So, we were up at my sisters this past Friday/Saturday, DH started browsing through her baby name book. Anyway he came across several variations for his name: John. Since we won't use his name, seeing that he already has the III behind it and there is another John with the same last name that isn't close family but lives in the area it's already confusing enough.
So the name that DH found that he apparently likes is Zane. I on the other hand am not to crazy about it, but I was just curious what SN think. Honest opinions are welcome!

Re: Honest Opinion on a Name
The first thing I thought of when I read "Zane" was the actor Billy Zane from Titanic:
I think Zane is a modern-style name for a boy. A lot of last names make good first names; Allen, Glenn, Garrett, Mallory, Hillary... and a lot of others. As long as your last name isn't Zane, I think it's a nice name to have on the baby name list.

Would you pronounce it Zan or Zay-nuh?
I knew a guy in college who spelled his name Zane, but pronounced it Zan.

Not sure if you care about uniqueness/trendiness, but looking at the Name Voyager, names with an X, Q, or Z are definitely getting more popular. Zane is all the way up to 235.
I'm sort of meh on Zane but I like some of the other Q/X/Z names.

I've never heard anyone pronounce it either Zan (rhymes with "man") or Zay-nuh (two syllables)... I've always heard it as Zayn (rhymes with "main"), and I've known a few guys with the name.
Tbh, I don't much like either Zan-rhymes-with-man or Zay-nuh; they both just sound really bizarre to me.
Zayn-rhymes-with-main (while still spelling it normally, i.e. 'Zane') is a perfectly fine name, though.
For 'John' alternates, though, I have to say I do prefer Ian.
Zay-nuh was supposed to be Zayn (rhymes with "main"), but I couldn't really figure out how to do it. Your way works well.
This is how we would pronounce it.

I'll have to mention that to DH!! I actually like that better than Zane.
We had a name all picked out for a boy but now DH is leaning towards doing a variation for John. So I guess we aren't done with names yet lol
We would still want to use Grant though, because we picked that name so we could name baby (if it's a boy) after my dad as well.

I think I fall in this category, but it's not terrible obviously so I think it's an ok choice

Ian Grant is actually really nice, I think -- a bit British Isles ("Ian" being Scots and "Grant" being both Scots and English), but that's not a bad thing in the least.
Good luck figuring out the perfect name! It's hard work.
We're still working on it ourselves, haha. I'll be happy if we can chop our current list down by 80% before Christmas...
I just had a really random thought.
Our wedding photographer had a kid and his name was Alexander, but they called him Zan (rhymes with man) and Zander for short.
Maybe this name is starting to become popular? I don't know if that's important to you, but if it is, I'd take a look to see how it's trending for all spellings (if there is another spelling for it)
It's above average in my book. It wouldn't work for me, but i wouldn't question someone else's use of it for their child. I don't know that i like Zane Grant, though -- too many hard sounds. Ian Grant works better for me. Both first names work with your last name (if i am remembering it correctly).

A lot of it probably depends on if you are looking at more traditional names or something different.

I think 'Xander' is the more common spelling.

I'm just kinda "meh" about Zane...but it makes me think of this scene, and I love Billy Zane in this scene.

I like Ian.
Yeah, when I hear Zane, I think "Billy Zane!" Not that I don't like the name per se, but I think it's a name that can go either way. Either it'll be the "cool" name, or one that will be made fun of easily. How does it sound with your last name?
Honestly, if you're not in LOVE with the name, I would put it on the "maybe" list and come back to it later. Once you find the name, you'll know.

LOL. Well, you have a perfectly good excuse.
Whereas I've been obsessing over names lately; I want to cut our current long list by 80% in the next two weeks, LOL.
we can help.
List is currently at 253 unique first name/middle name combinations.
This is significantly down from the just-over-2000 it was to start with, and the thousand-ish it was a month ago.
We'll get there; it's just taking work.
Once we get it down to a slightly more reasonable size for sharing, I'll start asking for opinions.

holy moly..
I kinda like Zane. As a teacher, I've only had one Zane in my classes (that I remember!), and he was a good kid.
Zane is also the name of the cute "bad boy" character on SyFy's "Eureka."
