office holiday parties

Re: office holiday parties

  • My office has a mid-week, mid-day event in December.

His office has an event in March - so as to not favor any one religion over another and/or conflict with anyone's holiday travel.

  • My old job had a party during the workday (3-6ish) but because my office had public phone queues we could only go for a half hour each. :P There was light food, beer/wine, and raffle prizes (which you had to be present to win, needless to say I never got one!)  Once upon a time it did extend into after-hours and there was dancing, music and SO's could come but that was about a decade ago now.

DH's boss throws a holiday party for his staff at his MANSION in DC. There are well over 100 guests when you add in spouses, full bar, food, valet parking, receiving line to say hello to him and his wife, It's seriously the craziest thing I've ever seen. I went last year for the first time (about ready to pop) and can't wait to go this year now that I can take advantage of the booze. :)

  • These stories are all crazy to me.  It's like a weird parallel universe I know I will never be a part of being a teacher and DH being a geeky scientist with all intentions to stay in the public sphere.

  • DH and I are both at new jobs, so I don't really know what our parties will be like this year. I know mine is during the workday, and we do some sort of outing (we only have 5 full time people and 1 part time person).

DH thinks that his is just a pot luck or something during the workday.

When we were in DC, my job had a nice dinner out, just staff. DH's had an evening cocktail party at a restaurant.

Our best parties were when we lived in Oklahoma. My first job there had a huge, over the top party - tons of food, open bar, DJ & dancing, door prizes, a photographer - to which spouses were invited. My other job had a nice dinner, sometimes at a client's restaurant, to which spouses were invited but it wasn't as over the top as at my first job (it was also a much smaller company). DH's company had big parties at a hotel. I kind of miss those, because it was an excuse to dress up!

  • Dear LJW,

My employers are a toddler tyrant and an infant. It's a party with liquid, but you don't need a taxi afterwards.

    Shirking work,

  • We have a very formal one in the evening (this year on a Wednesday) with our clients, buffet stations, and open bar. SO's are not invited.

Right around Christmas we do a lunch, with all employees, during the day that the company pays for. SO's are not invited to this either.

My husband's company will occassionally (has happened 3 times in 6 years) take everyone and their SO's out to a nice dinner.

  • our group usually does a pot luck and white elephant gift exchange (during a long meeting), which is optional, but the company does a part catered workday party near Christmas.  Then they have a fancy dinner/dance in January on a Fri/Sat night where SOs are invited (not kids).  We have a summer picnic where there is a lot of stuff for kids to do.

I would probably be offended about paying to go to that party!
