  • Welcome! I'm another newbie on the board, I'm not a buitenlander (currently)--I'm living with Guatemalan DH in the U.S.  Hopefully we'll be headed overseas in a few years though!  Enjoy the NL!

    I have much knowlegde about Dutch bureaucracy - I work for a local ombudsman so everyone who has a complaint about the local government can come to us :-);

I wasn't aware of your job title. It explains a lot of the work stress. We had to call the Swiss ombudsman over a health insurance coverage issue. I have a lot of respect for them. They definitely saved us from a pickle!

Glad they could help! And yeah, the job is stressful and demanding for all of those involved (ombudsman, investigators, secretaries and all of those in between. It's too important and actually fun to just give up and find something easier though.

That's great! Good for him. :)

What area of social history? My PhD is in social-cultural history (but really, it's nationalism and identity). Even taking into account higher foreign student fees in the UK, it worked out cheaper than doign my PhD where I originally started in the US. I would absolutely recommend it.

Thanks so much! Can I ask where you did your PhD? I'm interested in the same field! (Cultural heritage, nationalism + identity, migration studies ect).

Of course! I did it in the UK, at the University of Wales (hence my screen name!). I think I paid ?7K a year in fees, plus the COL, but that was nothing compared to my top-ten programme in the US, which was $40,000 for tuition and fees alone.

What regions are you interested in?

Sorry for my delayed response but I'm preparing dinner! I'm particularly interested in european social history, 18-19th century to be exact with a focus on either the UK or the Netherlands. I still have to narrow my focus but I have some time to think about it:) I hope you don't mind if I talk to you about this further sometime...I hope to be in your shoes one day!

Don't worry - I've only just logged back on after the kids' naps and all. Of course I'm happy to talk to you about it - I'm a sahm mom now, so miss that sort of discussion!

I'm a focus in 19th-20th C UK - which is probably very over done, but then I'm on a career break anyway. And who knows what I'll go back to once the kids are in full-time school.

Would you consider starting your PhD in the NL while you're there?

That's great...your advice will be much appreciated:) I just might do it here... U of A has a great program but the UK has great schools too. It will depend on many variables; finances, DH work, does the program jive with my interests ect. As you can tell, I'm itching to get back to school!!

  • Welcome! I'm an American living in Germany with my German DH.

I also want to repeat rita's message - right now there's some serious drama going on on the board. It's only the first or second time in the 6 months that I've been posting that drama has happened, so I hope you don't get the wrong impression. :-)

  • Hi and welcome! DH and I are Americans living in Edinburgh, Scotland. We both work at a university here and a ton of our friends are PhD students. It's amazing to see that kind of dedication. And it's amazing to me that PhD students are PAID here. He thought about getting his after his master's but it was so prohibitively expensive. It's amazing to see what people can accomplish here.

    Hi Ladies!

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. My name is Caroline and my husband and I moved to the The Netherlands earlier this year (Delft) and we are still adjusting, trying to meet new people and get settled. We really love living here; the quality of life is wonderful but it does come with it's trials and tribulations (don't get me started on the inane bureaucratic nonsense that goes on here!). We came in from Chicago but before that we lived and went to school in New Orleans. My DH is getting his PhD and I'm on the hunt for employment (I finally received my residence permit so I can work:) Anyway, I'm glad I found this site and I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you! Any other buitenlanders here???

Welcome!  I'm an American in Australia with my Australian hsuband.

But you said my magic words!  Where did you go to school in NOLA?  Before or Post-K?  I was born and rasied in NOLA, so I am always interested in what almost-locals think of it.  It's different being a local than being a tourist, you know?

I hope the transition to the Netherlnds has been relatively easy for you.  I'm glad to see you here.  :)

I don't mind being held to a higher standard; I mind being held to a lower one. (Sam Seaborn, The West Wing)
