    Thanks.

  • LOL!  I left for a bit.  I had to give people time to get popcorn.  LOL!  In all honesty, I don't even have the whole story and if I am completely honest he doesn't like to admit to it and would kill me if he knew it was out there.  He loves cars.  He was looking at cars (I think used) at a dealership.  Dealership was closed at the time so I am not quite sure why he didn't wait until it was open.  Police thought he looked suspicious.  His side of the story is he had a car stereo that someome had given him and he didn't realize it was stolen.  (I don't really believe that)  I am not sure what he was thinking.  Anyway, I just think he is a different person now.  Maybe a few months of jail time will do that to you if it doesn't make you a better criminal.

All of this happened in 1993.  He hasn't been in trouble again since.  I also think alcohol probably played a part in the original incident and he no longer drinks.  If his crime had had anything to do with a kid, I would not have dated him.  Some people still judge him not that I broadcast his past. (my immediate family knows)  I think a white-collare crime would have made for a better post.

Isn't that the defintion of 'ex-con'?

(could be wrong, never though that hard about it)

Wikipedia says "Ex-convict (or short: ex-con) is a common way of referring to a person who has been released from prison."

So...criminal past that didn't result in prison/jail might not fit the bill, but I'd still think 'excon',

  • So he went car shopping at a closed used car dealership and just brought along a stolen stereo? Yeah, that's pretty dumb. Not "I think I'll download child pornography on this library computer" dumb, but clearly he was up to some criminal mischief.

How long was he in jail?

  • So am I an ex con if I've been arrested but never sentenced to jail?

(And it was a pretty stupid alcohol offense when I was 22 for which I'm obviously not that proud of.)

    Huh?

I married him not understanding totally but thinking it had to do with stealing a car.  Now I realize it is a car stereo.  He doesn't admit to his part of it which does bother me.  Like I said, he has not been in trouble since and doesn't drink anymore etc.  I didn't really want to post this but I thought it might get through to her.  He paid restitution and spent 3 months in jail.  (I now know the difference between jail and prison)

My point is, plenty of people would say I overlooked too much.  I don't think so. I would not have been able to overlook a violent crime and/or a crime against kids.  I don't know wtf is with the italics in this post.  Oh, under people who know, my therapist knows.

Uh huh.  Julie, there's a woman named AirIsRunningOut on SO.  I want to see the two of you discuss your menfolk together.

  • I remember Airsrunningout having a crazy story but I come up empty on details.  Do you care to share?  Like I said, I know people think I overlooked too much.  I can overlook things- not child porn.

Gotta ask, do YOU think you overlooked to much--not from your own perspective, from an outsider perspective?

As in, if your BFF/mom/daughter came to you and told you the details you share here (you knew he spent time in prison.  You didn't actually look at what for.  He doesn't take responsibility for it.  etc), would you tell her to run away?

Ex con comes from convict. So unless you were convicted, you aren't an ex con. YWIA!

  • He went to jail for stealing a car radio...and it was his first offense??

    ummmm no.

  • Honestly, I probably wouldn't care if my SO had been convicted for a non-violent offense back when I was still learning my times tables, particularly if that offense didn't warrant prison time.

  • My dad was arrested a few times in college.  Public nudity.  Or, as he explains it, "it was the 1960s...who wasn't streaking?"  I think what embarrasses him is that he got caught - he was on the track team and couldn't outrun the popo.
    This is my siggy.
