QOTD Thursday (more food)

Yesterday's question was about good food, so today's is about not-so-good food.

What are three of your least favorite foods?

I'm talking about foods that you might encounter on a semi-regular basis and you avoid eating them, like fish or asparagus or blue cheese. Things like pig feet or grasshoppers don't count, unless they're regular staple in your family dinners for some reason.

Re: QOTD Thursday (more food)

  • Pineapple, olives, cream cheese.

As far as I'm concerned anything that's been touched by pineapple is ruined.

Same with olives, although I do like olive oil.

Cream cheese is nasty--the texture . . . blech. I do like cheesecake but only if it's chocolate.

  • My top two are actually herbs that I feel like for some reason, are in everything that I want to eat - cilantro and rosemary.  They are two things that I absolutely cannot stomach - though strangely I can devour the french fries with rosemary mayo at the Limerick in Wheaton.

There's really not a lot that I don't eat, and since I'm the cook in this place, I don't feel like I have to take a pass often.  I will say that often when I visit my parents, they tend to make things like lamb, salmon or something with beets that I have to push around on my plate, but I'll even try to take a little nibble of those - though my grandma really ruined me by forcefeeding us all lamb with mint jelly - so that is something that I can barely smell without wanting to barf.

  • Lamb, cilantro, mushrooms

Lamb tastes like sweat socks. Cilantro tastes like soap. Mushrooms taste like feet. I will politely eat all three, especially if they're part of a fancy restaurant tasting menu, but don't cook with them myself or go out of my way to order them.

  • Brussel sprouts

    Tuna fish from a can

Mushy cooked carrots - if they're crisp, like in a stir fry, I like them. But when they're cooked and mushy, blech.

  • Turnip/collard/beet/mustard greens (MIL adores them, I think they're disgusting), watermelon rind pickles, Brunswick stew.

Huh, all of mine are Southern foods that MIL makes.  I just can't stop being a Yankee.

ETA: Actually, I just remembered I also hate hard-boiled eggs.  The slippery, slimy egg white texture grosses me out so bad.  Egg salad=disgusting.  I might hate them more than greens.

Amen, my sister from another mister.  I hate mushrooms too!

  • Parmesan.  To me, it tastes like vomit.

Anchovies.  DH gets them on his half of the pizza, but the pieces next to his half still end up tasting like anchovies somehow.

Tofu.  People assume that as a vegetarian, I must subsist on tofu, but the texture weirds me out.

  • i am really picky and there are just some things that i don't like even though i've tried them in some of the best possible circumstances:

mayo - this might be my most hated thing, especially things like tuna or egg salad. there's little that triggers my gag reflex faster than tuna & mayo *barf*

eggplant - other than the eggplant ragu at acqua al 2 which is delicious, i hate it. i've had it made for me by my gay boyf's stepmom who is an amazing cook. still a no-go.

salmon and similar fish - i've tried several times over the years. i love a lot of shellfish and other fish but something about the texture just doesn't appeal to me.

  • Olives are gross.

    Beets are repulsive.

I'm not a huge fan of pork chops/tenderloin, although I love ham, bacon, sausage and most other pig products.

  • i hate olives and mushrooms too but if i can pick around them or order without, i am ok. and ditto mssaint & kiahj on beets.
cilantro tastes like soap to me too! ick!

  • I'm not a huge fan of beets either, but I've had some roasted beets that weren't bad. I won't seek them out though.

The other food that I will actively not eat is calamari that looks like little tentacles. It freaks me out. I will eat ring-shaped calamari, however.

  • There isn't much that I don't like, but here are two that come to mind:

--Most mint flavored things, especially mint chocolate chip ice cream. It all reminds me of my childhood dentist who used very minty tooth polish. The only mints I like are York Peppermint Patties.

--Hard boiled egg whites. I LOVE LOVE LOVE deviled eggs, but only the yolk part. I can't stand the whites.

  • Pesto, mushrooms and any gamey type meat.

Pesto is just vile. Although, i like all the ingredients, I just can't do them all mashed up together.

    Mushrooms taste like dirt.

Game is just so nasty (duck and lamb fit in the category).  One time I had to eat duck to be polite, so i cut it in miniscule pieces and loaded it underneath a bunch of other things (like mashed potatoes or broccoli) and ate it like that.  It was the most traumatizing experience ever.

  • I think mustard is repulsive.

