What a disturbing story, not only the abuse that was perpetrated on these children, but the adults who made no efforts to protect them.

Uh, yeah. He could definitely be saying a LOT more, rather than just leading "We are Penn State!" chants on his front lawn at all hours of the night.

Agreed. It has been reported that both the university vice president and the AD at the time were fully knowledgeable about the events. I cannot understand any opposition to removing them. This is a horrible black mark on the face of their university & they need to clean house, big time.
This has the grand jury report... warning it is horribly upsetting. It made me cry. I just don't understand how a human being could be so willfully blind to child abuse like this. (I obviously don't understand the abuser, never thought I could/would... but these other adults... I am just horrified at their inaction.)
Here is a quote from him outside his house with all those supporters of his.
"As you know, the kids that were the victims, I think we ought to say a prayer for them," he said.
Omg. Saying a prayer for them does not rectify the situation!
He did NOTHING when informed about it. Saying he told the school isn't enough. Anyone who is in that position has a moral (and legal) responsibility to contact the authorities. These were KIDS....young boys being assaulted on school grounds by a person they should have been able to trust.
End of story.

This situation makes me absolutely sick. The fact that anyone really believes his claim of ignorance is APPALING.

I think people need to think of it being THEIR sons in the posistion of the 10 year old boy. Then maybe their beloved coach wouldnt look so innocent anymore.

The fact that any of this was covered up, by this supposed "god" of football...all because no one wanted to tarnish the good name of Penn State, the football program, it's coaches and staff, and yes...Paterno...makes it all the more infuriating.
Football is a sport. Period. And it certainly shouldn't be priority over the saftey and well-being of a child.
Paterno, to me...is just as guilty as any of the others. Someone came to him reporting witnessing a boy being ANALLY RAPED in a shower by Sandusky. He reported it to campus police and that was it. Don't even get me started on that graduate assistant who did NOTHING to stop that b*stard from raping that poor boy. I don't care who it was, if I walked in and saw such an awful, unimaginable thing, I would have grabbed the boy and marched right to the f*cking police. I don't care WHO the rapist was, what school it was, what stupid f*cking football dynasty and legendary coaching staff there was to uphold.
I am fairly furious that people are feeling bad that Paterno is getting bad press for this. Um, that douchelord needs more than bad press.
And he needs to quit. Now. Not at the end of the season.
And yeah, I know there are many more other people involved with this mess at this school. But I have no problem pinning a lot of the bad press on Paterno.
Why?
Because he's the most recognized person at that school and he deserves it. He had the power to take this to the proper people, get that piece of sh!t out of there, protect those kids.
And he didn't.
And for that...he deserves much more than some bad f*cking press.

The situation at Penn State is absolutely shocking and disgusting. And the entire nation along with the national media is expressing massive outrage. Why, why, why doesn't this country express the same outrage and take the same stand against the Catholic church? Penn State is one coach. The Catholic church is hundreds of priests and thousands of victims coast to coast and world wide. If the Penn State coach who committed the crimes had been a Catholic priest, he wouldn't be going to jail, he'd have been simply transferred to coach at Notre Dame.

The only explanation I have for it...religion is harder for Americans to discuss and understand in comparison to football. People get uncomfortable discussing that of which they don't fully understand or want to learn about, so they sweep it under the rug.

Great question, and who the hell knows. Stuff happened at my high school that I am AMAZED was not all over (at minimum) local media.

I wonder if there is a similar Pennsylvania statute in place which requires anyone who has reasonable cause to believe there is abuse has to report it. It should not gone through these private chain of commands and should have been in place with the proper authorities every single time.
Perfect example of people not wanting to "get involved" and this went on for years. We only know about the examples we read... just imagine how many other victims are out there. This just shows how many times he was "caught". Scary.

I agree, Jamie. Why the disparity between the reaction to PSU and the priest sex abuse cases. It's disgusting. Yet another reason I can't support the Catholic Church...in any way.

The Bishop, totally. But, (as a super liberal catholic in the Lincoln Diocese) there are parishes that are very much not this way.
