speaking of vaccines

I'm starting a new thread because I don't want to hijack the other post.

I totally lost a friend over this.  She chose not to vaccinate her daughter who is 2 years older than Tommy.  I respect that was her decision but I don't agree with it.  I told her that I really didn't feel comfortable with her daughter being around Tommy because he is not fully vaccinated yet so there are things her daughter could get and pass to him because he is too young to get the vaccine.  She flipped on me and told me I was crazy.  She doesn't talk to me anymore.  I realize my kid will probably be in contact with others who have not been vaccinated but I just didn't feel comfortable knowing that her daughter was not vaccinated for anything.

Re: speaking of vaccines

  • I don't blame you at all. I went crazycakes and demanded that all our family who would be in contact with the baby get the DTaP vaccine. No vaccine, no baby time.

  • I'm also curious, since not vaccinating seems to be a trend these days, don't kids HAVE to be vaccinated to go to school?  I remember having to get booster shots before 1st grade.  Are schools allowing kids not to be vaccinated now?

  • In the article that LD posted, it says that from state to state, laws for this are different. In many cases people can opt out by claiming that they don't want to do it for religious or other personal reasons and it is OK.

School is a gross and scary place. I DREAD the yearly letter that gets sent home that says, "We wanted to take this time to inform you that there has been a head lice outbreak in your child's classroom yesterday..."

  • Is the chickenpox vaccine required now?  I heard about it recently because I guess you have to get boosters for the rest of your life.  Wouldn't be better to let the kid get the pox and be done with it?  Or has the pox gotten worse/more agressive since we were kids?

I don't know but I got chicken pox AND shingles when I was a kid and I had already been vaccinated for pox.  It was horrible.  Horrible.

  • Yes, chicken pox is now required. The booster is required before entering into 4th grade (I know this bc the school nurse sent a paper home last year about it). I never had chicken pox growing up so I don't know if it's horrible or not (it sounds like it is). I don't think I've heard of anyone having it recently.

  • Shan - I had pox when I was a kid but besides the itchiness, it wasn't that bad.  I did have a bad case of the shingles when I was in college though.  That sucked.

I just remember going over to a friend's house who had the pox to play with her because I had already had them.

  • Honestly, I only really remember the shingles.  I got the chicken pox young.  I had a bad case of shingles when I was 10 that hung around for like 2 months.  I was covered from my neck down my chest, back, arms and stomach.  They were so ungodly painful.

  • Have you all heard of Pox Parties?  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pox_party

    Odd.

I am scared of shingles.  I don't remember much about having chicken pox except that I still have scars from picking at them.

  • I have heard of pox parties but I wouldn't send my kid to one.

Shingles are a biatch.  They hurt and itch and ooze and are gross.    And you have to take giant Valtrex pills and I know it's stupid and immature but I wanted to say 'hey, I am shingles, not herpes' when I picked it up at the pharmacy.

    I have no words.

Some American parents have attempted to collect infected material, such as saliva, licked lollipops, or other infected items from people who claim to have children infected with chickenpox.[4] The parents use social networking services to make contact with these strangers. The unknown person then mails the potentially infectious matter to the requester, who gives it or feeds it to his or her child in the hope that the child will become ill.[4]

Experts say it is unlikely that these methods will transmit the chickenpox virus effectively or reliably, because the varicella virus cannot survive for very long on the surface of such items. However, it may be a reliable method of transmitting other diseases, including hepatitis B,group A streptococcal infection, and staphylococcal infections?potentially deadly diseases that the parents never intended to expose their children to.[4] Additionally, deliberately sending infectious matter through the U.S. Postal Service is illegal.[4]

  • From what I remember the doc telling me, chicken pox has gotten so bad that kids were dying from it. I haven't heard many cases though (I guess people were getting vaccinated). Now, when you get vaccinated, you can still get chicken pox (multiple times too apparently - I am not sure about this though) but you don't get it that bad.
  • Mostly a lurker, but I got the pox 3 times when I was younger. The first time was the absolute worst. We were on vacation in Florida and the day after we visited the Mouse my brother and I both woke up with them. Long sleeves and long pants in Florida to ride that stupid train home was a horrible experience. My mother is a saint because I know I was a nightmare the whole 24 hour ride home.

The second time wasnt too bad, but I gave them to my high school senior cousin the week before prom. She was pretty pissed at me for it. The third time we thought they were just excesive big bites since it was summer time. Nope, the kid next door got them too. We took turns staying at each others houses until they went away.

I keep hearing that the pox strain around these days is really bad because for so many years they traveled alone. Now it seems like they are teaming up with some other really funky stuff.

Ugh - I used to work at a pedi's office in college and we had a patient who had never seen a medical doctor before.  He was 5 and it was his first visit.  The parents had him going to a holistic chiropractor.  So, naturally he had not been vaccinated AT ALL and it was time for kindergarten.  That poor kid had to come in almost every week of the summer to get a different shot so that he would have all the required shots for school.  I felt so bad for him.

Stepping on my green soapbox for a moment:

That's why people need to calm down with all of the antibacterial stuff.  It's starting to create superbugs that are resistant to drugs.  Good old soap and water works just fine.

    Sing it, sister.

  • I had chickenpox as a kid-it wasn't too bad. I grew up in a small town and had under 15 kids in my class so when the first kid got it, his mother held a "party" for the other kids in our class. Many parents decided to get it over with and have us all out of school at the time. Plus, it's better to get it when you're young, it is dangerous to get as an adult. Then, about a year ago, I had shingles but apparently the case was really mild. Only a small rash on my arm and a bit of pain. The doctor told me it was likely I would have it again.

