Do you think it is selfish to have one kid?
Re: Do you think it is selfish to have one kid?
I don't think it's selfish. I think how many kids you have is a personal decision & have known many only children who are completely "functional". It's not like they don't go to school, have cousins, etc.
As an infertile, I would be thrilled with 1 child. And unless we get lucky with twins we will likely only have 1 child because we can't afford financially or emotionally to keep doing IF tx.
selfish??? no - I think there's a lot of good reasons to only have 1 kid - and with school they will get plenty of interaction with other kids
we want 2 - only 2 - I think it's nice to have someone to play with, like you said
but I certainly don't consider people with 1 kid to be selfish!!
Nope. I don't really feel like it is my place to judge other people for how many children they decide to have.
DH and I want 2, assuming that is possible for us. I am the oldest of 4 and I love it, my childhood was a lot of fun (and a decent amount of chaos). But I have no interest in being the parent of 4 children, and there is no guarantee that siblings will get along.
The sibling relationship is unique, but so are a lot of relationships. We don't have to try them all.

Not at all. I have one sister and we're not that close at the moment - and my FI is not close at all to any of his 3 brothers or 1 sister.

I like this a lot

We are one and done. I am 40 years old. We had to do IVF to get pregnant with our LO. I never felt well while pregnant--so much so that I spent about 75% of my time in bed. I ended up really sick at delivery--I developed preeclampsia and HELLP Syndrome. Then, postpartum depression hit me like a ton of bricks. My son is a true blessing, but I can not put myself nor my family through any of that again--especially since we now have one child. IMO, it would be selfish to get pregnant again. (FWIW, my OB was relieved to learn that we did not plan to have any more children.) This is my story, this is why one child is better for us.
I do have to say that the "I want my child to have a sibling" argument doesn't hold much water, in my opinion. I have an older brother. There aren't problems in our relationship, but we are very distant. And, my DH is an only child and he was the one who brought up having just one child.
Having a child is selfish in the same sense that not having a child is selfish. What difference does it make if you have one child or three? DH is an only child, and he loved it. I have an older brother that is as different from me as night and day, and we've never been close.
I don't know how these two things are related; apples to oranges.
