This afternoon I heard on the radio a discussion of this past Black Friday/Cyber Monday being the biggest/spendiest ever. They posed an interesting question: Do you think the economy has truly rebounded or do you think people are just spending beyond their means?

    Three words:  Credit Card Debt

  • imageTiffany618:

Angie - Yes!  There are many places where I won't buy anything unless it is 50% off plus I have some sort of coupon.   The retail price of everything seems to have skyrocketed, and I have to get a significant discount just to pay a reasonable price for things these days.

I'm also really agitated with some of my favorite stores from the past...NY&Co., The Limited, Express, etc.   The price of their stuff is at least twice what it should be, and they give ridiculous coupons.   Why not just have the stuff priced normally, and pass out 10 or 20% off coupons to get shoppers in the door?   I just roll my eyes every time I get a take $70 off of $140 coupon, or something to that effect.

    /end rant

ITA, not to mention the fact that the quality of the fabric at NY&Co and The Limited has gone down significantly.  I used to buy all my work shirts at Limited and now I can hardly stand to touch most of them.  They just feel cheap to me.  And the last couple of shirts I've bought there have gotten damaged way early.  I'll pay a high price for good quality, but I won't even use a coupon on something that's terribly made.  If they ever change the quality of their sweaters I think I'll die.

YES! I used to get all my work clothes at NY&Co, but the last two pencil skirts I've had from there have started unraveling at the seams after one wear... and it's not like I'm sausage'ing into them or anything. Super bummed.

  • I am huge on only buying things when they are on sale.  I hardly ever buy anything without a coupon anymore.  I also buy an entire years worth of stuff on black friday just to save instead of buying it at higher prices throughout the year. The only thing I dont use coupons on is grocery shopping, which I tried and just couldnt do it.

  • All of my shirts from NY&Co seem to shrink considerably after washing, even when following all washing instructions to a T. Same with Old Navy.

I used to buy a lot of clothes from there, too, for work.  Now they all fit weird and the few shirts that I have purchased have been very poorly made.  I wore a shirt twice, before it was beyond repair and I washed it exactly the way the tag said to.

    Mine too!

I'm kind of at a standstill on apparel.  My clothes, especially for work, are horrible and ragged...but I don't want to go back to my old go-to's really.

Also, has anyone else had issues with jeans lately?   I buy jeans that fit, nicely, and then wear them for an hour or two and they are two sizes too big.

Jeans always stretch, I get that...but I should not be able to nearly pull them off without even unbuttoning them after a few hours.

    Frustrating.

1, I'd take em back if it was after one wear!  2, I love that you made a verb out of sausage.

I feel the same about Express, both about the prices and the quality.

I think we had this discussion before. I used to LOVE NY&Co even had the platnium card cause I shopped their so much. I had the same issue that Tiffany said with those stupid discounts. I would just wait and use one of them because everything went on sale at some point. I even bought my suit at JC Penny for $70 during their sale right now. I can't bring myself to buy clothes at full price anymore. I wish I could sew and be one of those awesome people who make their clothes.

  • Tiffany - I have the same problem with jeans.  I thought I'd finally found some I love, but I think they're shrinking, because now they look too short.  I wash and dry them every wearing, because otherwise they get too loose, but they were $100 pants that I just bought this spring, so I didn't expect them to shrink so soon :(

Ugh, yes.  I used to have a ton of NY&Co pants, and they've changed those so I don't like them anymore.

I know they're super over-priced, but I've taken to wearing Gap jeans, even though they stretch out pretty quickly.  For one, I can wear them in a size smaller than what I'm used to.  For two, I really love the shape of the Long and Lean.  I never pay full price, I always wait until there's a sale and then snatch them up.  Jeans are the only Gap product I'll buy, though.

@Leslie: I used to love Old Navy, but all my cute shirts are super stretched.

Yes, I got some Gap long and lean jeans a few weeks ago that stretched out big time.  The worst I have ever seen. :(   I may try again with a smaller size.

Long and Lean was my favorite all throughout college.   They never stretched at all back then.  Sad.

    *sigh*

Yeah, the comments section on the website is full of people begging them to bring back the old fabric.  You should definitely try a size smaller -- they stretch out a lot less.  I was doing my normal size in petite, but now I'm a size down in the regular inseam and I just get them tailored.  Much better fit.

  • I hate it when you show up for a scheduled meeting and because the person before you ran late, your appointment gets pushed back. I have a meeting with my tutor at 5:15, so pushing my 4:30 paper meeting to 5 is a little inconvenient for me. Thanks!

  • My issue is with food.  Like Slimfast--now instead of 6 cans you get 4 bottles for the same price.  Same with my Crystal Light tea--all of the sudden now it's tiny little packages and it takes TWO of them to make a pitcher of tea instead of one but it's the same price.  I could go on and on--it angers me to no end!

Now that I am older, I have found I have to spend a little more on things like jeans anyway--they just look and feel better and last longer.  And I still like places like Old Navy and the Gap--but I wash everything in cold and let it all air dry.  My Old Navy sweaters and stuff always get holes in them though.

Luckily I can wear sweats to work.  ;)

I tried that too.  I bought a very expensive pair of jeans last week and they stretched out horribly.  I was SO disappointed and had to take them back.

I guess this will be a brand discovery journey.

  • It's just a trend lately--what can we skimp on or cheapen and still charge the same price for?  I swear our cat food has less and less in it every time I open a can.  When we went to the car show at the fair, I was appalled at the quality of the new cars I saw--everything on the inside was plastic.  We went to our favorite Thai place last weekend and the prices had gone up slightly and the portions were smaller.  It's so aggravating.

The only "cheap" jeans I ever buy are from Old Navy and I've always had good luck with them.   But their sizes run really big so I have learned to buy a size smaller even if they are a little snug when I first try them on.

  • I noticed a lot of you talking about Limited, Express and NY&Co.  I used to work for Lane Bryant back when they were all owned by the same company.  Even though LB isn't owned by them any more, I do see the quality of clothing going down hill at just about any place I'm willing to shop.  ON tees get holes so easily, LB underwear tear side seems (and I'm not sausaging myself into them either), my JC Penney's cute knit sweater got a hole in after a month, etc.  It's so frustrating.  I don't like clothes at most other places (plus they are so much more expensive).  At least it's been the tops though, not the bottoms.  It is really frustrating.

    Leslie,

    Good luck with your presentation!

  • I bought a pair of expensive Lucky jeans last year and they got worn out so fast. I was so disappointed. I've had good luck with the Gap's curvy jeans this year. They don't seem to stretch out as much, and with my others I'm always having to pull them up. I want to think it's because they're made a little slimmer in the waist than the hips so they stay on better? People were complaining that the quality of the material has gone done, but I have nothing to compare it to. I love the pair I have and just bought a few more pairs in different fits.
