Moving to London

Hi,

My Fi and I ( we will be married by the time we are in the UK) are moving to london for his promotion. We are going to go look at housing and etc on Thursday, I am doing research, I have family in London in Knightsbridge and Knotting Hill, though have only met them a couple times, I do not know where to look we are getting a housing allowance of 10k pounds a month all inclusive with salary. What can this get us, We live in NYC now. I need some hints, we found out about this ... last night. This will be a 3 year deal that we know of.

Re: Moving to London

  • Holy housing allowance batman! You might check with the queen for a room in the palace. Smile

You can check rightmove.co.uk to get a feel for what you can get at that budget (cough anything you want cough).

Where is he going to be working?

  • Same financial firm as in NY. Thank you for the website. I know its a large living  allowance, I think they gave it to him because he was about to walk away from the company, knowing I would not be able to probably get a job while we are there and he knows I love my job.
  • Is his office in the City of London or in Canary Wharf? That's a start to figure out what area to live in for the commute.

Not sure why you think you can't work here. Spousal visas come without restrictions on working.

  • You know I do not know geographical logistics, but its on Fleet Street.  I am trying to get my figure this out  via google maps.

This is why we are scrapping our wedding in May to get married in the next few weeks so I have " spousal rights" before we move there.

  • How long have you lived together? You could potentially apply as an unmarried civil parnter (and have work rights) without having to rush your wedding.

Also, 10K/month on housing allowance? Holy shiitballs. That's insane.

Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!
I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!
  • I moved in with him in September... I did not know about this "unmarried civil partner" visa. we were supposed to having a wedding in May in Newport RI. I am about to call and break the contract and we are talking about going to city hall.

  • ?10k a month will seriously get you a flat anywhere. You won't have a problem.

Fleet Street is basically the City area. I got my masters near there and lived in Wimbledon and took the overground there everyday, it took like 40 minutes. You could live in Notting Hill but it could be a hike.

  • Yes, if you've been living together for 2 years I think, you can still come on a dependants visa, with the right to work.  This is what I did a few years ago - we got married 6 months after we moved here.  There was no way I was cancelling our wedding plans!  We were also in NYC.

And yeah, that housing allowance is crazy - literally can get you whatever you want wherever you want.  You're very lucky.

Rightmove is a great resource.  I'd try to narrow it down to a few neighbourhoods when you go to look at places, otherwise you can get pretty overwhelmed.  Notting Hill, Knightsbridge and Chelsea are all great places to live.  I think with his office location, it might be more convenient to be on the Central tube line, which would be perfect for Notting Hill.

  • Is it usual for rents to be by the week? I am noticing this on the website recommended?
  • Rents are by the week or PCM  per calendar month.

  • I would look in Marylebone if I had that kind of dosh.  If you are looking at rent per week, multiply it by 4.3 and you'll get your monthly amount.
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.

I wanted it by month, I do not think I would remember weekly. Out of habit of paying monthly morgage now.

They are still paid by the month, just quoted by the week.  I don't really know why!

  • Holy cow, that's a huge housing allowance! I was never even in a position to look at places in Knightsbridge or Notting Hill, but I'd imagine $10k a month would allow you to find a place in either area. Depending on where your FI is working you could also look in Chelsea, Kensington, Greenwich(If he works in Canary Wharf or the CIty)... lots of places.

In expat packages the lease is usually with the employer, and they pay the rent and all fees for you.  It's not like you're going to be writing a rent cheque every month. If they're giving you the ?10k each month and you have to sort it all out I'd be shocked (we're on our 5th expat contract and that's crazy rare) because some people...ahem, me....would be living in a dump with three flat mates banking that fat housing allowance.

So we find the place we like and the company signs the contract? Ok now what about taxes, will we be paying UK tax and NY tax as well.

I work in education, how hard will it be to get a job if I can get one, I am highly qualified by NYC standards and a assistant principal/headmistress of a girls prep school in Manhattan, Will it help on my resume that I studied in the UK for a semister at a good University and went to an American Ivy League Uni?

I am an American teacher teaching in London.  Honestly finding a short term job will not be a problem.  Finding the same type of job you have now maybe a problem.  Schools often do not want to hire a higher level post for a short term, also things work very differently here and I'm going to guess you don't know the system.

You are able to teach with your American cert for 4 years without having to transfer to a British Cert.

Look at TES.co.uk or eteach.com, also try teaching agencies.

You are absolutely right i know nothing about the system. Thank you for the information. I do not mind teaching, i just want something to do.  There is only so many days in the week I can hang in Harrods.

  • Harrods is pretty huge.  I bet you wouldn't get bored.

Oh too bad about having to break your contract - where in Newport were you getting married?  (interested because that's where we got married...)

How did I go there 2 times and never see this?  I did have the best ?18 burger at the diner there.  It was pretty darn delicious.

Do you have a relocation coordinator? Have they set you up with a realtor on this side?

All companies differ on the specific policy for taxes, but having your returns done for you is a pretty standard benefit. Some companies pay your taxes for you, some equalize it so you're paying no more than you would have paid back home, some leave you out in the cold to pay both if you have to (the UK and US are tax partners so you will get credit for paying UK taxes on your US return - assuming your income is above the income exclusion amount). We've always had to meet with the accountants in all our locations to listen to them blather on about how it will work. Typically, any spousal income will be your sole responsibility - you will file and pay taxes on that yourself, separate from your husband's benefit.

Unless your DH is their first expat ever then they should have policies for all this stuff that they'll give you. Including a relocation contact for all your questions and they'll sort out the lease, moving your furniture (if you're bringing it), visas, etc.

I am sure all of this is being taken care of on the side of his company, i just do not like the unknown and am not a huge fan of suprises.  He was told this would be a 3 year deal then he has the option to stay or go back to NY.  He is absolutely not the first expat, they are a large expat company on both sides of the ocean.

  • oh I love it there too.  We were married at Oceancliff- next door.   Good luck w/ everything.

Why wouldn't your education help on your resume?  I'm confused by that question.  Of course it will.  Like NCV said, you probably won't get a job equivalent to the one you have in NY, though.

Our lease contract on our house here is through H's company.  Does your FI's company have a relocation team?
