First dentist visit??

When did you all take your little ones to the dentist? I just read that is should be around one year old but I had never thought if doing it so early. When did you take your little ones for the first time? Thanks!

Re: First dentist visit??

  • 18 or 24 mos I think?
  • I just took M, she's 22 months.   I had asked my pedi..and he said anywhere between 18 months and 2 years is appropriate...just be sure they are kind of out of the really severe "stranger danger" phase...

We did a lap to lap exam, and M screamed the whole time, but she recovered (calmed down) within 30 seconds and left laughing and smiling.

  • 18 months for Bren and 2 for Kay.  She was very scared and still is, but is getting better.  I think the younger the better.
  • E will be 2.5. I forgot to add him onto our dental insurance this year so he'll go in January.
    * DS1...allergic to dairy, peanuts, eggs and turkey *

  • 2 for both of them.  DS was super chill about it and thought it was so cool.  DD was a basket case and had to be held down, I got kicked in the face... she's a "free spirit" for sure, lol!

  • We waited until after E's 3rd Birthday.  She watched me get mine cleaned and them hopped in the chair for her cleaning.  She did great!

  • Forgot about the insurance aspect, thanks K! LOL! I was going to wait til 3, but now I'm thinking I should take him sooner...however, we have to hold him down when we brush his teeth. Not because he's scared, but because it tickles him so much that he laughes hysterically and tries to get away. I almost feel bad when I brush them! LOL!

  • DD just recently had her first visit. DS will probably go next year at 2.5. However, my SIL is the hygienist at the dentis office we got to and has peeked at their teeth before so I know we are doing a good job brushing. I felt confident in waiting because I knew we were doing a good job keeping their teeth healthy.

  • We went at 14 months as advised by our pediatrician. But I know some pediatricians say it is okay to go for the first time at two or even three years.

  • Our pedi recommended it at 3.  We haven't gone yet because she's not on insurance, but she will be in January.

I asked my dentist at my last visit (October I think). He suggested that we bring DS to my visit when DS is about 2, so he can watch mommy.  Then bring him when he's 2.5 or 3.

I plan to ask pedi about it at the next well-check (15 month), but I trust our dentist's opinion, and since he's the one that will be taking care of DS from that perspective, we'll probably follow his advice.

  • We took DD around 2, I think. Anyway, I hadn't taken her before, because I didn't think it was recommended before then. However, when we got there, they said they prefer to see them once by their 1st birthday.

  • Owen went at 2 years per doctor recommendation. When we took Owen to the dentist a couple of weeks ago they asked if I wanted to schedule appointments for both of them in April (14 months). The look I gave her must have said "WTF" because she giggled and said they just like to make sure everything is coming in nicely, get a baseline, and start getting them used to going in. So my baby has an appointment in April.

ETA: they see a pediatric dentist. I do not! :-)
