Helping a military mama in need

Came across this charity opportunity on a blog I was reading... http://www.tothemotherhood.com/2011/11/baby-registry-giveback-helping-mothers.html One of the finalist is a military wife and if you're looking for a way to give back, I think contributing to her registry is a great way to do it! I love how personal it is and that I can choose and see exactly where my money goes.

Re: Helping a military mama in need

  • What supplies does she need that will cost thousands of dollars?

Her health care was covered so I'm not sure what expenses she has incurred that she can't buy a car seat, crib, bottles, diapers and wipes. Oh, an clothes.

  • 354 items sure does seem like a lot for ONE baby when you're talking about NEEDS and not WANTS.

  • Also, an $850 DSLR camera should not be on your registry IMO. And why does she need a double stroller for a single child?

    Yeah.

I can justify a fridge...she stores food and breast milk/formula for the baby in it but not an almost $900 camera!

Yeah, I still can't justify the fridge on a baby registry. It's the same way you'd get a side-eye from someone if you put a fridge on your wedding registry because now you're feeding double the people so you'll need more room.

ETA: If they didn't have a fridge AT ALL, I might be more understanding, but I just can't wrap my head around this. You can't possibly tell me that every family that has a baby/toddler has multiple fridges in their house.

And this may be flameful, but I don't really see military families as families in need.  There is a steady paycheck, BAH, and pretty good health insurance.  I would much rather give to the family who lost everything in a flood because they're, you know, actually in need.

  • *trots over from FB*

No one ever bought me a camera, double stroller, and mini fridge  Where do I get in line?

I agree. Not saying military members are rich (lol) but there are plenty of benefits we get that civilians dont often get.

and if they are living somewhere without a fridge... well... they dont have to be living there. They could try to move on base, or move somewhere else. I highly doubt that they are living somewhere without a fridge.

This just seems so entitled to me.

No flames from me.  It always bothers me when I hear and read stories about military families on government assistance.  The military provides a steady paycheck with health benefits...it's your responsibility to live within your means.

are we supposed to be looking to give back to ... military wives? ... lol. or the military community? to expectant motheres? or just looking to give back in general?

If I wanted to give money to a stranger, I'd rather just give someone diapers or formula or some kind of necessity (and yes, I know formula is not always a necessity, but for some people it is)

  • Wait! Since I have 2 kids on a military paycheck does that mean I get 2 fridges?

Being serious, having kids in a military family is actually a great deal. They have great health insurance, I have always been able to buy my kids good healthy food, they have always had clothes on their backs  and a roof over their heads. I may have had to *gasp* buy a few things second hand from time to time.

Eh, this didn't bother me too much.  Most people pick a charity that they can relate to.  Aside from the registry items...I don't like the fact that charity is being given to the winner of some contest.  Seriously...if these women need charity and from the sound of some of their stories they do, just split up the money you have and give them all the basics (formula or a breast pump, bottles, diapers, clothing).  The contest is self-serving to the host as it boosts their site traffic which makes them more attractive to advertisers.

I was shocked, and a little offended, when 4 out of 5 wives in C's shop told me I needed/should get on WIC while I was pregnant, so that the state would help me buy our groceries. Indifferent If we couldn't afford groceries we wouldn't be having kids.

I was even more peeved when C thought it was a good idea. I told him we would leave that money for people who actually need it.

Amen!  I feel confident saying that the majority of families in my base housing neighborhood are on WIC.  Drives me insane.

OMG I just had an "AH HA moment", all those times they used to cry when they were babies and I thought it was just gas CLEARLY it was their anguish over lack of designer wear.  Thank you Sookie.

Wasn't there a chick on MF about 6 months ago asking how she could go about applying for WIC even though she really didn't need it, she just wanted to use it because she thought she would qualify or she was pissed because they denied her.  Some crazy sh*t like that.

  • Also, her list is about triple the size of the other moms in need and her story is not that serious. How many moms brave the birth (and, for some, entire lives) of their children alone every day!? Give me a break.
Mrs. Delgado's story is so sad.
It looks like military drama mama doesn't have too much support...her registry remains virtually unfulfilled.

  • That lady registered for 23 pairs of baby shoes. What is the point of a convertible crib and a toddler bed? The $140 blanket and BOB stroller are super nice, but IMO, it's silly to register for that when you say you can't even afford the basics. I'm curious how much she paid OOP for her delivery complications.