My sister is hesitant about vaccines. My niece will be getting them all but it will take closer to 5 years what she would have gotten in 3 years. My sister will only introduce one new vaccine at a time and all new vaccine are given in the right arm. That way, if there is a reaction, she knows which vaccine caused it. She also has researched the different brands of vaccines and sometimes has a preference of one over another. I think it's fine to be educated on the topic and have a say in what your child is given and how it is given but, of course, there are always those that take it to a total extreme.

My SIL was as crazycakes as you on this, she didn't make us get vaccinated, if she could she probably would have though.  But if we were having a family function and if any was sick or just getting over something, she would stay home with the baby.  She wasn't so crazy with niece #3 since niece #1 & 2 are in school now and bring home every germ they can find.

Agreed!  When people want to hold V, I make them wash their hands, not use hand sanitizer.

  • I'm probably not going to do the pox vaccine. I had it as a kid and it was miserable, so why not vaccinate you ask. It was so miserable because it was August and we had no A/C then my brother got it and my mom refused to use any anti itch stuff and we only got an oatmeal bath once a day. I don't know why, but I'm sure she had a good reason. So has long as I'm able I would like to expose him, but with friends not strangers. And FWIW my nurse practioner said that this was a good idea.

Not judging and not being snarky but I cannot imagine wanting to expose my child to childhood diseases and viruses on purpose. Especially when some of those can be life threatening.

  • I'm gonna be honest. I thought the chicken pox vaccine was dumb. I had the mildest case of it when I was a kid.

But then I learned that chicken pox can be severe or even deadly in some kids and it became a no brainer to make sure Little L got the shot.

I was up too freakin early this morning to blow my daily gasket over non-vaxxer's.

My hesitation with this vaccine is it's lack of testing through time, It hasn't been around an entire generation yet which gives me pause. I talked with my doctor about it (he's not the reason I want to switch practices, he's the reason I have stayed as long as I have) and the immunity is stronger, he also stated that MOST children that are well taken care of will not perish, it's ones that have weakened immune systems or have another underlying factor. Same thing with measles. I polled a bunch of doctors I know, some I'm related to and asked them if they had ever seen a case of measles. My aunt who runs the medical unit at a large jail said she had seen one case in almost 30 years and thousands of patients. So we probably won't do that one either.

I don't judge anyone who does or does not vaccinate. But I can understand the concerns both parties bring up.

  • FFS, please, please tell me you are joking.

Informal polling does not research make.  There are decades of substantiated peer reviewed medical research that refute your joke of a poll.

I judge.  I judge the shiit out of people who make decisions like this. It's one thing if your child is immune compromised or legitimately allergic to vaccines. But it's another to put your kid and others at risk Bc your jailhouse working aunt hasn't seen the measles.

You know why people haven't seen measles? Because people got effing vaccines against it! If I were your pedi I'd kick your asss out of my practice bc your ignorance is putting other patients at risk.

Yeah! I haven't been flamed or called an ignorant in a LONG time.

To address some of your points.....

Our decisions are not based solely on "informal polling". I didn't send out a scantron to my uncles, aunts, and cousins all of whom are in various fields of medicine. Nope instead I gathered information through old fashioned tactics, the internet.  Once we had gathered the info we then went and had serious discussions with people most importantly our personal physician. Who actually disagreed with us and said we were vaccinating against too much and suggested we not to two vaccines that we had chosen, we did them anyway.

I currently have the luxury, and yes I know it's that, of staying home with my son full-time, if he were in daycare, I am sure our decisions would be different.

So judge away. Judge away with your narrow minded self. And continue doing whatever vaccine schedule you are doing and I seriously hope and pray that your beautiful little girl (seriously she's stunning) never has a side effect that you are unable to pin point because of everything else that is put into the vaccine.

I have to go and put on my birkenstocks and turn my compost pile.

  • I can.not.even with this thread.

We were at a point this year where we were worried our son would be one of those kids with a compromised immune system who may not be able to receive his shots in a timely manner.  He would have been entirely dependent on the herd immunity for a period of time.

And I would have needed to worry about people who polled their aunt's cousin's ex boyfriend and decided to skip the MMR vax infecting him on the playground.

That's great you stay home.  Does Brooks also reside in a bubble?  Because if not, and you have him out and about, he is a potential danger to any poor kid with an actual medical reason outside of "parent who fancies herself better than a doctor" not to be vaxed.

I do thank you for being open and honest.  I would prefer selfish no vaxers who depend on my kid to protect theirs from polio all out themselves so I know what GTGs to avoid.

Ah thank God you used the ever accurate Internet for your 'research'.

It's good you get to stay home, I'm sure that helps. But it's not like you guys never leave the house, no? Does his dad wah, too so he doesn't  come into contact with sick people? Do you keep other family away from him? Keeping him home from daycare limits his exposure, but unless he lives in a bubble that's not going to protect him from some really bad but totally preventable illnesses.

I will continue to follow the vaccine schedule that thankfully the majority of people do and I'll listen to those who are actually epidemiologists and physicians trained in the field.  And hopefully  she will be surrounded by those whose parents made the same decisions me and her dad did.

And really, birkenstocks and compost? Please. I'm not calling you a hippie. I'm saying your're making unsound medical decisions not based on legitimate research.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I was OBVIOUSLY joking about using the internet as my sole research tool, trying to show a little sarcasm.

And you should definitely follow everything the government recommends because they never make mistakes.
