Re: Moving to London
Yes Relocation is through HR.
You guess? haha
Congrats to him!
Good luck finding a place to live. I doubt you'll have any problem!
Welcome to the board! We're in Scotland so can't help specifically with London but most of your specific questions should get sorted out with his HR department. We moved here on our own so we just had to figure everything out as we went along (and missed out on all the fun perks!) - I'm always super jealous of people with proper expat contracts. I assumed your contract was 10K a month inclusive but if it's just for rent you can literally live anywhere.
Almost everyone hired here seems to go through agencies so it would be worth your time to look up some options and start emailing now. It seems to take a while sometimes to get everything organised so it's worth getting started IMO. I have a few friends who are teachers here and the systems seem entirely different.
And you should definitely make sure you have someone at his work who will help with taxes, I find them entirely confusing and we're tax exempt in the states (since we don't make more than $80K each) but it sounds like your DH will have more paperwork.

I love love love Scotland and am looking forward to getting up to Edinburgh and Glasgow to visit family ( outside of Glasgow) I still have some friends from doing a summer and semister abroad at St Andrews. I am Scottish by nationality so it brings out my inner history dork. ( I was that girl in college that yelled freedom at Stirling castle or one of many)---- also excited to go to Bath again, I enjoyed that area also, but that was a while ago.
I could teach, in which I have advanced degrees in history and special education leadership, I also have a masters in social work which I have heard is always needed over there ( UK ) Shall see where I end up,
Thanks for the welcome. Isnt it late over there? Have a lovely night.
Hi and welcome! I am living in London with my American DH--came over a few years ago for my grad degree and have been here working since I finished that.
I second ILP's recommendation of Marylebone and would also suggest checking out Hampstead.
If you fancied a career change to educational publishing, I work for an educational publisher and I would think you'd be quite qualified for a number of positions. You could also look into helping write exam qualifications over here, if you like that sort of thing. GL with the move!
I love the word fancied
Educational publishing sounds amazing! As does exam writing. Thanks for the GL
I love Castle Hill Inn, I stayed there for two nights after our wedding, but we got married at Salve Regina. Oceancliff is gorgeous as well!
2012 Reading Challenge
Hello and welcome!
My jaw is still on the floor from $10,000 for housing! But then I just married and Englishman (who is an academic and a civil servant) so we're poor! ;-)
I also don't live in London, but live up north of Newcastle. If you figure something to do with advanced degrees in history, let me know!
We love living here!
If you are able to get a British passport, that will make literally everything easier. And that opens up a million options for you since you'd have EU citizenship. I'd look into this option as well.

You're also moving to Boston because you and your husband are both Academics?
First I thought you were kind of rude for coming on here with the whole "I'm so wealthy and naive, where should I live in London if I have this much money?", now I just think you're strange.
Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!
I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!

I kinda agree with this. Also, someone with such a great education (and who is teaching at a school!) shouldn't misspell semester and suburb so often.
And LOL at her MSW. Did you know that she also has M.Eds from Harvard (!!!), Columbia (!!!), and Montclair State?

And St. Andrews. You can't forget her overseas education.
Her fiance is an Olympic athlete? Perhaps that is why he is moving to London, to prepare for 2012.
