drama I've seen here in 6 months.

  • As a recent addition, I don't think this board is "cliquey"... because of the group's strength/reliance on one another though (in a good way), I do think you know each other well--regardless of whether you've met in person.  Me introducing myself earlier this week/last week seemed important because you're all so close, and I'd only been a lurker, but now I don't feel like I'm not included/part of the "clique"--I just haven't been around as long (and without kids/currently living abroad I just don't have as much to share).
    Anniversary
  • It might be a little cliquey but I think we're also very welcoming to new posters as long as they don't go all dental hygienist on us.

  • I haven't been around much lately and I'm also still fairly new. However, I think this board was extremely welcoming to me. It is obvious that many of you know each other in person and I think all of you in Europe have more in common but it is still a nice board to be a part of.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Good question. I do feel like it is a little bit cliquey here, but maybe that is just an impression I get because so many of you are in Britain and Western Europe and have GTGs. I don't feel uncomfortable posting here and I do from time to time, but can't say as I've made any real friends here either.

  • To clarify, I don't feel excluded here and I do find the board to be welcoming overall. I just feel a little left out sometimes, but that is probably my own fault for not participating more.

And for the record I just read the Dental Hygiene post so now I get where this question is coming from. I don't feel we (you) were negative or cliquey in responses in that post. She asked a question and got good answers. We (you) didn't get at all snarky until after we (you) were insulted. So based on THAT particular post I wouldn't call this is a cliquey board.

  • I feel like some of the other boards are way cliquier, this one not so much.

    Love you all :D