Anything with lime in it will immediately make me dry heave (bad experience with tequila/lime/salt shots NINETEEN years ago) - yes, that means I hate margaritas:(  And that also means I am old!

I hate yogurt.  All kinds.  Slimy and yucky tasting.

I hate yogurt, too! A few years ago, I found some yogurt smoothies that I liked (and could kind of fool myself into thinking they tasted like slightly sour milkshakes), but they discontinued them :-(

  • olives

blueberries & blackberries (I am working on raspberries, but I still can't eat just the berries - I'm okay on sauces, and having raspberries as an ingredient)

cooked carrots (except, for some reason, in chicken noodle soup)

  • Swiss cheese, asparagus and ground beef. The smell of all three is disgusting.

  • 1. Any fish except canned tuna (I know - weird)

    2. Lemongrass - tastes like Lemon Pledge to me (ok, fine, I've not actually tasted Lemon Pledge but that's how I imagine it would taste).

    3. gourd squash - love it in ravioli or soup but not a fan of the roasted stuff. Not really a loathing - just don't like it.

  • imageMrsPhilDunphy:

    Cilantro tastes like soap.

I'm on this team.  And according to a NY Times article, "the great cilantro split probably reflects the primal importance of smell and taste to survival" which I interpret as MPD and I are programmed with heightened senses of smell/taste, and we will steer clear of dangerous herbs/plants.

Also, water chestnuts.  Ughhhhh, *shivers* gross.

  • Eggs.  I can cook with them, use them for breading, cookie dough, etc. I just can't stand the smell of them on their own.  And DH is notorious for over-cooking his eggs in the morning and then the whole house reeks.  Blech.  I also don't like broccoli because of the smell.

I also have an aversion to certain textures...things like cottage cheese and jello turn my stomach.

i forgot  about cottage cheese! another thing that i haven't had to eat since childhood but still gives me the shakes just thinking about the texture!

  • I thought of more.

Squash, water chestnuts, most fish (unless it's fried), zucchini, lima beans, blueberries (unless they're in a muffin)

  • My list can go on and on but here's some:

    Feta cheese

    Blue cheese

    Brussel sprouts

walnuts/pecans - due to an allergy.. bleh

    creamed corn

    spinach

    artichokes

  • Blue Cheese - or any other cheese with mold in it, no thank you.

Mustard - just never been a fan.  I can eat it if they forget to leave it off at McD's but that is about it, no honey mustard either.  If someone else is cooking and they use a small amount I am OK with it but if I am making a recipe I leave it out.

Yogurt - I never was served this as a kid so I had the joy of smelling bacterial/fungal/yeast cultures in college before trying yogurt so I couldn't get past the smell.  O can use it half and half in dips with sour cream or as an ingredient in sauces but I can;t take the smell straight up.  My kids love it too and I am always gagging while cleaning them up.

Olives - like olive oil but regular olives are something I avoid.

Egg nog - sorry it just sounds gross and I can't get past that to try it.

Anything spicy is a no go for me and I don't even like the smell of the buffalo chicken dip.

  • Eggs- I used to eat them with ketchup when I was a child. Now I cannot stand the taste of them.To be fair though, I've only tried scrambled eggs in recent years. Maybe I'd like an omlet, but I don't know that I can push myself to try one.

Brussel sprouts- Just gross smelling and tasting.

Most fish- I will eat tilapia now, but that's about it. I know I need to try more, but I can't stand the smell of some.

Ironically, a lot of the things most of you hate are some of my favorites: olives, cilantro, mushrooms, pesto... yum!

  • Bananas. I have an unfortunate ability to be able to determine if anyone within a mile radius is eating one too.

    JELL-O.

However, on a dare, I ate bananas in lemon JELL-O. My husband was the instigator. I almost died.

  • I guess I have a lot; I can't limit it to 3!

Meat: Lamb and veal. I just can't do it. Pork, mostly because I was raised kosher and never aquired a taste for it. I am happy to eat bacon, though. I can't eat non-fish seafood (shrimp, crabs, lobster, oysters, mussels) for the same kosher reason. I never got into it, and it doesn't appeal to me now.

    Brussel sprouts. Ew.

Strong cheeses. I like my mild, weak cheese. Wink

Also, I don't love fish, but sometimes I'll try some if I'm feeling adventurous and have been promised it won't taste "fishy." Strangely, I can eat tuna from a can until the cows come home.
